>WONDER= SAFELY HOME IN PLATE MOTHER GOOSE =s >TDN Rising Star= (Medaglia SEALED WITH A KISS d=Oro) has become a throwback horse of sorts. Entering Saturday=s C$1-million Queen=s Plate at Woodbine, the May foal had made 11 starts in about 275 days, her longest >rest= being the 42 days she had between winning the Dec. 2 GII Demoiselle S. in and a runner-up effort in the Silverbulletday S. after relocating to New Orleans Jan. 13. The equine posterchild for >no rest for the weary,= the dark bay was equipped with a set of blinkers for the first time for the first leg of the Canadian Triple Crown and she responded with arguably her best career effort, kicking home impressively to score by a decisive 4 3/4 lengths. In so doing, she becomes the fourth filly to beat the boys in the Plate this decade, joining Inglorious (Hennessy, 2011), fellow Barber/Casse campaigner (Sligo Bay {Ire}, 2014) and last year=s winner Holy Helena (Ghostzapper). Whereas she raced from well off the pace when victorious two back in the GI and--circumstantially--when third as the 2-1 favorite to Monomoy Girl in the GI May 4, Midnight Bisou was ridden positively by Mike Smith and stalked the pace of her chief market rival, initially to her inside and then from her outside once Smith let her clear. Allowed to creep closer leaving the three-eighths point, Midnight Bisou was right alongside nearing the top of the lane and she kicked away from there with a minimum of fuss to score at will by a visually impressive six lengths. Road to Victory stayed on for second. Previously trained on the West Coast by Bill Spawr, Midnight Bisou, also a winner of this term=s GII Santa Ynez S. Jan. 7 and GIII Santa Ysabel S. Wonder Gadot | WEG/Michael Burns photo Away without incident from her double-digit draw, Wonder Gadot found herself in midfield as the Queen=s Plate field raced under the line with a circuit to travel, with >TDN Rising Star= and Plate Trial hero Telekinesis (Ghostzapper) having to work overtime on the business end of things. Three wide and on the back of Rose=s Vision (Artie Schiller) banking around the first turn, Wonder Gadot was guided out into the clear and had advanced into fifth spot passing midway, assuring a wide passage through the second half of the race. Always traveling like a winner, Wonder Gadot was felt for by Velazquez and loomed up four deep at the entrance to the straight, while Cooler Mike (Giant Gizmo) was simultaneously coming with a run underneath her. But the filly was always doing the superior work and she showed a nice burst of acceleration over the furthest trip of her career to prove not for catching. Aheadbyacentury (Midnight Lute) rallied nicely for second ahead of Cooler Mike. Casse was understandably over the moon and is looking forward to a return trip to the lower 48.

Latrobe went into several notebooks when second on debut LATROBE LEADS O=BRIEN over a mile at Leopardstown in October and was runner-up again on his return behind Hunting Horn (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) on DERBY DOMINATION testing ground over 10 furlongs at Naas Apr. 13. No match for Platinum Warrior (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) when second once more in the G3 Gallinule S. again at that trip here May 27, the dark bay was 1-7 when making all in his maiden and positive tactics were also the order of the day here as soon as Dee Ex Bee (GB) (Farhh {GB}) backed off the lead to allow Rostropovich past. That G2 King Edward VII S. runner-up is a notorious slow-starter, but Padraig Beggy was intent on rousing him awake from the outset and he soon took the field along with his -inherited generous stride. Latrobe kept him company as Saxon Warrior travelled strongly for Ryan Moore in behind and it was notable how the closers were failing to make any impact at the top of Latrobe | Racing Post the straight. Cont. p2 Aidan O=Brien had four of the first five home in Saturday=s G1 Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby at The Curragh, but incredibly it was IN TDN AMERICA TODAY Joseph who took the biggest prize with the unexposed Latrobe (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) in a renewal that will enter racing folklore. WONDER GADOT CLAIMS QUEEN’S PLATE Sent off at 14-1 coming in off an impressive 6 1/2-length Gary Barber’s Wonder Gadot (Medaglia d’Oro), a ‘TDN Rising course-and-distance maiden win June 9, the Lloyd Williams Star’ and runner-up in the GI Kentucky Oaks and Woodbine Oaks, colourbearer was sent up to race close to Rostropovich (Ire) returned to the winner’s circle in the Queen’s Plate at Woodbine on Saturday. Click or tap here to go straight to TDN America. (Frankel {GB}) with Donnacha O=Brien keen to put his mount=s stamina to full effect. The leader=s rider Padraig Beggy looked for a while up the straight as if he might pull off another Derby win to add to last year=s Epsom exploits as Rostropovich gave all tenaciously against the rail. He had reckoned without Latrobe, who gained the edge inside the final furlong and stayed on the better to prevail by a half-length, with the G1 2000 Guineas hero Saxon Warrior (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) just a neck back in third as the even-money favourite, 2 1/2 lengths and a half- length in front of stablemates Delano Roosevelt (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and The Pentagon (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), respectively. AIt was so special, I was hoping all the way up the straight that one of ours wouldn=t chin him,@ Aidan O=Brien said. AI=m delighted for the lads and Lloyd has been a massive supporter of Joseph since the start. Irish racing is so competitive every day. It=s tough, so this is an unbelievably special day. Donnacha is a big man and we=re so grateful that they are enjoying it and are able to do it. They=ve never known anything else, they know how constant it is--it=s a seven-days-a-week job--and I know how hard they work. We are so grateful to everyone for supporting them.@ TDN EUROPE/INTERNATIONAL • PAGE 2 OF 16 • THETDN.COM SUNDAY • 1 JULY 2018

G1 Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby Cont. from p1 thought Saxon Warrior would win well. He stepped up a good bit With the acceleration Saxon Warrior showed in the 2000 today and still has plenty of learning to do as a big horse. I=m Guineas eluding him on this occasion, the straight became a war doing 8-12 tomorrow and my weight is the same this year as it of attrition and the front two was last year--I don=t know if I=ll refused to buckle in a thrilling get another year or another five head-to-head. In the closing years riding.@ yards, Donnacha conjured that Joseph O=Brien, who witnessed extra bit from Latrobe to finally the colours carried to glory in subdue Rostropovich as Saxon the Melbourne Cup in Warrior ground on to his left. November, was similarly The winning rider, who was overjoyed. AIt=s unbelievable-- also successful in the I=m so delighted for Donnacha aforementioned Guineas on and all the lads in the yard at Saxon Warrior and the G1 home, especially Azhar Khan , was in dreamland. who looks after him and Joey AIt=s not really sunk in yet. It=s Fallon who rides him out every very special,@ he said. AI thought day,@ he said. AI=m so grateful to Johnston=s horse [Dee Ex Bee] Lloyd and Nick [Williams], who would go and I thought they=d Joseph & Donnacha O=Brien with Irish Derby winner Latrobe have been so good to me and go a stronger gallop, but when Racing Post we weren=t under any pressure they went slow I took him out and let him gallop and I ended up today. Donnacha was going to drop in and pick up the pieces further forward than I planned. That ended up with him getting late, but there was no pace so he let him go forward and that the run of the race, as they went slow. I thought I had a good proved the winning and the losing of the race.@ each-way chance, but I=d be lying if I said I thought I=d win as I Cont. p3 TDN EUROPE/INTERNATIONAL • PAGE 3 OF 16 • THETDN.COM SUNDAY • 1 JULY 2018

G1 Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby Cont. AHe=s never disappointed us--he was beaten by Hunting Horn and Donnacha said he would beat him the next day and in the Group 3 there was a slow pace and a sprint up the straight,@ he said. AThis is right up there with any days I=ve had.@ Of Latrobe=s future, he added, AI=d say that=s going to be his perfect trip. I wouldn=t have minded if the ground was a bit juicier, but obviously he doesn=t mind quick ground. We weren=t too worried about quick ground and I=d say he=s versatile enough. I really don=t know where he will go next. We=ll have to see how he comes out of this and then decide.@ Aidan O=Brien was dominating in numbers again despite missing out on the first spot and said of the beaten favourite, ASaxon Warrior probably travelled a bit strong and no one went so Padraig went on. That=s not the way we planned it, but that=s the way it fell. It was solid and we were delighted with the run. We always thought he would be going back to a mile and a quarter after today and that=s where he will be going. We=ll probably give him a little rest and obviously the [G1] Juddmonte [International at York Aug. 22] and the [G1] Irish Champion [S. at Leopardstown Sept. 15] are the races we=ve been looking at with him. He has all the pace in the world. Rostropovich ran a smashing race and got the trip well.@

ANOTHER RAILWAY FOR O=BRIEN Becoming the sixth individual horse to emerge from Royal Ascot and win, Van Beethoven (Scat Daddy) justified 9-10 favouritism to provide Aidan O=Brien with a 13th renewal of the G2 GAIN Railway S. at The Curragh on Saturday. Just seven days had passed since he was fourth in the Listed Windsor Castle S. over five furlongs in Berkshire and he travelled comfortably off the early pace with Ryan Moore biding his time. Sent upsides Marie=s Diamond (Ire) (Footstepsinthesand {GB}) approaching the final furlong, the bay ground it out to score by a half-length, with Certain Lad (GB) (Clodovil {Ire}) 1 1/4 lengths away in third. Despite the workmanlike impression, Ryan Moore was impressed. AHe=s a very good horse,@ he said. AAt Ascot things didn=t quite work out for him and I think the step up to six furlongs today suited him. I still expect him to improve when he gets into a deeper contest. I think he=s better than what he=s showed today, he=s got an awful lot of ability and in a deeper contest you=ll see a better horse.@ This race has often served as a stepping stone to the G1 Phoenix S. back over this course and distance Aug. 12 and his trainer is contemplating a dual raid on that.
