This is the 64th edition of the tournament. Overall, 11 of the Top 30 are in the field. In 2014, Nishikori broke an 11- year streak of Spaniards winning the title. There are two former champions in Barcelona: two-time reigning champ Nishikori and eight-time winner Nadal. Ferrer finished as runner-up in 2008, 2009, 2011 and 2012, losing to Nadal in all four finals. There have been 11 all-Spanish finals in the Open Era, including seven of the last 11 years (all involving Nadal). DAY 1 PREVIEW: Four first-round singles matches comprise Monday’s lineup on Pista Central, beginning with two-time Quito champion Victor Estrella Burgos against Mikhail Kukushkin. Following that match, Croatian qualifier Franko Skugor challenges Spain’s Iñigo Cervantes, whose comeback from elbow and hip injuries led him to his first ATP World Tour semi-final at São Paulo earlier this season. In the third match on Pista Central, 2013 finalist Nicolas Almagro brings a 25-12 tournament record into his meeting with Teymuraz Gabashvili. The final match of the day pits a pair of Germans as qualifier Jan-Lennard Struff faces 18-year-old Alexander Zverev. RAFA ON CLOUD NINE: Nine-time Roland Garros champion Rafael Nadal added a ninth ATP Masters 1000 Monte-Carlo title on April 17. He returns to his native Spain this week and is bidding for his ninth Barcelona title. Nadal is 43-3 lifetime at the Barcelona Open BancSabadell, highlighted by a 41-match win streak from 2005 to 2014. His countryman, Nicolas Almagro, ended Nadal’s unbeaten run in the 2014 quarter-finals. Nadal avenged that loss in his opening match last year before falling to Fabio Fognini in the third round. NISHIKORI SEEKS THREE-PEAT: World No. 6 and two-time reigning champion Kei Nishikori makes his sixth straight appearance in Barcelona and owns a 15-3 tournament record. In 2014, Nishikori entered the Barcelona Open BancSabadell ranked No. 17. He dropped only one set en route to his first clay-court title, then lost just one set again in 2015 to repeat as champion. Nishikori is 19-6 this season, highlighted by his fourth straight Memphis title. In his last tournament, the 26- year-old finished as runner-up to World No. 1 Novak Djokovic at ATP Masters 1000 Miami. NEXT GENERATION: There are four Next Generation players in the main draw -- rising stars who were born after December 31, 1994 and are ranked in the Top 200 of the Emirates ATP Rankings: Next Generation Ranking Age Alexander Zverev No. 51 (Career-High) 18 (19th birthday is April 20) Hyeon Chung No. 71 19 Elias Ymer No. 123 (Career-High) 20 Karen Khachanov No. 138 19 SPANISH ARMADA: There are 13 Spaniards in the draw, including four seeds: No. 1 Rafael Nadal, No. 3 David Ferrer, No. 5 Roberto Bautista Agut and No. 7 Feliciano Lopez. Ferrer, a four-time finalist, is making his 14th straight appearance. Bautista Agut reached the quarter-finals last year and Lopez, who made his debut in 1998, is playing the tournament for the 16th time. The conference had a tennis-specific set up as well as innovative tennis medicine content with keynote presentations, break out sessions, and on-court sessions. Thanks to Connor Sport Court, there were 2 court surfaces that were laid down inside the Life University gymnasium for very real on court demonstrations. Some of the participants (and even speakers) found some time to even play out some points and warm up with the foam balls and rackets provided! This conference was also supported by Ortho Atlanta, a local orthopae- dic group that serves as the official medical providers for the Atlanta ATP Championships as well as the Australian Open Wildcard tournament. The International Tennis Performance Association (ITPA), was an- other key contributor, and they also helped to arrange an on court stroke technique evaluation for coaches in conjunction with Georgia Professional Tennis Association (GPTA), and STMS one day prior to the main STMS-USTA conference. Dr. Ben Kibler, Dr. Mark Kovacs, and myself provided an enthusiastic audience of many local tennis professionals, coaches, and some medical providers some specific modifications of strokes for junior elite players as well as adult players.
