Inside Prep Sports

Detroit, MI.- After two-year’s in high school this class isn’t as deep as 2013 but has similarities to Michigan’s 2012 class. The shooting guards and power forwards is where the depth is as of now while there are some centers emerging. Drake Harris, Kenny Carpenter, Mory Diane, Justin Tillman, Dequandre Dentmond, Anthony Wartley-Fritz, Marq’wyell Jackson, and Jamal Poplar head this list.**** Those players were tops a year ago. Since then DaRohn Scott, Devin Booker, Jaylen Johnson, Joe Powell, Darryl Davis have jumped up to top 10 status. Watch for a couple of long and tall power forwards, Jordan Williams and Luke Meyer.

Center  6’8” DaRohn Scott (Grand Rapids Christian) MM+ He has nice size and athleticism but often thinks about what he’s going to do when he gets the ball in the post rather know what he’s going to do. He has a decent motor and is a solid rebounder. Scott also plays football. DaRohn Scott’s house number is 616-889-8174 and his cell is 616-822-8251. ***Meanstreets-Wilburn 16u***  6’8” Yante Maten (Bloomfield Hills Lahser) MM+ He’s athletic with quick bounce, length, and runs the floor well. He’s a good athlete who needs experience and in time he has a shot at a scholarship. Frederick is also a strong student. Frederick’s contact number is 313-505-5286. Douglass’ head coach is Nkwane “Juan” Young 313-926-0875.***REACH Legends 16u***  6’6” Max Recknagel (Saline) MM He moves well and has good touch around the basket and good feet. Chandler Park Academy’s head coach is Derrick “Pete” Walton, sr. 313-850-7154. ***Michigan Hurricanes 16u***  6’8” Clyde Ayers (Detroit Chandler Park Academy) MM Ayers is a big kid who could lose some pounds. Consortium varsity team. He has since transferred. Chandler Park Academy’s head coach is

Derrick “Pete” Walton, sr. 313-850-7154. Clyde’s contact number is 313-870-8308. 1

Leaning more towards football. Theron, sr’s cell is 248-697-6571. ***Ann Arbor Magic 16u***  6’7” Frank DeVos (L’anse Creuse) MM DeVos is a solid post player with very good hands, frame and a good athlete. He does a good job of getting up the floor and rebounded well against opponents his size. He knows how to get position and has some skill. His go to move was catching the ball on the right , pivoting, one power dribble to the front of the rim, and shoot over his right shoulder. Played hard and put in minutes. Potential: While he’s not a skinny kid now, he’ll get stronger and if he grows a couple of inches then he could be a very good mid-major player. Mid-Major Plus might be there, too.  6’6” Jason Hugan (Milford) MM Hugan is a solid athlete who has a knack for blocking shots. Developing his offensive game and obviously growing a few inches will secure a scholarship offer in the next couple of years. Cass Tech’s head coach is Dave Dixon 313-399-9530. ***Michigan Mustangs-Barrett 16u***  6’4” Jordan VanDort (Zeeland West) Low D1

Power Forward  6’8” Jaylen Johnson (Ypsilanti) HM He’s thin and played JV as a freshman and has bounce and moves ok. He’s more of a long athlete on the court rather than a basketball player at this point. His basketball skill is something Ypsilanti head coach, Steve Brooks, looks forward to developing. ***After his sophomore year he has shown that he can consistently make mid-range shots, highly active, blocks shots, rebounds, has toughness, plays above the rim, and is comfortable handling the ball in the open court. He has a solid basketball IQ. His high school coach is Steve Brooks 734- 664-8217. ***Dorian’s Pride 17u***  6’7” Justin Tillman (Detroit Pershing) MM+ The kid has a great no-nonsense demeanor and carries focus onto the court. He has more skill than the center position he often plays in high school and AAU but he does what his team needs. He’s long with bounce, timing, a motor, and great touch around the basket. If this kid grows to 6’9” he’ll become a top 75 player at least. ***He has to work on developing his offensive game and enrolled at Pershing in the winter of 2012. He was at Detroit Consortium prior to that and at Ypsilanti Willow Run as a freshman. Pershing’s head coach is AW Canada 313-995-6821. Tillman’s dad is John Tillman 313-467- 4945. Justin’s contact number is 313-970-9560. ***REACH Legends 17 and 6u***  6’8” combo forward Jamal Poplar (Romulus) MM+ His motor on the court this season was so up and down while playing to the level of his competition it makes me wonder if his true potential 2 will meet production. Poplar can be as good as he wants to be as he has a solid skill set and can

score from 19’ and in. His dad is 6’10” and his mom is 5’11” and by the time this report is written Page

he might have grown an inch. He moves well and has a great wingspan but he need to get stronger and take care of his school work. Jamal Poplar, sr.’s cell number is 734-340-7534 and Jamal, jr’s cell is 734-340-7639. Romulus’ head coach is Nate Oats 734-516-8651. ***Michigan Mustangs-Mayfield 16u***  6’7” Dequandre Dentmond (Lansing Catholic) MM+ The lefty has the frame, skill, and production but has needs to realize his talent if he wants to be the top player in Michigan’s 2014 class. He has a world of upside as he can put the ball on the floor a little and will make mid-range jumpers players his age and size don’t. Darren Zwick is the head coach at Lansing Catholic 517- 712-5762. Dre’s cell is 517-582-6440 and his mom is Carroll 517-784-9008. His AAU coach is Chris Cagle, sr. 248-670-2574. ***Shot Doc Elite 16u***  6’7” Anthony Wartley-Fritz (Taylor Truman) MM+ He’s a proto-typical mid-major power forward as he has great natural size and is a solid athlete who can step out to hit perimeter shots and mid-range jumpers. He’s also get a great feel in the post who scores with his back to the basket but will also find the open player when the defense rotates over for the double team. ***He sustained a knee injury this past high school season but won’t have to undergo full surgery and he should return in July. “Ant”s cell is 313-989-7520. Truman’s head coach is Chuck Suttles 313- 917-6071. His AAU coach is Rockey Black 734-334-6972. ***Michigan Warriors 16u***  6’5” Charles Key (Detroit Cass Tech) MM+ He has a lot of bounce and does a great job of rebounding outside his area. He has length and a solid touch around the basket. Developing his guard skills so that he becomes a small forward as well as growing a few inches will make him a high major prospect. Charles contact is 313-712-0786. Cass Tech’s head coach is Dave Dixon 313-399-9530. ***Michigan Mustangs 16u***  6’9 Luke Meyer (Addison) MM+ He moves well and is a very good athlete who has length and blocks shots. He’s a face up four who needs to get stronger and gets moved out of position from time to time when rebounding. He’s very intriguing and in another year could be a high major prospect. Chris Cagle is his AAU coach 248-670-2574. ***Shot Doc Elite 16u***  6’6” Darryl Bigham (Detroit Southeastern) MM He moved back to Detroit after spending a handful of years in N. Carolina as his family has re-relocated. Bigham has good size and is a very strong rebounder. He has a knack for rebounding and is a physical player. He’s a decent athlete who has a decent drop step but needs to work on a face up game. The kid plays hard and his high school coach George Ward speaks of him highly on and off the court. Ward’s cell number is 313-399-1472.  6’7” Jermaine King (Ferndale) MM He’s a good athlete with length and he gets up and down the floor very well. Best in transition. Needs to learn the game in half court settings. ***Dorian’s Pride 16u***  6’5” Deman Muex (Harper Woods Chandler Park Academy) MM He’s a player I need to see more of but he’s athletic, scores in the mid-range and on hustle plays. Chandler Park’s head coach is Derrick “Pete” Walton 313-850-7154. ***Hurricanes 16u***  6’5” Luke Diekevers (Jenison) MM Luke has nice size and if he can find a few more inches to get to 6’7” he’ll more than likely find a division one scholarship. He’s a decent athlete who is also physical in the paint. He passes well, has great hands, and moves well. His home number is 616- 457-4617 and his dad is Tom Diekevers 616-340-1724. ***Grand Rapids Storm-16u***  6’5” Isaac Bowles (Detroit Cesar Chavez Academy) MM He has nice size and his skill set has improved over the past year. Bowles is a decent athlete. ***Detroit Spartans 16u***  6’6” Andrew Meacham (Northville) MM The best shooter in this group of power forwards as he has had multiple games this spring where he’s hit three or more shots from the perimeter. He moves well and has a nice frame that will swell to 200+ pounds in the next two years. ***The Family 16u***  6’6” small forward Tyrone Acuff (Detroit King) Low MM Acuff has decent size and is strong when he goes to the basket or pulling up for a mid-range jumper. He’s a good athlete who has some dog in him. ***Does he want to play basketball?***  6’3” Justin Kearney (Ferndale) Low M He’s much more a forward than his guard oriented brother, Brandan. He has a bit of a mean streak to him and is decent player from 15’ and in. He

3 needs to get stronger and improve his quickness. ***Superfriends 16u*** Page

 6’4” Jerell Mayweather (Home School) Low M An undersized shot blocker with athleticism, timing, and length. He’s raw offensively but has a good motor. ***FIST 16u***  6’5” Charles Davis (Harper Woods Chandler Park Academy) Low M I’ve heard through the grape vine that he will concentrate on football.  6’4” Josh Hardiman (Detroit ?) Low M  6’4” Sam Konockle (Kalamazoo Central) Low M  6’3” Colin Jones (Holt) Low M  6’4” Charles Tucker (Detroit Cass Tech) Low M

Small Forward/Wing  6’7” small forward Joseph Powell (Saginaw) MM+ Powell is lanky and has a solid skill set and over the offensive minded spring scored from the perimeter and in. Saginaw’s head coach is Julian Taylor 989-484-6895. ***Dorian’s Pride 17u and 16u***  6’6” wing Aaron Smith-Foster (Taylor Truman) MM+ Aaron is a spot on shooter who shoots it with confidence from the perimeter or stepping in after a pump-fake for a 17’ jumper. He gets nice extension and lift on his jumper. He’s a decent athlete who moves well. Aaron’s house number is 313-930-2537 and his mom is Jackie. The Warriors’ program director is Rockey Black and his cell is 734-334-6972. Chuck Suttles is his high school head coach 313-917-6071. ***Michigan Warriors 16u***  6’3” wing Kaylin Johnson (Flint Northern) MM Johnson has very good size and is a strong finisher and athlete. He has range but not consistency from the perimeter. Flint Northern assistant Marcellus Miller 810-955-6867. ***Detroit Spartans 16u***  6’5” small forward Levar Walker-Scott (Ypsilanti) Low MM A great athlete who has quick bounce and is a monster in the open court where he beats defenders to spots and scores easily. His biggest problem is something he can’t control, small hands. His high school coach is Steve Brooks 734-664-8217. ***FIST 16u***  6’4” small forward Malik Dawson (Detroit Consortium) Low MM Dawson has nice natural size and is a decent athlete who has developed his guard skills immensely over the past couple years. Al Anderson is the head coach at Consortium 313-283-4729. ***Detroit Stars 16u***  6’4” wing Richard Gold (Detroit Loyola) Low MM Gold has nice size and like Dawson (mentioned above) has developed his guard skills over the last couple of years. He needs to use his size to his advantage against smaller defenders and on the glass. Rocky Buscemi is his high school coach 586-322-6293. ***The Family 16u***  6’3” wing Jerry Smith (Saginaw) Low MM Smith is a strong kid who more than likely is done growing. He does a great job of attacking the basket and is physically superior to the 15u opponents. Improving his guard skills as well as perimeter and mid-range game will decide if he’s a division 1 player. Saginaw’s head coach is Julian Taylor 989-484-6895. ***Dorian’s Pride 16u***  6’2” small forward Evan Forshay (Ann Arbor Gabriel Richard) Low M Forshay has a nice motor and is somewhat undersized for his position and I’m not sure how much more he’ll grow. Nkwane “Juan” Young is his high school coach 313-926-0875.

***REACH Legends 16u***

He’s skinny and a good athlete who will probably grow a couple of more inches. He’s a pass first point guard but can also make shots from the perimeter and mid-range. He’s more of a half court guy than a player who smokes defenders off the bounce to get to the basket. His high school coach is Steve Brooks, 734-664-8217. ***Dorian’s Pride 16u***  6’ point guard Tyler Johnson (Howell) Low MM Johnson is a high energy guard who has improved a lot over the last few months. Shooting Guard Page

 6’3” Devin Booker (Moved to Moss Point, MS. After spending his freshman year at Grandville) HM He shoots the ball well and has great form. He’s a decent athlete who is comfortable with the ball in his hand and one day could play the 1-3. The chances that he grows to a minimum of 6’6” is likely as his dad is 6’8” and Devin looks like an 11-year old. He is one player that I can see moving up to high major potential sooner than later. His dad says even though he moved to Mississippi he will return in the summer to play with the Grand Rapids Storm. Melvin Booker is his dad 228-238-5555. ***He’s obviously moved up to the High Major level in the last year.***Alabama Challenge 16u***  6’4” Drake Harris (Grand Rapids Christian) HM Harris is athletic, can get to the basket, and shoots it well from the mid-range while improving from the perimeter. Juan Rickman is his high school coach 313-282-6488. ***Detroit Stars 17u***  6’3” Kenny Carpenter (Detroit Cass Tech) MM+ Carpenter is long and gangly so growing to 6’6” is in the cards. He shoots the ball well and has a high motor. He handles the ball well and gets to the basket from either side of the court. He needs to get stronger but that doesn’t detour him from rebounding or sacrificing himself for the play. Nate Oats is his high school coach 734-516-8651. ***The Family 16u***  6’3” Maceo Baston, jr. (Detroit Country Day) MM+ If he reaches the height of his 6’8” dad then it’s a wrap as he has the shooting skills that his dad didn’t. His athleticism is still a year away as he looks like a five-year old and is long and thin. ***Baston has developed leaps and bounds over the last 8-months. He scores going to the basket with floaters from the left and right side of the basket while consistently making mid-range jumpers. He knows what his bread and butter is and will go to the well again and again. He transferred to Country Day in January after spending a year and a half at Troy High School with . Warren De La Salle’s head coach is Greg Esler 586-899-5421. ***Dorian’s Pride 16u***  6’2” Mory Diane, jr. (Detroit Country Day) MM Diane is a polished guard but his strength on the high school level was that of a shooter where he had solid scoring games and multiple three- point games. Mory Diane, sr’s cell is 248-854-7131. Country Day’s head coach is Kurt Keener 248-514-8051. ***The Family 16u***  6’2” Chris Clyburn (Romulus) MM He’s a clone of his late blooming brother Will Clyburn (Iowa State).
