First Exhibitors Confirmed for Showlight 2017 With 18 months to go until Showlight 2017 takes place in the beautiful Italian city of Florence, the first exhibitors have already confirmed their attendance. ARRI, German Light Products (GLP), Hawthorn and Robe are the first to sign up for the much-anticipated lighting quadrennial, scheduled for 20th - 23rd May 2017, with several other companies already lined up to join them. This is the tenth fixture for Showlight, a unique event in the entertainment industry, which has grown in popularity since it first appeared in London’s Barbican in 1981. “Showlight is always a memorable fixture in Hawthorn’s exhibition calendar, not only because it provides a great oversight of the very latest in lighting ideas, with time for everyone to attend presentations and digest ideas, but also gives an opportunity to network with industry colleagues old and new,” says Hawthorn’s managing director, Martin Hawthorn. Mark Ravenhill, president of GLP German Light Products Inc., is the first to agree, and equally fast to sign up as an exhibitor: “Showlight is just such a unique event and something that we look forward to. It’s great not only to support the event, but to be an active part of it. That’s what being an exhibitor allows us to do – to contribute and to participate. Having the opportunity to spend a great few days with so many colleagues from the industry makes Showlight such a joy to be a part of.” Showlight offers a unique blend of presentations, networking opportunities, visits and exhibition; a colloquium with an emphasis on encouraging students and professionals to enjoy the industry in all its breadth and variety. Showlight exhibitors have the unrivalled opportunity to present their products to entertainment lighting users and specifiers from around the world in a much closer environment than that offered by large-scale trade shows. The exhibition is closed during each conference session to allow everyone to attend the presentations. Each exhibitor hosts its own company dinner of a select number of delegates, and sponsors a lighting student, giving them an unprecedented introduction to some of the industry’s major figures, companies and ideas. Exhibitor spaces for this immensely popular event are strictly limited and allocated on a first come, first served basis. Companies interested in taking part should contact Jane Cockburn or Derek Gilbert without delay to secure a place. More details can be obtained by emailing them on exhibit@ showlight.org. The main sponsor for Showlight 2017 is Clay Paky. Accuframe Pro enhances dynamic image quality at both 60Hz and 120Hz. Aero Simulation Inc., (ASI) awarded Christie a contract for the display system refresh of T-45C Operational Flight Trainers, at the Naval Air Station in Meridian, Mississippi. The trainer upgrades, based upon Christie Matrix StIM-WQ projectors with Accuframe Pro, will provide the full range of out-the-window visual images required for pilot training. ASI is Christie’s ‘launch customer’ for AccuFrame Pro. Vlad Argintaru, ASI’s Senior Visual Systems Engineer stated: “AccuFrame Pro presents a significant improvement over traditional smear reduction methods, resulting in increased dynamic resolution in Christie simulation projectors. While most current methods typically impose a significant reduction in image brightness, AccuFrame Pro effectively controls image smear, while minimising brightness loss. These features are of particular benefit to a simulation program for an aircraft such as the T-45C, which as a fast jet requires maximum image smear reduction, as well as high brightness to support training objectives for night time landings on aircraft carriers using landing aid systems.”

S+H Helps Stars Glitter at Children in Need The main hub of the BBC’s 2015 Children in Need telethon was again Elstree Studios in Hertfordshire, where the marathon seven-hour live broadcast on BBC One united a glittering array of stars and a myriad of special collaborations all of which, along with thousands of activities taking place nationwide, helped raise an incredible 37 million pounds for the fundraising campaign. Drapes, softs and special effects company S+H Technical supplied 350 square metres of its animation cloth and 50 square metres of its RGB Starcloth product to the event, which were an essential element of the spectacular production design created by Alex Craig. Alex’s stunning studio set evoked fantasy images of both high-tech and retro fairground attractions and was based around multiple LED screens, surfaces and scenic decoration, with an impressive five-layered prosc arch and many dramatic curves. It provided dynamic backdrops to the all action line-up with guest appearances from Ellie Goulding, Selina Gomez, Jess Lynn and numerous others, plus lively specials like the cast of maverick soap East Enders performing a rousing rendition of Top Hat. He initially calculated how many areas of set would be required and then started curving shapes based around CIN mascot Pudsey Bear’s head, ears and arms, combined with the idea of fairground thrills like wavy rollercoaster tracks. The S+H Animation cloth – featuring high density individually controlled LED pixels that can create low-to-medium images, video loops and flash animations – was wrapped around the perimeter of the studio, run via one of the lighting consoles and effectively linked the colour and movement of the content and images appearing on the screens and other LED surfaces. These soft products also amplified the size of the set, particularly on camera, and gave a full 360 degree perspective so it looked a lot larger simply by filling in gaps with a light source, an effect particularly noticeable on the wide and moving crane shots. The starcloth was used behind some specific set pieces to create for those classic twinkling ‘magic’ television moments, of which there were many during the up-beat, lively show. Fundamental to the overall design was the desire to create: “A sense of excitement, occasion and also of scale,” explains Alex, adding that he also had to keep things practical for staging the diversity of back-to-back show items, many lasting only two or three minutes, in which time presenter resets and other processes are also taking place around the set. Keeping the whole environment energised and constantly changing was the major creative challenge across the broadcast which started at 7.30pm and finished at 2.30am on the Saturday morning, complete with 600 audience in the studio, and several million tuning in to catch CIN on TV at various times. photo: Ben Telford www.starcloth.co.uk

HSL is Faithless Faithless hit on the road again in 2015 after a four year break, taking their infectious dance rhythms to an eager public - celebrating 20 years since the formation of the band in the heady 1990s, when rave culture became a defining musical genre of the late 20th century. Andy Hurst was asked to create a visual concept and Blackburn rental company HSL supplied lighting equipment which included an investment in 300 Martin VDO Sceptron 10 LED battens, which were rigged on custom structures to form a giant ‘88’ digital clock face. The large digital figures were an idea that Andy and Sister Bliss from the bandhad thought about in the quest to have something different from conventional video with large screens and content on stage. When the dialogue with Andy started, he suggested that an impressive low resolution LED sign could be utilised for a number of different visual elements including writing the new album title, 2.0. In addition to looking distinctive, this had to be a practical concept to physically get on and off stage in 30 minutes during festival changeover slots in the summer before it moved up to arenas for the autumn. Once the idea was settled, Andy proposed using 264 Sceptrons for the sign which he’d seen launched at LDI 2014, and HSL went ahead and made the investment. “It was important that this feature looked structural, and using the Sceptrons I knew I could effectively have a full 10mm LED screen that looked highly dynamic and interesting in its own right and was also extremely versatile as a set piece,” he explained. The Sceptrons were fed with video content produced by Comix and stored on a Catalyst media server triggered from the Hog 4 Full Boar console running the lights which was operated on the road by Richard Larkum. The video materials were abstract and organic which worked fabulously well in producing the atmospheric, non-narrative aesthetic that the band wanted. Andy also wanted to have an intense laser show, both for sheer impact and to use as an alternative effect that was different and fresh, deciding on 25 Beam Bursts and 28 Lazer Blades on various trusses, some 18W RGBs at the back on the floor all provided via ER Productions. The Pangolin laser control system was also triggered via the Full Boar. When it came to choosing lights, Andy wanted a number of beam fixtures to complement the lasers and a load of LED strobes to contrast them, for which he chose 50 Philips’ RGB Nitros which also worked as a hi-energy wash source across the whole area. In the roof HUD-style pre-rigged trusses were installed and, together with six three-metre high truss towers on the stage, were rigged with 44 Clay Paky Sharpys and 24 Martin MAC Auras, with all the cabling and connectors travelling in the trusses making it extremely quick and straightforward to get in the air each day. Twenty-four High End Shape Shifters were dotted around the forestage area on stands and on the floor to provide another layer of high-impact LED light sources. While IMAG video was not part of the show look, Andy felt the performance space, when the show stepped up to the arenas, needed extending to the sides, so traditionally there would be IMAG side screens, two additional trusses were flown and loaded with Sharpys, lasers and strobes. HSL’s project manager and co-ordinator was Jordan Hanson. Full story etnow.com Production News photo: Louise Stickland

City Theatrical Launches SHoW DMX SHoW Baby 6 City Theatrical has launched the latest version of its popular wireless DMX/RDM transceiver, SHoW DMX the SHoW Baby 6. SHoW DMX SHoW Baby 6 gives users a sixth SHoW ID to broadcast on, for the first time allowing SHoW Baby users access to CTI’s innovative Maximum Bandwidth Technology. Maximum Bandwidth Technology allows SHoW Baby 6 to broadcast in the area of Wi-Fi channel 14, which is not used in the US and is not heavily used in other countries, thereby allowing users to avoid the more crowded areas of the 2.4GHz band. City Theatrical developed Maximum Bandwidth Technology to create more ways to avoid interference in an increasingly crowded 2.4GHz spectrum. The 2.4GHz portion of the spectrum is the optimum area for wireless DMX broadcast, allowing signals to pass through objects better than the 5.8GHz area, and able to carry more data than the 900MHz area. Using either the 5.8GHz or 900mHz areas of the spectrum require compromises that mission critical applications can’t tolerate. Choosing Maximum Bandwidth Technology is a simple selection from the onboard user interface that takes only seconds to make. Additionally, with six SHoW IDs, larger multi-universe systems can be scaled up, or as many as six independent SHoW Baby 6 systems can be used in the same area without interfering with each other. SHoW Baby 6 is compatible with all existing SHoW Babys, and since SHoW Baby is compatible with all SHoW DMX Neo products, SHoW Babys can be used as receivers in SHoW DMX Neo systems, or as a transmitter with City Theatrical’s D2 or D4 Neo LED dimmers, or QolorPoint Wireless LED Uplighters. SHoW Baby 6 is also compatible with the new ETC ColorSource Relay and ColorSource Transmitter. SHoW Baby 6 is a transceiver, and the method of selecting whether it is a transmitter or receiver is entirely plug and play. When a DMX cable is plugged into the SHoW Baby’s DMX Input, the unit senses the connection and automatically configures itself as a transmitter. If no cable is connected to the DMX Input, the unit automatically configures itself as a receiver. SHoW Baby 6 is available worldwide through all City Theatrical dealers.

White Light Supplies More than 40 Pantomimes White Light has reaffirmed its position as the leading lighting supplier to West End and UK touring theatre by working on a vast array of theatre productions and is continuing to support shows throughout the festive season by providing the lighting equipment on more than 40 pantomimes all across the UK. Since its formation 44 years ago, WL has built a strong reputation of supporting pantomimes, with this year being no exception. One of the most popular Christmas shows is the classic story of Snow White, which is currently playing at the Bournemouth Pavilion Theatre. Nev Milsom is the lighting designer on the production. He comments: “Snow White is such a lively, busy show so it was important that the lighting rig not only worked with the cast and scenery but also produced vivid colour and texture throughout. Pantomimes generally allow you to be much bolder in terms of lighting so I always enjoy this time of year!” To achieve the feel he wanted, Nev used Vari-Lite VLX Washes, Martin MAC TW1s, MAC 700 Profiles, ETC Source Four Profiles and Look Solutions unique haze machines. He comments: “This is my 16th year of lighting pantomimes, with this being my fifth Snow White. Every time I work on a show I try to do something different, which was the case here.” Nev also has a long history of working with WL. He adds: “I only have good things to say about WL, in particular Andy Cullen, who was a huge support throughout. It’s no surprise that I am designing three pantomimes this year and I am using WL equipment on every single one.” Another popular show this year is Cinderella and WL is supplying productions at Croydon’s Fairfield Halls, Richmond Theatre, Rhyl Pavilion and Tunbridge Wells’ Assembly Halls Theatre. The show at Tunbridge Wells is being lit by Morgan Jones, who has worked on several Cinderellas. He comments: “It was vital for me to create the magical atmosphere that is expected from a Cinderella pantomime. The main aim was to help create an enchanting show that the audience wouldn’t forget.” To complement the in-house rig at the Assembly Halls Theatre, Morgan drew on eight Martin MAC Vipers, nine Phillips SL pars and a Jem Glaciator X-Stream. He comments: “Being able to work with WL and create my ideal rig was a great experience. I was extremely happy with the equipment they supplied and it contributed towards a really special show.” No pantomime season is complete without Dick Whittington. WL is currently supplying three productions, one of which is at Aylesbury Waterside Theatre and stars X-Factor winner Sam Bailey. The show is being lit by Dee Ashworth, who first worked on Dick Whittington almost two decades ago. He comments: “This was the first show I have lit at Aylesbury and, with it being a pantomime, it was obviously a very large production. However, both the theatre and WL’s support has made the entire process very comfortable.” From WL’s extensive lighting range, Dee utilised the JB Lighting LED A7 Washes and Martin MAC Auras. He adds: “I have worked with WL since their Fulham days and they have always been extremely helpful with advice and problem solving. With the first Dick Whittington I lit, this was also a WL rig and it’s a company I have great confidence in.” As the festive season is now well underway, WL’s lighting equipment is being utilised in all corners of the UK. Andy Cullen, WL’s senior hires co- ordinator, comments: “Although we are working on such a huge range of shows, due to our extensive equipment and resources, we are able to offer each one the support it requires. Pantomimes are often the biggest shows of the year for many theatres so it’s important we do what we can to help each one achieve its potential.” www.whitelight.ltd.uk
