The Chicago native had a brilliant sophomore season, averaging 16.6 points, 4.3 rebounds and Ranked Big Ten Opponents (Neutral) 1 W 3.3 assists to earn first-team All-Big Ten honors by the media. Most importantly he was a closer, draining a Non-Conference (Home) 5 W number of clutch shots in the closing seconds of six Illini victories during league play. After weighing heavily Non-Conference (Road) 1 L his professional options, Dosunmu created a stir when he elected to return for his junior year. He now finds Non-Conference (Neutral) 5 L himself on seemingly every award watch list and All-America team, recognized as one of the faces of college basketball this season. • Many of Dosunmu’s assists last season were to the man in the middle, Kofi Cockburn. The Kingston, Jamaica product had a record-breaking season in the paint for a rookie, culminating in Big Ten Freshman of the Year honors. Cockburn averaged 13.3 points, 8.8 rebounds and 1.4 blocks and tallied 12 double-doubles, doubling the previous mark by an Illini freshman. He also set freshman single-game and season rebounding records for the program. The 7-foot, 285-pound center considered turning pro as well before announcing his return for a sophomore campaign. • The Illini return five players in all from last year’s 8-man rotation. And while Dosunmu and Cockburn garner most of the headlines, the contributions from upperclassmen Trent Frazier, Da’Monte Williams and Giorgi

6 // 2020-21 Illinois Fighting Illini Basketball Bezhanishvili have been equally important in the team’s success. • Frazier is a three-year starter who enters his senior season at No. 41 on the school’s career scoring list (1,119 points) and ninth in career 3-pointers (192). He averaged 9.1 points last year and proved even more valuable at the other end of the floor, earning a reputation as one of the top perimeter defenders in the Big Ten. • Williams has also been a mainstay in the Illini lineup over the last three years. He started 22 games last season, averaging 2.8 points and 3.6 rebounds. Williams’ value goes well beyond the stat sheet, and the senior’s biggest assets are his strength and ability to defend any position from guard to power forward. • Bezhanishvili started 24 games last year, averaging 6.8 points and 4.8 rebounds. The junior excels in the post, showcasing a variety of moves with his back to the basket. He also plays the four when the Illini coaches employ a bigger lineup. Bezhanishvili is an adept passer, often finding Cockburn inside for scoring opportunities. • Two players are now available after practicing with the team last year while sitting out games due to transfer rules. Junior Jacob Grandison is a versatile 6-6 player who can play on the wing or at the four. He led Holy Cross in scoring (13.9 ppg) and 3-pointers while ranking second on the Crusaders in rebounding (5.0 rpg) two seasons ago. • Fellow junior Austin Hutcherson is a 6-6 guard who was a dynamic scorer at Division III Wesleyan in Connecticut, averaging 20.0 points while shooting nearly 40 percent from 3-point land in 2019. • Rounding out the Illini returners are sophomore Jermaine Hamlin, who played in 16 games last year and provides depth at center, and redshirt-freshman Benjamin Bosmans-Verdonk, a forward who appeared in nine games before missing the remainder of the season with a foot injury.

Highly Touted Recruiting Class Joining the Mix • Illinois welcomes a top-15 recruiting class this season in top-50 guards Andre Curbelo and Adam Miller, three-star forward Coleman Hawkins and center Brandon Lieb. • Curbelo is a prototypical point guard who has a knack for passing and creating opportunities off the dribble for himself and his teammates. He averaged 16.7 points, 8.1 assists, 7.6 rebounds and 3.6 steals as a senior at Long Island Lutheran. A native of Puerto Rico, Curbelo also has FIBA U19 and U17 World Cup experience. • Miller is the reigning Illinois Mr. Basketball, becoming the 13th recipient of the award to play for the Illini. He is a scoring guard with deep range and a prolific 3-point stroke. He averaged 27.4 points, 6.3 rebounds, 5.6 assists, and 2.3 steals as a senior at Chicago’s Morgan Park. Miller was also named two-time Illinois Gatorade Player of the Year. • Hawkins is another player on the roster whose strength is his versatility. Despite standing 6-10, he has the passing ability of a guard and is a face-up player who can stretch the defense with his 3-point shooting. Hawkins played at one of the nation’s top programs, Prolific Prep in California, where he averaged 12.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and team-high 6.5 assists as a senior. • Lieb was a late addition to the class, signing with the Illini during the summer after originally planning to attend prep school. The 7-foot center averaged 13.5 points, 9.3 rebounds and 2.5 blocks as a senior at Deerfield. He is a skilled player with intriguing potential as he continues to develop strength and gain weight.
