Overview

Population & In 2010, Birkdale’s estimated population was 12,125 this has decreased since 2001 by 7.98% (1,052), at a greater rate than the borough as Housing a whole. There are slightly more females than males. There are higher proportions of children and working age people here than across the borough, with a lower proportion of older people. Birkdale has a lower proportion of Registered Social Landlord (RSL) housing (4.5%) as

compared with Sefton at 12.9% along with lower percentages of vacant properties (1.6%) compared to the borough percentage (2.8%). Deprivation & Birkdale is made up of eight Lower Super Output Areas (LSOA) none of which are within the most deprived 10% or 20% of areas national, Child Poverty in addition relative deprivation level have decreased since 2004. None of the LSOAs are amongst the worst 10% nationally for deprivation affecting older people; although levels have increased when compared to 2004. Child poverty is relatively low in the ward with 10.8% of the child population living in poverty.

Worklessness There are 965 claimants within Birkdale and there has been an increase in the rate year on year (2.7%). Latest available figures show a & Benefits year on year rise of 0.3% for JSA claimants; Young people (18 – 24) make up over a quarter all JSA claimants in Birkdale. Crime / There is a lower crime and disorder count per 100 pop in Birkdale ward than the Sefton rate (4.93 compared to 6.76). Overall British Crime Disorder & Survey (BCS) Crimes increased and Anti Social Behaviour (ASB) incidents decreased. Five of the BCS categories have increased, vehicle Environmental interference showed the biggest increase (150%). Criminal Damage offences are still the biggest concern in the ward. Two of the ASB Issues categories showed an increase, nuisance neighbours and vehicle nuisance – 61 (33%) and 26 (8%). Respectively rowdy / inconsiderate behaviour has become more of an issue in the ward making up 59% of all the ASB calls compared to 57% the previous year. environmental issue within Birkdale, and accounts for over a quarter of all Environmental calls for service. Education Christ he King High school’s average educational attainment has shown overall increases in the percentage of pupils achieving Level 4 or above in KS2 both English and maths. In 2011, the attainment rates for the secondary school were just lower than the Sefton but higher than national averages. Average overall absence rates along with average persistent absence rates in Birkdale are higher than the national and Sefton levels. Christ the King has less pupils eligible for free school meals compared to the borough and national figures.

Figures for February 2012 show the total rate of claimants in Birkdale (965) has increased by 2.7 % (an actual count reduction of 25) since February 2011, this is slightly above the increase in rates seen in the borough as a whole (1.8%).

Figures released for July 2012 show there are currently 230 Job Seekers Allowance claimants (aged 18 to 64) in Birkdale, a rise of just 4.55% (10) on July 2011. The number of 18-24 year old claimants has reduced from 70 to 60, and claimants aged 25-49 has increased from 115 to 130.
