It’s not the hospital, but whichever “heath system” the hospital belongs to that makes it so powerful. Ascen- sion Health, Trinity Health, The Catholic Health Corp., Catholic Health Partners, Seton Family of Hospitals, Catholic Health Initia- tives, and the list goes on. These health systems have great resources, and do billions of dol- lars of heath care from the east to the west coast. The Catholic hospi- tals are continuing their ministry in the health field, and doing a lot of good since so many churches and schools have closed in inner cities. But the vow of poverty must be more visible. The Riverview sale should have never happened. St. John’s and Karmanos should put their mar- bles back in the circle and start over without so much controversy. Ronald Plagens Farmington Hills More than a place to live Editor: Your June 11 Focus section on retirement communities was gen- erally informative, but omitting Jewish Apartments & Services seems like an oversight. We are home to 820 residents spread over seven buildings on two campuses and have an annual budget of just over $14 million. Some of our buildings are HUD buildings, but our market rate apartments are numerous and our 36 units of assisted living (which is licensed as adult foster care) is a model unlike any in the U.S. We are a nonprofit who is doing quite well in this Michigan economy, whose rent is still less than our competition, who has a waiting list for all of our buildings and who of- fers a unique mix of programming, daily activities and exceptional care. We’re more than just a place to live.
