LEGENDRE: I guess I would agree that floor and vault are my better events, but I would like to develop into more of an all-around gymnast and also keep those events strong, if not MEDIA CLIPS | RELEASE NO. 10MEN’S GYMNASTICS stronger, than what they are now. I just want to build up my other events.

(Laughs) If I could stay on pommel horse, that would help. That is my worst event, by far. I don’t mind pommel horse, I’m just not very good at it. I think I’m improving and, eventually, I’ll come around.

INSIDE: What do you think of Oklahoma’s potential this season?

LEGENDRE: I think our team potential is exactly what it was last year. We have the opportunity to win another national championship. We have a ton of talented guys this year. I think, personally, we’re working harder than we [did] last year. I think that at this point we’re better than we were last year. As long as we keep a good mindset, and keep improv- ing, we’ll do [great].

[2008 seniors] Jon and Taqiy (Abdullah-Simmons)—they’re definitely a loss. Not only as far as gymnastics, but their leadership and their ability to motivate people. But I think we have good replacements in [2009 co-captains] Jake (Messina) and Chris (Brooks).

I think a lot of people will be pretty surprised at how some guys have developed this year. How much better they are. I hope I’m better—I think I’ll be pretty good this year—but I’m really talking about Chris. Chris is going to surprise a lot of people this year with how good he is.

INSIDE: And you’re going to be debuting a new 16.8 Start Value floor routine?

LEGENDRE: Yeah, the new floor routine is going along pretty good. … I’m doing six passes, which is a lot, I know. For me, the most impressive pass, the one that’s hardest for me, is the 1-1/2 to [front] double full. But the passes that impress most people are the Hypolito, a laidout Arabian double front—it’s piked in the Code, but I don’t really pike—or the laidout double-double.

… The time limit is pretty tight, so that’s a work in progress. Usually I’m right on the bubble with it. One good thing is that the NCAA doesn’t have a time limit, so that’s a good break for me, to work out the kinks.

It’s definitely tough to get it all in, but I think I just need to build up my endurance, and my ability, and then I think I’ll be able to move through faster. I’m just getting everything solidified, and trying to get everything to where I want to be.

It’s a pretty good routine. I think it’s probably good enough to compete for medals, internationally. It’s just a matter of me getting consistent and cleaner. That’s what I’m reaching for now.

OU Dialy Maybe the gymnastics team will win an unprecedented ninth championship in April to give OU its first national title By Jono Greco of 2009. 12-24-08 Overall, the athletic program is flourishing and this past year Sooner fans should enjoy has to be one of its best in school history.

current OU athletic success So here’s a toast to us being spoiled. Let’s hope we can hold our glasses high to this kind of treatment for many years to come. Everyone at OU is spoiled in one way or another.

We get to come to this beautiful campus everyday and take in the many traditions the university has to offer, albeit with a small fee.

There are many people who see flaws in the university, but there are worse places you could get your college education.

But the area we have been spoiled in the most in recent years is sports.

Just look at our athletic program. This season the football team went to the national championship game and quarterback Sam Bradford won the Heisman Trophy. The women’s and men’s basketball teams are ranked No. 2 and No. 3, respectively, in the nation and feature two of the most dominating players in their respective sports.

The baseball team is the No. 16 team in the country after spending much of the 2008 season outside the top 25. APRIL 16-18, 2009 | MEN’S GYMNASTICS MEDIA CLIPS APRIL 16-18, At the baseball team’s media day Feb. 11, head coach Sunny Golloway joked that the team needs to pick up the slack in the rankings because its ranking is low compared to other OU sports.

“If you’re ranked 16th down in Norman at the University of Oklahoma, then you’re kind of way behind,” Golloway said. “The fact is we got to bring up that tail end a little bit better.”

If a coach is cracking jokes about the recent athletic depart- ment’s success, then you know, as students, we are in sports heaven.

Arguably the most successful sport on campus is one that the student body may be the most uninformed about — men’s gymnastics.

I bet there are only a handful of the 35,000-plus students on campus able to tell me what the men’s gymnastics team is currently ranked or how many national championships it has won without looking up the answers on the Internet.

Even though football, basketball, baseball and softball produce professional athletes, gymnastics is the sport which has given the school worldwide recognition.

The team has two athletes, senior Chris Brooks and sopho- more Steven Legendre, who recently made the U.S. national team. The program put out an Olympic silver and bronze medalist last year, Jonathan Horton, and is led by one of the best coaches in the business, Mark Williams.

Since Williams took over as head coach in 2001, the Sooners have won every conference championship, excluding 2004. Senior co-captain Jacob Messina said he feels slightly pres- sured about this weekend since he has won the conference championship every year he has been at OU.

“I want to live up to it and go out on top,” Messina said. “I’d hate to go out with a loss. No one wants to do that.”

This weekend, the Sooners will be looking to focus on their performances rather than the scoreboard.

“Our first two events are going to be low-scoring events compared to what the other two teams are going to be starting on,” Brooks said. “So staying away from looking at the scoreboard [will be our toughest challenge] because when you look up, we’re going to be behind after the two events. We can’t let that get to our head.

The pommel horse is normally OU’s lowest-scoring event, however, the Sooners went six-for-six in the event at their last meet, and five-for-six the previous meet.
