LIVERPOOL FC V CSKA MOSKVA
STADE LOUIS II, MONACO FRIDAY 26 AUGUST 2005 at 20.45 UEFA SUPER CUP LIVERPOOL FC v CSKA MOSKVA Welcome to the eighth UEFA Super Cup to be played in Monaco since the event was switched to a single match at a neutral venue in 1998. Like the first, the eighth involves an English team and Liverpool FC are the only one to have visited Monaco twice – the first time being in 2001, when, as UEFA Cup winners, they took on the champions of Europe, FC Bayern München, and beat them 3-2 thanks to goals by John Arne Riise, Emile Heskey and Michael Owen. Their opponents this time, however, are making history as debutants. PFC CSKA Moskva, to give them their full name, are the first Russian club ever to compete for the UEFA Super Cup and will be more than keen to wave the flag in style against the winners of the dramatic UEFA Champions League final in Istanbul. The UEFA Super Cup is expected to be watched by a capacity crowd of 18,000, with some 5,000 CSKA Moskva fans making the trip from Russia to give their team historic levels of support on an historic occasion. Although the two teams have jointly played almost 300 matches in UEFA club competitions (Liverpool FC almost five times as many as their Russian rivals) this is the first time they have met. Curiously, this was also the case when Liverpool met AC Milan in Istanbul and when CSKA Moskva took on Sporting Clube in Lisbon. This is the first time that the UEFA Super Cup has been disputed by two teams who scored three in their respective finals. -

Editor Notes Alex Everson And so the season rolls on, as we move past the last International break of 2019, Reading now face a gruelling stretch of 10 games in the next 40 days up to and including Fulham away. The last month has provided some respite for us Royals fans as we have seen an uptick in fortunes under the start of the Bowen tenure, as Jordan looks at in his review. ReadingDeep returns to examine how Bowen is differing his tactical approach to that of his predecessor. Alongside those, we also have a throwback to the glory days of both the Simod Cup as Dave Stevens touches on the glory at Wembley, with a reminder that sometimes managers with no experience, no wins and sitting in a relegation zone sometimes turn out ok from Matthew Williamson who ventures back to the McDermott hiring. We also have a piece on the importance football plays in many fans lives, and how it can provide both comfort, and escapism for many. This is one of the more poignant pieces we've received to date and is a must read. If you want to get involved with writing in the next issue of The Digestive, please don't hesitate to contact me on Twitter @Readingfanman, or fill in the form on our website www.elmparkroyals.com We will speak again at Christmas time, but until then, get behind the team, and fingers crossed that the current unbeaten run perhaps is the start of the upswing we've all been waiting for. Alex Everson Thanks to our contributors in this issue Anon. -

LIVERPOOL FC V CHELSEA FC
Semi-final Liverpool 03 May 2005 LIVERPOOL FC - CHELSEA FC ANFIELD ROAD, LIVERPOOL TUESDAY 3 MAY 2005 at 19.45 UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE SEMI-FINAL, SECOND LEG LIVERPOOL FC v CHELSEA FC The goal-less draw at Stamford Bridge last Wednesday has set up a pulsating return leg for the fans at Anfield Road, who will doubtless want to enjoy the last home fixture in this season’s UEFA Champions League to the absolute maximum. Whether the Reds’ or the Blues’ supporters will be hurriedly making plans to travel to Istanbul is still very much an open question. The 0-0 scoreline offers positive and negative readings to both teams, with Chelsea FC preferring to focus on Liverpool FC’s lack of away goals at Stamford Bridge, which offers them an alternative winning option via a score-draw. On the other hand, Liverpool FC go into this match in a win-or-win situation but, having drawn the away leg, must feel confident of taking the honours in front of their own crowd. Whatever the outcome, an evening of tension and high drama is in prospect. For the first leg at Stamford Bridge last Wednesday, Liverpool FC striker Harry Kewell, who had played just twice since mid-December because of back, hamstring and groin troubles, was named on the substitutes’ bench. Milan Baros was given the lone striking role in the Reds' starting line-up - Xabi Alonso and Luís García, who both missed the previous Saturday's 1-0 defeat at Crystal Palace FC because of shin and thigh injuries respectively, were named in the Liverpool FC side. -
