There are slightly more females than males. There are higher proportions of children and working age people here than across the borough, with a lower proportion of older people. Birkdale has a lower proportion of Registered Social Landlord (RSL) housing (4.5%) as compared with Sefton at 12.9% along with lower percentages of vacant properties (1.6%) compared to the borough percentage (2.8%). Deprivation & Birkdale is made up of eight Lower Super Output Areas (LSOA) none of which are within the most deprived 10% or 20% of areas national, Child Poverty in addition relative deprivation level have decreased since 2004. None of the LSOAs are amongst the worst 10% nationally for deprivation affecting older people; although levels have increased when compared to 2004. Child poverty is relatively low in the ward with 10.8% of the child population living in poverty. Worklessness There are 965 claimants within Birkdale and there has been an increase in the rate year on year (2.7%). Latest available figures show a & Benefits year on year rise of 0.3% for JSA claimants; Young people (18 – 24) make up over a quarter all JSA claimants in Birkdale. There are nearly twenty JSA claimants in the ward for every Job Centre Plus vacancy; this is higher than the borough and national rates. Employment In 2001, 73.8% of residents within the Birkdale ward were employed; this is higher than the borough rate. Managers and senior official roles & Income are most common employment type in Birkdale, accounting for 16% of all occupations. The average weekly wage in the Southport Constituency is 11.8% lower than the Bootle average and 22.5% lower than the Sefton Central average. On average males in the Southport Constituency earn 20% more than females. (There is no data available by ward for average weekly wage) Crime / There is a lower crime and disorder count per 100 pop in Birkdale ward than the Sefton rate (4.93 compared to 6.76). Overall British Crime Disorder & Survey (BCS) Crimes increased and Anti Social Behaviour (ASB) incidents decreased. Five of the BCS categories have increased, vehicle Environmental interference showed the biggest increase (150%). Criminal Damage offences are still the biggest concern in the ward. Two of the ASB Issues categories showed an increase, nuisance neighbours and vehicle nuisance – 61 (33%) and 26 (8%). Respectively rowdy / inconsiderate behaviour has become more of an issue in the ward making up 59% of all the ASB calls compared to 57% the previous year. As with BCS and ASB counts, overall environmental issues reduced in Birkdale by 10.5%. Stray and aggressive dogs remains the most prominent environmental issue within Birkdale, and accounts for over a quarter of all Environmental calls for service. Education Christ he King High school’s average educational attainment has shown overall increases in the percentage of pupils achieving Level 4 or above in KS2 both English and maths. In 2011, the attainment rates for the secondary school were just lower than the Sefton but higher than national averages. Average overall absence rates along with average persistent absence rates in Birkdale are higher than the national and Sefton levels. Christ the King has less pupils eligible for free school meals compared to the borough and national figures. Health & Nearly one in five Birkdale ward residents are smokers and nearly half the population are overweight or obese. 63.6% of residents in Alcohol Birkdale are achieving the recommended amount of 30 minute exercise five times a week. This is nearly double the national average and Misuse slightly lower than Sefton as a whole. In addition to this 62.4% of the residents state they consume the recommended five portions of fruit or vegetables a day this is higher than the Sefton and national rates (57.3% and 29%). By year 6 (ages 10 – 11) nearly a fifth of Birkdale children are obese; this is lower than the borough and equal to England. Residents assess themselves as being in good or fairly good health, life expectancy for people living in the area is higher than the borough and national averages. In addition to this, Birkdale has a lower proportion of residents suffering from long term conditions, along with lower levels of child emergency hospital admissions than Sefton as a whole. Over a quarter of Birkdale’s residents suffer from below average mental wellbeing. Birkdale’s proportion of residents that state they consume above the recommended weekly allowance of alcohol, binge drink are higher than the borough rates and levels of alcohol related hospital admissions are lower than the Sefton and national rates.
