WORDS FROM THE WORD – Seven Things God Hates A LYING TONGUE REVIEW Proverbs 6:16-19 These six things doth the LORD hate: yea, seven are an (disgusting) unto him: (17) A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, (18) An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief, (19) A false witness that speaketh , and he that soweth discord among brethren. • WHY STUDY THIS PASSAGE? To get to know God better (when we understand His Heart (what offends Him), we know His nature and personality better) • WHY does God hate these things? They are AGAINST His very nature…They are OPPOSITE of His design o We must SEE them in ourselves AND hate them in ourselves. • “A look, a tongue, hands, a heart, feet. All sin is the of some power or faculty. The organ is innocent in itself, but it is prostituted to a base purpose. Every part of our nature is susceptible of this degradation. The more powers we have, the greater is our capacity of evil doing as well as of well doing.” • “The 7 things…are all characteristics of fallen Lucifer, and all of them stand in stark contrast to the characteristics of the Lord Jesus.” ~Phillips • “all the seven…belong to one man, the man of Belial.”

Proverbs 6:12-15 A naughty (belı̂ya‛al – without profit) person, a wicked man, walketh with a froward (perverse; distorted) mouth. (13) He winketh (w/ malice) with his eyes, he speaketh with his feet, he teacheth (to throw; point out) with his fingers; (14) Frowardness (perversity; to turn over) is in his heart, he deviseth mischief continually; he soweth discord. (15) Therefore shall his calamity come suddenly; suddenly shall he be broken without remedy. #1 – “a proud look” “proud” (v.17) rûm (room) A primitive root; to be high [also translated exalt himself; lift me up on high] “look” ‛ayin (ah'-yin) Probably a primitive word; an eye • A HIGH EYE • “scorning to look down upon others; or looking upon them with disdain (the feeling that someone or something is unworthy of one's consideration or respect);…having an high opinion of [your] own worth and merit. Pride is …directly opposite to God and to his nature…for "he resisteth the proud", (James 4:6 ) ; the pride of the heart shows itself in the eyes,…” ~Gill o The LORD calls us to humility (Ephesians 4:1-2: “I…beseech you that ye walk…With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love;”) o Do I consider myself BETTER than anyone in this church? ▪ James 2:1-10 My brethren, have not the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory, with respect of persons. (2) For if there come unto your assembly a man with a gold ring, in goodly apparel, and there come in also a poor man in vile raiment; (3) And ye have respect to him that weareth the gay clothing, and say unto him, Sit thou here in a good place; and say to the poor, Stand thou there, or sit here under my footstool: (4) Are ye not then partial in yourselves, and are become judges of evil thoughts? (5) Hearken, my beloved brethren, Hath not God chosen the poor of this world rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which he hath promised to them that love him? (6) But ye have despised the poor. Do not rich men oppress you, and draw you before the judgment seats? (7) Do not they blaspheme that worthy name by the which ye are called? (8) If ye fulfil the royal law according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself, ye do well: (9) But if ye have respect to persons, ye commit sin, and are convinced of the law as transgressors. (10) For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all. • “respect of persons” (v.1) prosōpolēpsia (pros-o-pol- ape-see'-ah) partiality, that is, favoritism [4x] o Romans 2:11 For there is no respect of persons with God. o Ephesians 6:9 says God is not partial and masters (bosses/leaders) should not be o Colossians 3:23-25 And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; (24) Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ. (25) But he that doeth wrong shall receive for the wrong which he hath done: and there is no respect of persons. ▪ No partiality in reward or ! o NOTE what the says to the high-eyed: ▪ Isaiah 2:11 The lofty looks of man shall be humbled (sunk)… o REMEMBER Lucifer was filled with PRIDE; Jesus was filled with a spirit of compassion and grace for others o WHAT DO WE LEARN ABOUT GOD? HE is HIGH above us in every way and IMPARTIAL – YET He extends mercy and grace and loves a humble spirit #2 – “a lying tongue” “lying” sheqer (sheh'-ker) an untruth; by implication a sham (often adverbially) [From to cheat; to be untrue] • Exodus 20:16 Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour. o An untruth/ against someone else • Psalm 33:17 An horse is a vain thing for safety: neither shall he deliver any by his great strength. o An untruth in our mind that causes us to act foolishly o What UNTRUTH’s might we rely on for SAFETY today? ▪ JOB, SAVINGS ACCOUNT, RETIREMENT PLAN, GOVERNMENT • Psalm 119:78 Let the proud be ashamed; for they dealt perversely with me without a cause: but I will meditate in thy precepts. o Pride is an untruth that causes us to cheat others of the respect that they deserve • Hosea 4:1-2 Hear the word of the LORD, ye children of Israel: for the LORD hath a controversy with the inhabitants of the land, because there is no , nor mercy, nor knowledge of God in the land. (2) By swearing, and lying, and killing, and stealing, and committing adultery, they break out, and blood toucheth blood. o NOTE: No truth is lumped with no mercy or knowledge of God THEN all of these things break out because there is no truth. “tongue” lâshôn (law-shone') the tongue (of man or animals), used literally (as the instrument of licking, eating, or speech), and figuratively (speech, an ingot, a fork of flame, a cove of water) [From to lick] • UNTRUTH that comes out of our mouth – against someone OR wrong principles based on wrong thinking OR pride • The Pulpit Commentary says, “Lying is hateful to God, because he is the God of truth...Lying is the willful perversion of truth, not only by speech, but by any means whatever whereby a false impression is conveyed to the mind.” o A FALSE IMPRESSION that WE are GOOD and OTHERS are EVIL • GOD HATES LYING – REMEMBER Ananias & Sapphira o In Acts 5:4, Peter tells Ananias, “thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God.” Fortunately, God doesn’t ALWAYS punish lying with DEATH o Would we have dropped DEAD this week if… We can (live a) lie by: ▪ making promises and commitments that we don’t keep. ▪ telling a story that makes us look good and someone else look bad by adding or leaving out ▪ professing to be one thing and in private being something else. o James 3:6-10 And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire (to cause a blaze; ignite [from to flash or flame]) the course of nature (genesis); and it is set on fire of (). (7) For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed of mankind: (8) But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. (9) Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God. (10) Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be. o Two SOBERING passages: ▪ 21:7 He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son. (8) But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with : which is the second death. ▪ Revelation 21:27 And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb's book of life. • NOTE that Psalm 119:78 gives the way to avoid our wrong thinking, speaking and acting • “The Lord…hates the deceitful tongue – the ‘lying tongue’ of Proverbs 6:17. Satan is the father of lies (John 8:44)…He is the author of all untruth, the ultimate source of all religious, philosophical, scientific, social, economic and political error. The Lord Jesus is the Truth. He told the truth to Caiaphas knowing it would cost Him His life (Matt. 26:62- 66). Pilate tried to fend off the growing feeling that he was the one who was really on trial by asking, ‘What is truth?’ even while staring [Truth] in the face (John 18:38).” JB Phillips • Colossians 3:9-10 Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds; (10) And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him: • WHAT DO WE LEARN ABOUT GOD? Because HE is TRUTH, He hates UNTRUTH in any form…but especially here…coming out of our mouths o Proverbs 12:22 Lying lips are abomination to the LORD: but they that deal truly are his delight. ▪ God DELIGHTS when we WALK IN TRUTH – our words, our thoughts, our actions
