Jamal Igle : Molly Danger Book 1 before purchasing it in order to gage whether or not it would be worth my time, and all praised Molly Danger Book 1:

BalaJamal Igle's MOLLY DANGER, on the surface, seems like a bright, cheery All Ages superhero . Except he's layered in some dark flourishes. At least POWER PACK's Katie Power and the RUNAWAYS' Molly Hayes can lean on a semblance of a strong family structure. Here's 10-year-old Molly Danger, the world's strongest, most invulnerable girl, sometimes styled as the "Princess of Finesse" (although, odds are, there's ironic intent in that nickname as Molly tends to inadvertently cause tons of money in city property damage). For the last twenty years she's defended the town of Coopersville, New York (population: 3 million) from the constant predations of the cybernetically-enhanced Supermechs. And, yep, the math is kinda screwy.Molly looks to be eternally young. She's actually closer to 30 years old. Molly's an extraterrestrial. Her government handlers are leery of her and don't allow her personal contact with her fans or even with those within her support system, them agents of D.A.R.T. (Danger's Action Response Team). For the past twenty years, Molly Danger has been the loneliest girl in the world. So, yeah, a sense of melancholy permeates the narrative.Molly meets her first friend in years (in maybe ever) when D.A.R.T. recruits former cop Austin Briggs. Briggs is one of them hot dog types and he promptly disobeys D.A.R.T.'s policy of non-interaction with Molly. Maybe it's got something to do with Briggs' inability to connect with his own stepson. Maybe he's just a naturally kind dude. Maybe he's aware that his stepson is a huuuuge Molly Danger fan. From jump Molly and Briggs' friendship shapes the heart of the story. And every now and then Molly Danger gets to kick supervillainy butt. For all the crap things that've come out of social media technology, you gots to give it props for the advent of the Kickstarter campaign. Now there's some hope for those with massive creative juices but super-shallow pockets. Jamal Igle's MOLLY DANGER is one creator-owned project I would've jumped on if only I'd known about it before. For those not familiar with the man, Jamal Igle is a comic book veteran whose artwork has graced the pages of , Noble Causes, the / mini-series, and of L'armée Des Anges. He's probably most recognized for his two-year stint in the title. Here, he writes and pencils.Igle's Kickstarter campaign sought a funding goal of $45,000 and delivered over $50,000 - so, yay! If things work out, if folks are generous, Igle plans to ship four installments on a bi-annual schedule. Book One is 48 pages long and comes in that European Graphic Album format, meaning that it's hardcover and sizes up at 9 1/4" x 12 1/4."I'm down with this project. I enjoyed reading about the behind-the-scenes stuff with Igle's determination to release material that is All Ages friendly and is appropriate for his young daughter. I mentioned that there's a sense of melancholy running thru the story, but there's also a big sense of fun and wonderment. I mean, a 10-year-old girl taking out a giant rampaging robot! Nuff said. For those looking for it, there's a nostalgic kick in that it's somewhat reminiscent of Astro Boy or even of Big Guy Rusty the Boy Robot. Themes of loneliness and shadowy agencies and sleek mechanical devices run rampant. From having seen his stuff in Supergirl, I knew Igle could draw. His artwork here is classically clean and evokes Jerry Ordway at his best. I love that his characters are so expressive. I really like the concept designs, from Molly's costume (her jacket is awesome!) to how he visualizes the Supermechs. Juan Castro provides the inks. No fair excluding him.Molly looks 10 years old but is closer to 30 years in real time age. I don't know if Igle intended for that odd note of Molly's arrested development, but it's intriguing. It's gradually evident that much is being kept from Molly but that, also, Molly is keeping her own share of secrets. Book One is more of an introductory chapter. Igle is keeping the big reveals close to his vest. But he's already hooked me in on the strength of sympathetic characters, of strong character beats, of Silver Age superhero action, and, again, because it's a lonely little girl beating up on an evil giant robot. Isn't that practically one of the Seven Basic Plotlines? No? Well, Molly's jacket is way d0pe. I kinda want one.6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Okay, When's Book 2 Coming Out?By James N. SmithThis is what comic's used to be about. Good stories, characters you care about, and heroes being heroes. I really enjoyed this book, and I can't recommend it highly enough. The artwork is a joy, and the writing is tight. This story moves, and I was sad to come to the last page. With all the comic book properties being turned into films these days, Molly Danger looks like it was made for the screen, and I mean that in a good way, it's well paced and in a few pages we get more characterization of several main figures than many books manage to supply in a year.Hopefully it will do well enough to continue with book 2. This is another example of crowdfunding really paying off and we're all the richer for it. My only question is, how long can the creators sustain this level of craftsmanship?0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Five StarsBy BabetteGood read.

She's the hero you've been waiting for! Eternally child-like and inhumanly strong, Molly Danger has protected the citizens of the once sleepy town of Coopersville, New York for the past 20 years from the terror of the sinister Supermechs.
