My grandmother also had a small garden in her yard and on the top of her roof. She grew vegetables, such as red peppers, green onions and lettuces. Today, I buy a variety of vegetables from supermarkets, including imported food from all over the world. The initial research question asks the reason why my grandmother and I consume food differently. Ackoff (2004) who is the pioneer of systems thinking mentions that, “The systems movement has been critiqued as failed, solipsistic or unrealistic (Ackoff, 2004, Collopy, 2009, Jones, 2009), leading some to call for integrating systems thinking with practical methods of design practice” (Jones 2014) For this reason, systemic thinkers blend system thinking with design think- ing considering design thinking as a practical method. They expect a feasible application through design thinking to make the real action in the world. To illustrate the progress of combination of systems theory and design thinking, Jones (2014) draws four types of design generations from the 1960s to the 2000s. Table 1 shows in details. It could also be the title for the climate change scenario that we are facing today. The changes that we expected to see are here. The last decade was the hottest on record, thanks to global warming, according to experts at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). At the University of the District of Columbia, a land-grant university, our primary focus is on addressing the very critical questions related to urban agriculture. If you set aside the jokes about it, one thing is for sure: “Mother nature always bats last.” Her batting average is very good these days. My first personal edification and interaction with the change in climate occurred in the 90s. While running a very small, certified organic farm in Jessup, Maryland, I noticed that the early spring rains were extremely excessive. Scientists agree that the earth is getting warmer, and every year is warmer than the previous year. Also, if you are a very “in-tune” farmer, you have probably noticed that the frost-free growing season is getting a little longer. Two of the most important tools in the urban and peri-urban farmer’s arsenal are “imagination” and “the art of being flexible.” Farmers must be prepared to change crop varieties, crop planting dates, and irrigation schedules, immersing themselves more in pest and disease management, and whatever other factors may affect urban agriculture as the planet warms.

Adding green spaces to a neighborhood, including community gardens and urban farms, is known to provide a number of social, health, economic and environmental benefits. Unfortunately, most studies have neglected to analyze the potential contributions of urban agriculture to improvement of ecological sustainability in cities. This study used a multi-pronged approach to examine the environmental benefits of urban agriculture on unused, vacant real estate or rooftops as compared to the alternative of leaving the land or space in its current state.
