1976-1977 Cincinnati Stingers 1976-1977 Coach: Terry Slater CINCINNATI Record: 39-37-5, 83 points STINGERS Finish: 2nd, Eastern Division Playoffs: Lost in First Round to Indianapolis The second-year Stingers made a dramatic improvement overall, especially on offense where the team was second in the league with 354 goals. The Stingers featured two 50-goal scorers—Richie Leduc and Blaine Stoughton, both with 52—and two 40-goal scorers: Dennis Sobchuk with 44, Rick Dudley with 41. Terry Slater’s club started fast with a 17-10-2 record, then played break- even for the rest of the season. Despite the impressive offense, the Stingers still played a weak defense, permitting 303 goals, although defenseman Ron Plumb had his best season, with a league-leading +64 rating, 58 assists and winning the league’s best defenseman award. Overall, the Stingers finished 39-37-5, second place in the Eastern Division. In their first playoff series, the Stingers lost a heart-breaking three-overtime contest against Indianapolis in the first game, then were swept by the Racers, a sudden end to a promising year. • Season IV: 1975-1976
Season IV: Jets Capture First Crown Tardif & Cloutier Scoring Stars 1975-1976 Fighting Mars League Image The World Hockey Association opened its fourth season with high hopes after Award Winners three previous seasons of steadily increasing attendance figures. Two teams would not be back for the 1975-76 campaign: the Chicago Cougars folded immediately after the previous season’s end, and the Baltimore Blades ceased operations not long after. In their places were two expansion franchises: the Cincinnati Stingers and the Denver Spurs. There was just one franchise shift: the Vancouver Blazers moved across the Rockies to Calgary, becoming the Cowboys. The fourteen teams were divided into three divisions. Calgary, Edmonton, Québec, Toronto and Winnipeg made up the Canadian Division; Cincinnati, Cleveland, Indianapolis and New England comprised the Eastern Division, Most Valuable Player Rookie of the Year Gordie Howe Trophy Lou Kaplan Trophy while the Western Division included Denver, Houston, Minnesota, Phoenix and Marc Tardif Mark Napier San Diego. Québec Toronto Denver’s Spurs could not make it to the new year; they vacated Denver at the end of December, played two home games in Ottawa in early January 1976, and disbanded altogether two weeks later. Six weeks after Ottawa’s departure, the Minnesota Fighting Saints folded, paring the league to twelve teams. The patchwork schedule used for the remainder of the season saw some teams play 81 games so that other teams could reach 80. Disparities abounded: Québec and Toronto tangled 16 times, while Winnipeg and San Diego squared off on only three occasions. Best Goaltender Best Defenseman Winnipeg and Québec fought hard for the top spot in the Canadian Division, Ben Hatskin Trophy Dennis Murphy Trophy Winnipeg squeaking ahead with 106 points, two ahead of Québec.

  • 1977-1978 Cincinnati Stingers
1977-1978 Coach: Jacques Demers CINCINNATI Record: 35-42-3, 73 points STINGERS Finish: 7th, League Playoffs: Did Not Qualify The Stingers’ third season was lost within the first month: a 1-8-0 start put the team too far back to overcome, although a strong second half gave the Stingers 35 wins, but no playoff appearance. There were high hopes, after the Stingers were able to gut the core of their rivals Indianapolis by signing coach Jacques Demers, goaltender Michel Dion and defenseman Pat Stapleton. However, the new “Cincinnapolis Ringers” never formed a cohesive unit, and numerous trades and minor-league call-ups did not help to maintain a sense of consistency. Individually, many players turned in fine seasons: Center Robbie Ftorek scored 59 goals and 109 points. Rick Dudley scored 30 goals and collected 156 penalty minutes, while Jamie Hislop, Peter Marsh and Richie Leduc all scored at least 20 goals. Pat Stapleton was the best of the blueliners, a +6 and often the point-man on the attack. Ron Plumb had a solid year, partly reduced by injuries. Michel Dion led the league with 4 shutouts, with a young Mike Liut backing him, but ultimately, the Stingers gave up too many goals (332) and were forced to watch the 1978 playoffs on the television. • Ernie Wakely
Ernie Wakely Ernie is a true case of real perseverance. He turned pro in 1960 and by 1969 had played a grand total of 2 NHL games, both with the Montreal Canadiens and those 2 games were 6 years apart. Montreal traded Ernie to St. Louis in 1969 and that season he led the NHL in goals against average after replacing Hall of Famer Glenn Hall in the nets! How’s that for sticking with it only to prove yourself! He must have learned a lot as a back-up to the legendary Jacques Plante with the Blues. The next season, Plante was gone from St. Louis and Ernie had the main role to himself. He played 51 games that season, losing only 14 of them, and played in his first and only all-star game. He led the Blues to the Stanley Cup finals only to lose in four straight games to Bobby Orr and the Boston Bruins. After one last season with the Blues, Ernie signed with the WHA’s Winnipeg Jets in his home province. After two seasons in Winnipeg, Ernie traveled throughout the WHA to teams like the San Diego Mariners, Cincinnati Stingers, Houston Aeros, Birmingham Bulls and Phoenix Roadrunners. He was a WHA Second Team All Star in 1978 with the Aeros. Ernie was an outspoken Christian during his years in hockey and it was his witness that led teammate and fellow goaltender, Joe Daley, to give up drinking and give his life over to the Lord.
