Davies Faces Mathews on Haye Vs. Bellew Undercard DAVIES FACES MATHEWS ON HAYE VS. BELLEW UNDERCARD Ohara Davies will defend his WBC Silver Super-Lightweight title against ‘Dirty’ Derry Mathews on the undercard of the David Haye vs. Tony Bellew’s Heavyweight blockbuster on March 4 at The O2 in London, live on Sky Sports Box Office. Undefeated Davies won a unanimous decision over Andrea Scarpa at Wembley Arena in November and had called out Mathews on Twitter after the Liverpool fighter’s Commonwealth Lightweight title defeat to Luke Campbell a month earlier. Former World title challenger Mathew’s has stepped up a division to answer that call and as he hunts to get back in the mix for major honours, but Davies has promised to KO his opponent into retirement at The O2. “I’m happy the fans finally get the fight they want to see,” said Davies. “For Derry, I’m happy he has got the fight that he wants but what both the fans and Derry must understand is, I’m not here to play. “I’m here to win World titles. Derry Mathews’ name must be added to my KO record for me to continue the journey. “Come March 4 I will be in the best shape of my life, and I will retire Derry Mathews for good.” Mathews said: “I have to shut him up, he’s done my head in. I just want to smash him to bits. “I don’t know where all this has come from because I don’t know the kid – is it all for publicity or is he really that mouthy and disrespectful? I’ve never met him so I couldn’t say, but he seems a strange one. “He’s got a chip on his shoulder. I think over my career I’ve gained the respect of my fans by the fights that I’ve been in. He’s trying to get a big-name fight by calling people out on Twitter, badmouthing people. As soon as I was offered the fight I jumped at it. I want to beat him bad. “There will be lots of Scousers there but I think half of London wants me to beat him too. He’s got a horrible attitude and he comes across badly on social media. He’s trying to be a bad boy but he’s hanging out with TV stars from TOWIE. I don’t know what he is – is he a London bad boy or an Essex TV star? I don’t think he knows himself, but I know he’ll be getting in a cab home after the fight with Arg and no belt. “He’s the WBC Silver champion but I think he’s been handed that on a plate – it’s the same belt that Callum Smith and Luke Campbell have and they’ll fight for World titles this year. Davies shouldn’t be on a par with them, so I am going to rip that belt off him and get my name back in the mix and this time at 10st. “I always spar around 10st 4lbs and I feel better, and I think that even though I am moving up I will be the bigger man in there. That extra weight is going to add to my power and strength.” Tickets for Haye vs. Bellew sold out in record-breaking time when they went on sale in December..

  • Buckland: I Can Make Prizefighter History Tomorrow
BUCKLAND: I CAN MAKE PRIZEFIGHTER HISTORY TOMORROW Gary Buckland says he will let the favourite tag stop him from making history in tomorrow night’s Prizefighter Lightweights III tournament at the York Hall, Bethnal Green, live on Sky Sports. Buckland is looking to become the third fighter to win the title for a second time and the first two-weight champion, and is the bookies’ pick to triumph in the 34th edition of Matchroom Sport’s eight-man, one night event. The Welshman triumphed here back in September 2010 in the Super Featherweights, stunning a star-studded field to take the title. ‘Dynamo’ edged out Stevie Bell in the quarter- finals before a brilliant first round KO of Gary Sykes landed him a place in the final against Derry Mathews, where he stopped the Scouser in the second round. “It was four years ago and I only did five rounds on the night, because I was stopping them,” said Buckland. “That was good then but I wished I had the nine rounds now. There was no KO bonus then either! But I have that experience to call on and we’ve trained exactly the same way to get the same result. I don’t like being the favourite, last time out I was an outsider at 12/1 and I went and won it, I KO’d the favourite that night in Gary Sykes and Choi lost to Derry in a war before I beat him in the final, so the odds and who is the favourite doesn’t mean a thing, you just have to pour everything you have into every second.” The 28 year old has happy memories of that night but his last outing was here too and ended in defeat to Richard Commey for the Commonwealth title.

  • The Wbo World Lightweight Championship Terry Flanagan V Orlando Cruz
THE WBO WORLD LIGHTWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP TERRY FLANAGAN V ORLANDO CRUZ WBO Lightweight Champion Terry Flanagan (31-0 12 KOs) will make the fourth defence of his World title against Puerto Rico’s former World title challenger Orlando Cruz (25-4-1 13 KOs) on Frank Warren’s huge November 26th Motorpoint Arena Cardiff show, live and exclusive on BoxNation. Welsh fights fans will be treated to an incredible five title fights at the Motorpoint Arena; two World title fights, two British title fights and one European fight. Big time boxing has well and truly returned to Cardiff. When Flanagan stopped American challenger Diego Magdaleno in a hail of punches back in October 2015 during the maiden defence of his WBO World Lightweight title, it had taken the Manchester southpaw under six minutes to prove his world class credentials. Then in March the Steve Maylett trained star retained his WBO crown with a wide points decision over tough as nails Liverpool veteran Derry Mathews in an absorbing arm wrestle of a fight in front of a packed-out Liverpool Echo Arena. Last time out at the Ice Arena Wales Flanagan successfully made the third defence of his World title against the experienced and tricky Mzonke Fana. South Africa’s Fana provided Flanagan with a stern test but the Ancoats man came away with a unanimous decision win. Cruz, 35, fought for Puerto Rico at the Sydney Olympics in 2000 and ran undefeated for a full nine years before losing to America’s Cornelius Lock by TKO in 2009. During a glittering career Cruz has held the WBO Latino Featherweight and WBO NABO Super-Featherweight titles.

  • Dodd Defends Wbc International Strap Against Patera
DODD DEFENDS WBC INTERNATIONAL STRAP AGAINST PATERA Sean ‘Masher’ Dodd will defend his WBC International Lightweight title against Francesco Patera at the Echo Arena in Liverpool on Saturday October 15, live on Sky Sports. Dodd landed the crown in May at Goodison Park with a points win over Pasquale Di Silvio and the popular Birkenhead man makes his first defence in Liverpool as he looks to cement his place in the WBC rankings and move up the ladder. Patera will be aiming to rip the crown from ‘Masher’ though and the 23 year old from Genk has plenty of pedigree behind him at such a tender age. Patera landed the Belgian title in May 2015 in his 11th pro outing, and took Yvan Mendy – the Frenchman that floored and beat Luke Campbell for the International strap in London in December – the distance in May when they met for the EU title, the sole loss on his 17 fight record. Dodd – who was set to face Gary Sykes before the Dewsbury man announced his retirement – is looking to impress in front of the Sky Sports cameras once again following his win at Everton FC and his toe-to-toe British title tussles with Scotty Cardle, and the 32 year old knows this is a great chance to put his name out there for more major titles. “I’m really looking forward to defending my belt for the first time,” said Dodd. “Goodison Park was an epic night for boxing in Liverpool and it’s one that’s going to be talked about for years.

  • Crolla Says Good Chance of Facing Winner of Flanagan- Mathews in Unification Showdown
CROLLA SAYS GOOD CHANCE OF FACING WINNER OF FLANAGAN- MATHEWS IN UNIFICATION SHOWDOWN Manchester’s WBA World Lightweight champion Anthony Crolla is excited at the prospect of facing the winner of Terry Flanagan and Derry Mathews in a massive all British unification showdown. Promoter Frank Warren offered Crolla £500,000 to face the winner out of Flanagan, the reigning WBO king, and Mathews, who clash on Saturday 13th February at the Liverpool Echo Arena exclusively live on BoxNation, and the Mancunian says there’s a good chance of the fight happening. He said, “It’s a great offer but I can’t really consider it knowing that I’ve got a fight to come. Both teams can come to the table and talk after our next fights are behind us so there’s every chance of the fight happening.” Crolla lost to Liverpool’s Mathews earlier in his career by a sixth round stoppage and then a year later they battled to a draw, but Crolla would be keen for revenge. However, ‘Million Dollar’, who attended the same school as Flanagan, can’t see past a win for his fellow Mancunian come fight night. He said: “I fancy Terry to stop Derry between rounds six and eight. Derry is a brave fighter but I think Terry’s style is all wrong for him, he beat him up in Prize Fighter and he’s only got better since then so I don’t see it being different this time round. If Derry is going to win he needs to catch Terry with a big punch early.

  • Derry Mathews Says Failure Isn’
DERRY MATHEWS SAYS FAILURE ISN’T AN OPTION Liverpool hero Derry Mathews has vowed to beat Manchester’s Terry Flanagan in what he says will be his last ever shot a world title. The all-action Scouser is back in Spain preparing for his make or break showdown with his bitter North West rival on Saturday 12th March, exclusively live on BoxNation. “Everything in my career has led up to this moment and it really doesn’t get any bigger than this. If I get beat I’m not going to get another shot at a world title and that’s what’s driving me on in the gym. Losing just isn’t an option. When I beat Terry he’ll be able to come again because he’s still young but this is last chance saloon for me,” said Mathews. He added: “I should have been waking up on Valentine’s Day as a world champion but instead I’m back in the gym putting the hours in. Waiting another month makes no difference to me because he’s only delaying the inevitable. I believe that the best Derry Mathews beats any lightweight in the world. I’m the biggest puncher out there with both hands and I can knock people out with my left and right. I’ll be taking Terry to places he’s never been before.” Flanagan, 26, is back in full training after making a successful recovery from his injured left foot that forced him to postpone his word title defence. The unbeaten Mancunian has been working closely with Manchester City’s lead physiotherapist Paul Kelly in a bid to return to full fitness but Derry says he is surprised Terry’s team chose to postpone the fight.

  • Dodd: People Thought I Was Crap – Now They Know I Am for Real
DODD: PEOPLE THOUGHT I WAS CRAP – NOW THEY KNOW I AM FOR REAL Sean ‘Masher’ Dodd says he’s finally getting the respect he deserves as he defends his Commonwealth Lightweight title against Tommy Coyle at the Echo Arena on Saturday night, live on Sky Sports. Dodd puts his title on the line for the second time having seen off Liverpool rival Tom Stalker in September, another key win in his remarkable rise in the three years since seeing off Gary Buckland in September 2015. ‘Masher’ shared two great fights with Scotty Cardle for the British title, narrowly missing out on both occasions before picking up and defending the WBC International crown then defeating Lee Appleyard last April to pick up the Commonwealth crown. The Birkenhead man’s rise now sees him pitted as a slight favourite against all-action Hull man Coyle, and Dodd believes that’s recognition for the fairytale ride he’s on – that he doesn’t plan to let Coyle stop. “It’s nice that people think that I am going to win and start to believe that I’m for real,” said Dodd. “I adapt and that’s what champions do, I’ve never won every fight in just one way; I’ve had to box on the front foot, be on the back foot, been the aggressor, counter-punched – I’ve got a lot of strings to my bow to win fights. “People think that I am crap and easy to beat – so whenever I win there’s always a queue of people that want to fight me.

  • Liverpool-Man City Level, but Mathews Says He'll
LIVERPOOL-MAN CITY LEVEL, BUT MATHEWS SAYS HE’LL DELIVER THE KO BLOW DECIDER Revenge is a dish best served cold and world title challenger Derry Mathews will be looking to take a leaf out of Liverpool FC’s book after the Reds all but ended Manchester City’s title hopes last night. Jurgen Klopp’s men avenged their heart-breaking League Cup final defeat by emphatically smashing City for three at Anfield in a dominating performance. ‘Dirty’ Derry’s huge world title showdown with Manchester’s lightweight King Terry Flanagan is rapidly approaching and the Merseyside hero has promised to land another knockout blow on his North West rivals by dethroning their unbeaten champion. “I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again; I don’t lose rematches, especially against Mancs. Liverpool avenged our loss in the cup and I’ll be avenging my Prize Fighter loss when I take Terry’s belt from him next week,” said Mathews. He added: “We had them up against the ropes the entire night and I’ll be doing the same to Terry next Saturday. We’ll be going toe-to-toe in a proper dust up, there’ll be no dancing around avoiding each other. It’s evenly poised at 1-1 now and I’ll be smashing him up to take the decider.” Many people in the boxing world have ‘Turbo’ down as the clear favourite but Mathews is unfazed by taking the role of the underdog. The big-hitting Scouser is as tough as they come and is relishing the opportunity to prove his doubters wrong.
