Cynthia Pozolo, vice president and director of architectural development at Albert Kahn Associates Inc., and 2007 president of the American Institute of Architects Detroit chapter, spoke with Crain’s reporter Andrew Dietderich. Among the topics touched on were green building and perceptions of Detroit.

With all the attention on green building and sustainable design, what are your thoughts on ’s progress in getting architects, developers and corporate real estate executives educated on the bottom- line benefits of environmental stewardship? Local media, design firms, and professional organizations have done an excellent job of educating consumers and the construction industry on environmental stewardship. Sorting out return on investment and risk- management issues remains a bigger challenge for our industry, with greater efficiency driven by increased client demands for responsible design. The bottom line benefit must be realized through policy and tax structure.
