    Kameshia Shepherd The Superhero Genre: Exhibitions Which Explore the Identities, Costumes, and Missions of the Superheroes When the superheroes emerged in the late 1930s and early 1940s they had dual identities, sidekicks, powers and abilities, arch-villains, a costume, a moral code, and a top-secret headquarters but a lawsuit in 1940 established identity, power, and mission as the fundamental attributes of the superhero genre. According to Peter Coogan in Superhero: The Secret Origin of a Genre, Judge Learned Hand estab- lished these three elements in a copyright and infringement lawsuit between two comic book companies. In the case of Detective Comics, Inc. v. Bruns Publica- tions, Inc., DC Comics filed a suit which claimed that Bruns Publication’s super- hero Wonder Man was a duplicate of their character Superman. Judge Learned Hand agreed and stated in his ruling that Wonder Man copied Superman’s dual identities, various powers, and pro-social mission. Based on this copyright law- suit, Coogan argued that Judge Hand had unknowingly provided the definitional characteristics of a superhero.1 Coogan took Judge Hand’s interpretation a step further by combing all of the elements of Hand’s verdict to comprise his own definition. Coogan’s superhero is: A heroic character with a selfless, pro-social mission; with superpowers-extraordinary abilities, advanced technology, or highly developed physical, mental, or mystical skills; who has a superhero identity embodied in a codename and iconic costume, which typi- cally expresses his [or her] biography,

    The Weird History of USAmerican Fascism: A Guide (1979-2019) PhD in Critical and Cultural Theory 2019 M.C. McGrady Summary The future, as ever, can be read in comic books. Foretold by the Dark Age of Comics, the doom that now comes to Earth arrives in the form of self-realizing eschatologies, horrors born out of the rutting between unfettered capitalism and its favorite child, technological hubris. When the Big Two comic book publishers began hiring British and Irish authors en masse over the course of the 1980s, these writers brought with them a critical eye sharpened by the political and economic cruelty of the decade. The victims of the Iron Lady came to the New World and set their sights on the empire of the Teflon President, using superhero stories to explore the ideological weapons deployed in the service of global capitalism. The Weird History of USAmerican Fascism tracks the interrelated networks of popular culture and fascism in the United States to demonstrate the degree to which contemporary USAmerican politics embodies the future that the fictional dystopias of the past warned us about. Although the trans-Atlantic political developments of 2016 and their aftermath have sparked a widespread interest in a resurgent Anglophone fascism and its street-level movements – seen most obviously in the loose collection of white supremacists known as the ‘alt- right’ – this interest has been hamstrung by the historical aversion to a serious study of popular and ‘nerd’ culture during the twentieth century. By paying attention to the conceptual and interpersonal networks that emerged from the comic books and videogames of the 1980s, The Weird History of USAmerican Fascism fills a critical lacuna in cultural theory while correcting recent oversights in the academic analysis of contemporary fascism, providing an essential guide to the past, present, and future of the bizarre world of USAmerican politics.

    ALWATAN DAILY CULTURE THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 11, 2010 19 Artist Ghadah Alkandari fires a ‘Pretty Green Bullet’ at Sultan Gallery “I do believe that if people keep congratulating you, one stops growing as an artist.” Onilda Fernandes Staff Writer KUWAIT: Ghadah Alkandari reprised her three roles as a famed artist, blogger and mother to three children (not necessarily in that order) at the Sultan Gallery, on Tuesday with her exhibition titled ‘Pretty Green Bullet’. On one side of the gallery, the white wall stood in stark contrast to the large dark hued portraits that were lined up. Bang opposite, were simple sketches in black and white, and the third wall displayed about 63 vibrant mini frames. Needless to say, the hall was tastefully ar- ranged with many of the ‘doodlingpieces’ drawing a clus- ter of people perhaps for their simplicity. Looking pretty in a black tunic and leggings, Alkan- dari chatted amiably with Al Watan Daily. Pretty Green Bullet is the name of your exhibition, does that even mean anything? Alkandari: It actually came about when I was playing around with something animated and I used green wall plugs for the same. His popularity was instantaneous and success sure, ever since he first appeared in the pages of Detective Comics #27 (May, 1939), DC’s flagship anthology title. In all that time, Batman has always amazed, thrilled and, perhaps most importantly of all, inspired genera- tions of wide-eyed idealistic hearts and minds. For myself, this is what makes Batman so very special – his unmatched courage, relentless drive and consistent willingness to set aside his own desires and dreams to become a tour-de-force for good. A living embodiment of justice and righteousness. A beacon of hope, ma- terializing out from the shadows to wage war on crime and corruption in whatsoever form it may take. Perhaps, it is his self-sacrifice each night that allows him to overcome his deep personal fears and doubts, and this may be the most appealing element to his complex, enig- matic persona. A mortal man, who has become a symbol, an icon of what we may all aspire to ultimately achieve. Diligence personified! As a young boy, I wanted to be Batman when I grew up. And, even though that possibility and practicality was always far beyond my reach, the one thing I can do is write about him. HOW COOL BATMAN REALLY IS!
