Proposals for new biosphere reserves and extensions to biosphere reserves that are already part of the World Network of Biosphere Reserves (WNBR) were considered at the last meeting of the International Advisory Committee for Biosphere Reserves (IACBR), which met at UNESCO Headquarters from 2 to 5 February 2015. 2. The members of the Advisory Committee examined 26 proposals for new biosphere reserve (with 2 transboundary sites and 8 re-submissions of proposals for new biosphere reserve) and formulated their recommendations regarding specific sites in line with the recommendation categories as follows: • Nominations recommended for approval: the proposed site is recommended for approval as a biosphere reserve; no additional information is needed. -

Witkowski i ABSTRACT In this study I investigated the reproductive biology and pollination ecology of Aloe peglerae, an endangered endemic succulent species of the Magaliesberg Mountain Range in South Africa. The aim was to determine the pollination system of A. peglerae, the effects of flowering plant density on plant reproduction and the suitable microhabitat conditions for this species. Aloe peglerae possesses floral traits that typically conform to the bird-pollination syndrome. Pollinator exclusion experiments showed that reproduction is enhanced by opportunistic avian nectar-feeders, mainly the Cape Rock-Thrush (Monticola rupestris) and the Dark- capped Bulbul (Pycnonotus tricolor). Insect pollinators did not contribute significantly to reproductive output. Small-mammals were observed visiting flowers at night, however, the importance of these visitors as pollinators was not quantified in this study. Interannual variation in flowering patterns dictated annual flowering plant densities in the population. The first flowering season represented a typical mass flowering event resulting in high seed production, followed by a second low flowering year of low seed production. -

Accepted 10 April, 2007 The species Hoodia (Apocynaceae) and Opuntia (prickly pear) (Cactaceae) are highly efficient in water use and belong to the Crassulacean Acid Metabolism (CAM) group of plants. These plant species are quite abundant in Botswana especially in the Kalahari Desert, prickly pear being the most dominant even though they have received very little commercial attention in the country. Elsewhere in the world, prickly pear has multiple uses such as their utilisation in the pharmaceutical industry, as a source of food and drink for animals in the rural communities, and are important in the weaving and clothing industry. Other important uses of the species are manufacturing of paper, making of toothpicks, needles, pins and for numerous essential products. Recently the world has been introduced to Hoodia gordonii or curorri that works as a natural appetite suppressant. This paper reviews the potential uses of Opuntia and Hoodia spp, identifies the important species used by communities in Botswana and recommends protocols and instruments for research, cultivation, and commercialization of these species in the country. Biodiversity and Perspectives of Traditional Knowledge in South Africa
WIPO SEMINAR ON INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY AND DEVELOPMENT 1 GENEVA: 2 -3 MAY 2005 BIODIVERSITY AND PERSPECTIVES OF TRADITIONAL KNOWLEDGE IN SOUTH AFRICA ABSTRACT The San peoples, known as marginalised“first peoples” indigenous to Africa, have over the past five years rapidly discovered the meaning of the words biodiversity and tradi tional knowledge, whilst being drawn in to the hitherto arcane and irrelevant world of intellectual property and international trade. This paper briefly traverses the case of the patenting of an extract of the Hoodia Gordonii, one of the many plant produc ts used for medicinal purposes (as an appetite suppressant) by the San, and the subsequent developments in the San world as well as on a national policy level. Some issues arising during the case such as the requirement of prior informed consent, the furt her articulation of the San’s collective legal rights, benefit sharing and intellectual property issues relative to traditional knowledge of indigenous peoples, are discussed. 1 THE SAN PEOPLES The San peoples of Southern Africa are the acknowledged “F irst Peoples” of Africa, widely touted as the holders of the oldest genes known to man. Their numbers are now reduced to approximately 100 000 in Botswana, Namibia and Angola and South Africa 1, where they generally inhabit hostile environments, live close to nature, and survive in poverty on the fringes of the emerging African societies. It is relevant to the story of the San’s involvement in the current debate on biodiversity, traditional knowledge and intellectual property that they formed their own net working organisation in 1996, in order to better connect with the growing indigenous peoples movement and the UN Decade on Indigenous Peoples. -

The International Aloe Science Council Presents an Aloe Scientific Primer International Aloe Science Council Commonly Traded Aloe Species The plant Aloe spp. has long been utilized in a variety of ways throughout history, which has been well documented elsewhere and need not be recounted in detail here, particularly as the purpose of this document is to discuss current and commonly traded aloe species. Aloe, in its various species, can presently and in the recent past be found in use as a decorative element in homes and gardens, in the creation of pharmaceuticals, in wound care products such as burn ointment, sunburn protectant and similar applications, in cosmetics, and as a food, dietary supplements and other health and nutrition related items. Recently, various species of the plant have even been used to weave into clothing and in mattresses. Those species of Aloe commonly used in commerce today can be divided into three primary categories: those used primarily in the production of crude drugs, those used primarily for decorative purposes, and those used in health, nutritional and related products. For reference purposes, this paper will outline the primary species and their uses, but will focus on the species most widely used in commerce for health, nutritional, cosmetic and supplement products, such as aloe vera. Components of aloe vera currently used in commerce The Aloe plant, and in particular aloe vera, has three distinct raw material components that are processed and found in manufactured goods: leaf juice; inner leaf juice; and aloe latex. A great deal of confusion regarding the terminology of this botanical and its components has been identified, mostly because of a lack of clear definitions, marketing, and other factors. -

Growth, flowering, seed production, mortality and recruitment were recorded. A. peglerae was found to be slow growing, with irregular flowering and seed set. Mortality and recruitment were both low.
