ANDAMAN and NICOBAR ISLANDS (A Government Undertaking) ANDAMAN AND NICOBAR ISLANDS INTEGRATED DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION LTD (A Government undertaking) File No.1-716/ANIIDCO/2009/Vol-III/ 4352 dated 29/04/2011 NOTICE With reference to the advertisement for filling up the post of Junior Assistant and on preliminary scrutiny of applications based on recruitment rule and details furnished by the applicants, the list of shortlisted candidates and candidates not found eligible are given at Table A and B respectively. The written test will be held from 10 am to 12 noon on 7th August 2011 and Hall ticket will be issued to only shortlisted candidates during working hours from 4th & 5th August, 2011 from Vikas Bhawan, Port Blair and no individual hall ticket will be sent. Instructions will be mentioned in the hall ticket. Verification of Xth certificate regarding proof of age. 2. Verification of original certificate of educational qualification, category etc. 3. Candidates already engaged in Govt. service seeking age relaxation shall be subject to condition of 3 years continuous service to be verified later. 4. OBC candidates pertaining to other State meeting the eligibility criteria has been considered as General category. 5. One post is reserved for physically handicapped (hearing handicapped) therefore physically handicapped candidates pertaining to other category OH,VH etc has been considered under general or OBC etc as the case may be. The Hall ticket issued to the candidates shall be “Provisional” and in case, it is found at any stage that the candidate does not fulfill the eligibility criteria, his/her candidature will be cancelled.     Spoofs and the Politics of the Film Image’s Ontology in Tamil Cinema * Constantine V. Nakassis All Film Spoofs, No Spoof Films Commercial Tamil cinema has long been a travesty of itself, its textuality woven from so many citational allusions, homages, and self-parodies; and yet, until recently there was no such recognized genre of the spoof film, only “comedy tracks” trailing in the shadows of the grandiose hero and his more serious narrative, parodying his potent image here and there, most often through scenes of comically inverted or failed heroism (Nakassis 2010:209–221). In 2010, this was seen to have changed, with the release of a surfeit of spoof films—Venkat Prabhu’s Goa, Simbudevan’s Irumbu Kottai Mirattu Singam, and, most importantly for this paper, C. S. Amudhan’s aptly titled Thamizh Padam, or ‘Tamil Movie.’1 And then of course, there was that unwitting spoof hero, the self-proclaimed “Power Star,” Dr. S. Srinivasan, who entered the scene in 2011 with his unbel- ievably absurd, yet ambiguously self-serious, film (Lathika) and public persona (figure 1).2 Industry insiders and film enthusiasts often explain this seeming par- adox that Tamil cinema is all spoof with no spoofs by pointing to the self- seriousness of the industry—that is, that it can’t take a joke; or alter- natively by pointing to its cultural and historical particularity—that is, that “spoofs” are a foreign genre. But what is so notable is that the ind- ustry has long made jokes at its own expense. Think, for example, of Nagesh’s memorable comedy track from Sridhar’s classic 1964 romantic comedy Kadhalikka Neeramillai (‘No Time for Love’), which turns on Nagesh’s nascent film production: a parody of the film producer, Nagesh * Constantine V.

Nair’s assertion that in Indian films ‘women exist only in relation to the men, as their mothers, their wives, and especially their lovers’ is true of Tamil film narratives too (Jain and Rai 2002: 52). This portrayal of women has led to her social and cultural identity relying heavily, if not solely, on her being able to marry the right man. Moreover, the highly gendered Indian nationalism, relegating women to the ‘inner sphere’ and expecting them to remain pure (Chatterjee 1993), vests the responsibility of upholding culture in women, often subjecting them to standards higher than those set for men, the ‘outer sphere’. Weidman (2005: 754) adds that not only is inner sphere versus outer sphere a matter of men versus women but ‘as a difference between kinds of women: the respectable middle-class “family woman” and the lower class “prostitute”’, establishing idealised notions of womanhood that are manifested in tangible ways such as acceptable behaviour, appropriate language and appreciable clothing. In this paper, I explore the role of clothing in cinema in establishing such an identity for a Tamil woman over the years.
