Staged every Saturday in a theatre in Compton, a suburb of Los Angeles, the stage was made up to look like an old barn, thus continuing the traditions of the various live shows that were first heard on the radio airwaves three decades earlier. Although Nashville was fast establishing itself as the commercial home of country music, the West Coast had a vast, ready audi- ence for such a show. The area had first become the new home for the Dust Bowl migrants of the 1930s and, a few years later during the war years, a further influx was made up of workers seeking jobs in the munitions and defence plants. These were all people who loved country music and, consequently, a brand new country scene was born with its own sound, artists, clubs, re- cord labels, radio shows and, in due course, television programmes. 'Town Hall Party' was created with its own cast of regular performers and musicians, boasting a house that was virtually a 'who's who' of the West Coast scene comprising such as Joe Maphis, Merle Travis, Skeets McDonald, Johnny Bond and Tommy Duncan. Jay Stewart (who later hosted the TV quiz show 'Let's Make A Deal'), and Tex Ritter were the MCs. The weekly show presented an equally impressive guest list, attracted both by the show's tremendous popularity but also by the fact that fledgling televi- sion was becoming a vitally important media for exposing their talents to brand new audiences. The many guests to appear in- cluded Johnny Cash, Patsy Cline, Eddie Cochran, The Collins Kids, Freddie Hart, Wanda Jackson, George Jones, Merle Lindsay, Bob Luman, Carl Perkins, Jim Reeves, Marty Robbins, Hank Snow and Gene Vincent. With an audience numbering up to 2000, 'Town Hall Party' was first broadcasted live over local radio station KFI, but reached a greater audience when NBC syndicated the show on radio. The broadcast was extended to three hours when KTTV-TV televised the show. The show was so popular that, in 1958, Columbia Records issued the 'Town Hall Party' album featuring various cast members. Now 'Town Hall Party' is reborn on DVD. Launched in 2002, this continuing DVD series presents both individual artists' perfor- mances, compiled from different appearances on 'Town Hall Party', and complete cast shows selected from specific dates. Com- pletely remastered, and presented with full colour booklets, these releases fully captured the atmosphere, artistry and sounds of a bygone country music age.     BEAR FAMILY RECORDS TEL +49 (4748) 8216-16 • FAX +49 (4748) 8216-20 • E-MAIL [email protected] Town Hall Party Die 'Town Hall Party' gehörte Anfang 1952 zu den ersten Country Music Shows, die im amerikanischen Fernsehen ausgestrahlt wurden und lief dort bis zum Beginn des Jahres 1961. Sie kam jeden Samstag aus einem Theater in Compton, einem Vorort von Los Angeles. Die Bühne war hergerichtet wie eine alte Scheune – dies sollte dieselbe Stimmung vermitteln, die schon drei Jahr- zehnte zuvor bei den Live-Shows vorherrschte, die über den Hörfunk gesendet worden waren. Obwohl sich Nashville sehr schnell als das kommerzielle Zentrum der Country Music etabliert hatte, gab es auch an der ameri- kanischen Westküste ein gewaltiges Fan-Potential für eine Show wie diese. In dieser Region lebten seit den 30er Jahren viele Men- schen, die es aus der Dust Bowl dorthin verschlagen hatte – während des Zweiten Weltkriegs kamen zusätzlich viele Arbeiter hinzu, die Jobs in den Munitions- und Waffenfabriken suchten. Sie alle liebten Country Music, und folglich entwickelte sich eine völlig neue Szene mit einem eigenen Sound, neuen Künstlern, Clubs, Plattenlabels, Radio-Shows und natürlich auch passenden Fernsehprogrammen. Die 'Town Hall Party' wurde rund um einen hauseigenen Interpretenstamm entwickelt, der einem 'Who's Who' der Westküsten- Szene glich – mit Künstlern wie Joe Maphis, Merle Travis, Skeets McDonald, Johnny Bond und Tommy Duncan. Gastgeber waren Jay Stewart (er präsentierte später auch die TV-Quiz-Show 'Let's Make A Deal') und Tex Ritter. In die wöchentlich ausgestrahlte Show wurden stets auch hochkarätige Gäste eingeladen – und die kamen gern, denn die Show war ungemein populär und das permanent wichtiger werdende Fernsehen erwies sich als perfektes Medium, um sich als Künstler völlig neuen Zuschauerschichten vorstellen zu können.

INFORMATION We all know that the Grand Ole Opry wanted nothing to do with rock 'n' roll, while the Louisiana Hayride gave national expo- sure to Elvis Presley, Johnny Horton, and others. The Big 'D' Jamboree in Dallas started with Texas country music but embraced the new music, giving an all-important break to Carl Perkins, Gene Vincent, and many, many more. In a nearly two-decade run that began in the aftermath of World War II, the Saturday night extravaganza packed the Spor- tatorium, a metal wrestling arena in a seedy neighborhood south of downtown. Broadcast locally on KRLD and nationally on CBS radio, the Jamboree was an exuberant cross-section of the most vibrant coun- try and rock 'n' roll music of the time, showcasing everyone from talented but largely forgotten singers such as Riley Crabtree, Orville Couch and Helen Hall to national figures, including Johnny Cash, Sonny James, Hank Locklin, Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, Wanda Jackson and Gene Vincent.

Neal The 2015 top-ten country songs analyzed in this study are characterized by the various formats of their song form, harmonies, and lyrics. This thesis presents a comprehensive study of the structure and narratives in sixty-seven songs that summarizes the distinctive features within those domains of contemporary commercial country music. A detailed description of the norm along with identifiable trends emerges. The song form that features most prominently in this repertory includes a verse-chorus-bridge form with three iterations of the chorus, an intro and outro section, and instrumental sections immediately following each chorus. The top-ten country songs have varying degrees of departure from this typical model. Primary features of the harmonies of these top songs include the frequent use of a double-tonic complex, the absence of a 5-1 authentic cadence, the same chord progression throughout the verse, chorus, and bridge, and the use of only two chords throughout the song. Lyrical analyses show that 2015 songs are continuing the traditional themes about romantic attraction, love, heartache, good times and partying, home, family, nostalgia, religion, and inspiration, within the context of small-town country life that this genre has used for years.

    Discography of the Camay Label [1963] The Camay label was started by Don Ames and Hal Weiss in 1961. The label was based in New York City in the Brill Building at 1721 Broadway. Camay issued singles in 1961, 1962 and 1963 and seemed to disappear prior to 1964. In 1963, the label focused on issuing budget albums. I believe the entire LP output was issued that year, most if not all of the material was leased from other labels and not recorded directly by Camay. In spite of being a budget label, they did produce a few good albums. The first release was a compilation of country music that included two rare sides by Bill Haley. Perhaps the best album on the label was “12 Collectors Goodies” CA 3012, with great pictures of vintage sports cars on the cover. This record contains some of the finest doo-wop put to vinyl and some very rare songs, Lynn McCutcheon in his book “Collecting Doo-Wop Compilations” calls this one of the 25 best doo-wop compilations ever produced. “12 Million Record Sellers” CA 3010 is also an excellent compilation, although it contains more commonly available material. The first Camay label was red with black printing. “CAMAY” above the center hole. The second Camay label was silver with black printing. “camay” on a record overlapping a globe above the center hole. C•4 ‘Writer’s Corner’ Editor’s note: This was originally written by Hogan in 1993. They call it the “Grand Ole Opry.” That’s what former newspaper reporter George D. Hay, its inventor, named it not long after the first group of performers had stood before their open mikes that first Saturday night and had their down•home music and vaudeville•comic routines beamed out over Nashville’s WSM•650 “clear•channel” radio to nearly all of America, way back in 1925. Nineteen hundred and twenty five. The year Nashville’s venerable Grand Ole Opry was born. It’s hardly missed a heartbeat since. Almost since its first moments, the Grand Ole Opry has been Mecca to the millions who’ve, over the years, come to Nashville to savor the finest in “country” music. It was not till a few short years ago, through, that I became one of those “savorers.” For a long time, I hated “country music” (which, as I’m sure you know, has been called “hillbilly music” much of its life and mine). Could barely stand to think of it, much less listen to it. Well, to make what could easily be a longer story shorter, Susan and I’d often talked about getting a couple of tickets and driving the 80 miles to Nashville some Saturday night to experience this “Grand Ole Opry” thing in person. See if it was all that our mind’s eye image had it cracked up to be.
