The Carrying Trade and the First Railways in England, c1750-c1850 Carolyn Dougherty PhD University of York Railway Studies November 2018 Abstract Transport and economic historians generally consider the change from moving goods principally on roads, inland waterways and coastal ships to moving them principally on railways as inevitable, unproblematic, and the result of technological improvements. While the benefits of rail travel were so clear that most other modes of passenger transport disappeared once rail service was introduced, railway goods transport did not offer as obvious an improvement over the existing goods transport network, known as the carrying trade. Initially most railways were open to the carrying trade, but by the 1840s railway companies began to provide goods carriage and exclude carriers from their lines. The resulting conflict over how, and by whom, goods would be transported on railways, known as the carrying question, lasted more than a decade, and railway companies did not come to dominate domestic goods carriage until the 1850s. In this study I develop a fuller picture of the carrying trade than currently exists, highlighting its multimodal collaborative structure and setting it within the ‘sociable economy’ of late eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century England. I contrast this economy with the business model of joint-stock companies, including railway companies, and investigate responses to the business practices of these companies. I analyse the debate over railway company goods carriage, and identify changes in goods transport resulting from its introduction. Finally, I describe the development and outcome of the carrying question, showing that railway companies faced resistance to their attempts to control goods carriage on rail lines not only from the carrying trade but also from customers of goods transport, the government and the general public. -

A guide and list to a collection of Historic Railway Documents www.railarchive.org.uk to e mail click here December 2017 1 Since July 1971, this private collection of printed railway documents from pre grouping and pre nationalisation railway companies based in the UK; has sought to expand it‟s collection with the aim of obtaining a printed sample from each independent railway company which operated (or obtained it‟s act of parliament and started construction). There were over 1,500 such companies and to date the Rail Archive has sourced samples from over 800 of these companies. Early in 2001 the collection needed to be assessed for insurance purposes to identify a suitable premium. The premium cost was significant enough to warrant a more secure and sustainable future for the collection. In 2002 The Rail Archive was set up with the following objectives: secure an on-going future for the collection in a public institution reduce the insurance premium continue to add to the collection add a private collection of railway photographs from 1970‟s onwards provide a public access facility promote the collection ensure that the collection remains together in perpetuity where practical ensure that sufficient finances were in place to achieve to above objectives The archive is now retained by The Bodleian Library in Oxford to deliver the above objectives. This guide which gives details of paperwork in the collection and a list of railway companies from which material is wanted. The aim is to collect an item of printed paperwork from each UK railway company ever opened. -

Inscribed John sitting to Shannon at the lower centre. Further inscribed in pencil on the verso. 239 x 292 mm. (9 3/8 x 11 1/2 in.) ACQUIRED BY THE NATIONAL GALLERY OF ART, WASHINGTON, DC. This drawing depicts the artist's young son John Manners being painted by the Anglo-American artist James Jebusa Shannon (1862-1923), one of the leading society portrait painters in London, at his studio in Holland Park in 1897. The second son of the Marquess and Marchioness of Granby, John Henry Montagu Manners, Lord Roos (1886-1940) was ten or eleven years old at the time this drawing was made. His elder brother Robert, Lord Haddon, had died three years earlier, at the age of nine, and John was the heir to the dukedom. Educated at Eton and Trinity College, Cambridge, John Manners joined the Diplomatic Service and was posted to the British Embassy in Rome in 1909. The following year he was commissioned into the 4th Battalion Leicestershire Regiment as a 2nd Lieutenant. Although he was sent to the Western Front in 1915, Manners was kept away from the front lines by his superiors - much against his wishes and to his great shame later in life - largely due to the efforts and influence of his mother, the Duchess of Rutland, who was determined to keep her only surviving son well away from the fighting. -

Leicestershire and Nottinghamshire Wolds Area profile: Supporting documents Introduction National Character Areas map As part of Natural England’s responsibilities as set out in the Natural Environment White Paper,1 Biodiversity 20202 and the European Landscape Convention,3 we are revising profiles for England’s 159 National Character Areas (NCAs). These are areas that share similar landscape characteristics, and which follow natural lines in the landscape rather than administrative boundaries, making them a good decision-making framework for the natural environment. NCA profiles are guidance documents which can help communities to inform their decision-making about the places that they live in and care for. The information they contain will support the planning of conservation initiatives at a landscape scale, inform the delivery of Nature Improvement Areas and encourage broader partnership working through Local Nature Partnerships. The profiles will also help to inform choices about how land is managed and can change. Each profile includes a description of the natural and cultural features that shape our landscapes, how the landscape has changed over time, the current key drivers for ongoing change, and a broad analysis of each area’s characteristics and ecosystem services. Statements of Environmental Opportunity (SEOs) are suggested, which draw on this integrated information. The SEOs offer guidance on the critical issues, which could help to achieve sustainable growth and a more secure environmental future. NCA profiles are working documents which draw on current evidence and knowledge. The Mechanics Institutes: Pioneers of Leisure and Excursion Travel by Susan Barton In July 1841, the excursion organised by Thomas Cook to a temperance rally in Loughborough 'took a trip into history'. Less well known than this famous journey are the pioneering rail excursions organised by the Mechanics' Institutes during the two preceding years. This paper is concerned with the story of the excursion undertaken by the Mechanics Institutes of Leicester and Nottingham during the summer of 1840. With the opening of the Midland Counties Railway in May 1840, there existed for the first time in the East Midlands a means of quick mass conveyance between the region's towns which enabled people to travel for leisure purposes in a manner without previous local precedent. The Mechanics utilised the potential of steam-powered rail travel to visit the exhibitions in Leicester and Nottingham in 1840. These exhibitions were organised by their respective Mechanic Institutes with the aim of providing education, entertainment and raising funds. The reciprocal visits between the two towns' were a tremendous success and provided inspiration for subsequent leisure excursions and the imminent development of the tourism industry. The Mechanics' Institutes were founded during the first half of the nineteenth century to promote education amongst skilled workers and artisans or 'mechanics'. Leicester's Institute was founded in 1833 and Nottingham's in 1837. They were concerned with education in the broadest possible sense, from basic instruction in literacy and numeracy to lectures on the latest scientific ideas. Education was not just about learning skills and facts, but involved cultural and personal development, hence the provision of libraries, classical music concerts, travel as well as the exhibitions with which this paper is concerned. -

Review 2016 BELVOIR CRICKET & COUNTRYSIDE TRUST Patron's Message 1 I am delighted to report that the Trust has reached out to over 2,700 children this year which is a superb achievement and I would like to congratulate Darren and his team on another successful year. It is lovely to see all the smiling faces every time I drive past the cricket ground at Knipton during the summer and I was especially pleased to be able to welcome the children from Fountaindale Special Needs School to our Castle in July. Most of these children suffer from very severe physical disabilities, whilst keeping an amazing sense of humour and good spirit. We could not fit the specially designed wheelchairs into the cricket pavilion at Knipton so we were able to invite them into the castle to ensure they had a great day with us. On the subject of facilities, I am delighted to hear that the Trust has an ambition to re-develop the pavilion at Knipton. Our grounds here at the Castle have undergone some huge changes in recent times and I fully support the need for new purpos-built facilities at Knipton which will complement the work of the Trust but also support our local community which is very important to me.
