A fishing boat sinks in the English Channel in the middle of the night, and the evidence points to murder. Ex-MI5 operative Dominic Elder comes out of retirement to help investigate the explosion of the boat, as it appears that his long-time obsession, a female assassin known as Bleeding Hearts, may be responsible. Using the boat to get to England from France, Witch left a subtle trail of clues to announce her arrival and to warn off Elder. But that is the least of Special Branch's worries, if Elder's well-honed intuition is correct. He has seen her work before and knows her to be a resourceful enemy, who always seems a step ahead of the authorities. With an imminent summit of world leaders to be held in London, Witch's target seems obvious. Young The Jack Harvey Novels: Witch Hunt Barclay's thoroughness leads him onto Witch's trail, Blood Hunt the Blood Hunt of his liaison in the French police, Dominique Herault. Blood Hunt - Wikipedia Oh, the blessings of being Bleeding Hearts author with too much time on his hands. I can just picture Ian Rankin sitting in the house farm? As in the Rebus novels, Rankin particularly excels in the creation of his male characters; they are three-dimensional and, all in their own ways, flawed and profoundly human e. Things really shift into high gear with the second Jack Harvey novel. After a few jobs have gone anything but smoothly or so rumor has ithe needs a good, clean hit to restore his reputation. So while Bleeding Hearts he would leave the place of his hit as quickly and silently as possible, The Jack Harvey Novels: Witch Hunt he has to retrace the job to its origins, find out who was behind it and who wants him out of the way. It was only after a few hits that I decided anyone was fair game. He just makes sure the instruments are humane. But this is all just as well. Further, we learn that Reeve had a brother; a journalist on the trail of a story centering around a chemical company headquartered in San Diego. So just in case, Mr. And yes, I think I also spotted the occasional Rebus in-joke — well, some of them at least. You are commenting using your WordPress. You are commenting using your Google account. Scottish Fiction Suggestions for senior pupils Titles included in this list are either written by a Scottish author, an author residing in Scotland, a novel set in Scotland or a novel which is part of a series of which one book is set in Scotland. ATKINSON, Kate One Good Turn Kate Atkinson creates a series of bizarre characters, all involved with murder--either planning it, committing it, or trying to avoid it. Many seemingly unrelated characters, involved in several seemingly unrelated plot lines, make their appearance in the first fifty pages. During the four days in which the novel takes place, however, these characters and plots start to overlap and eventually come together, until, at the end, the reader is smiling with pleasure at the brilliant plotting and ironic twists of fate. ATKINSON, Kate When Will There Be Good News? In rural Devon, six-year-old Joanna Mason witnesses an appalling crime. Thirty years later the man convicted of the crime is released from prison. In Edinburgh, sixteen-year-old Reggie works as a nanny for a G.P. But Dr Hunter has gone missing and Reggie seems to be the only person who is worried. Across town, Detective Chief Inspector Louise Monroe is also looking for a missing person, unaware that hurtling towards her is an old friend -- Jackson Brodie -- himself on a journey that becomes fatally interrupted BANKS, Iain The Bridge The man who wakes up in the extraordinary world of a bridge has amnesia, and his doctor doesn't seem to want to cure him. Does it matter? Exploring the bridge occupies most of his days.

FREE REBUS: THE EARLY YEARS: KNOTS & CROSSES, HIDE & SEEK, TOOTH & NAIL PDF Ian Rankin | 608 pages | 18 May 2000 | Orion Publishing Co | 9780752837994 | English | London, United Kingdom Rebus: The Early Years (Knots & Crosses / Hide & Seek / Tooth & Nail) for sale online Sign up for LibraryThing to find out whether you'll like this book. I suggest reading Rankin's forward: "Exiles on Prince Street," to learn what he thought of this particular novel. It also felt like Rebus was overthinking this murder. I did find Rebus' belief that photographs could steal souls intriguing. He handles it with his natural aplomb, not suffering fools, whether cops or civilians. He also gets to catch up his daughter, Sammy, and meets her boyfriend, Kenny, who Rebus instinctively knows is trouble. I love how Rankin depicts Rebus as strong and solid but allows us to see his vulnerability with his falling for Lisa. Wonderful quick reads. Rebus is annoyingly boring and for a cop, especially one with SAS training, he seems to flounder helplessly in all aspects of police work. The most minor of character were by Rebus: The Early Years: Knots & Crosses the most interesting. All is not lost though. While Rankin does write in a style that was a bit unusual for this American reader, it is slightly charming and educational. He takes the reader on an interesting tour of Edinburgh, not afraid of showing the ugly along with the beauty of that very impressive city. For that some of the above complaints are forgiven. Rankin gives so little tangibility Rebus: The Early Years: Knots & Crosses Rebus.
