POSITIVE REASONS FOR BELIEVING THAT THE BIBLE IS THE WORD OF GOD. MY Lecture tonight1 is constructive. In it I aim at setting forth reasons of a purely positive nature for the belief that the Bible is the word of God. The Bible, to us Protestants, is scarcely a word of doubtful denotation. We mean by it all the Books of the Old and of the New Testaments, exclusive of Apocryphal Books, whether Old or New. It is worth observing that the whole of Christendom accepts theN ew Testament Canon as denoting the same identical Books from Matthew to Revelation. I do not deny that it took some time for the whole of Christendom to come to a unani mous finding as to what were all the Books that went to form the NewTestamentCanon,albeit that for the major part of the New Testament there always was unanimity. But as the outcome of much thought and many investigations, all Christendom Syriac, Coptic, Greek, Roman, Protestant-came in the end to mean by the term New Testament one and the same Books. That unanimity seems to me very impressive. To the Old Testament the non-Protestant Churches add certain Books known as the Old Testament Apocrypha. I am inclined to think that this condition of things, in respect of the non-Protestant Churches, arose out of the fact that, within the period that the Scriptures of the Jews were being rendered out of Hebrew into the Greek of the Septuagint, certain Hebrew Books that were not regarded as canonical in Palestine were in Egypt rendered into Greek. -

Life and Work of Robert Dick Wilson
TMSJ 19/1 (Spring 2008) 91-106 LIFE AND WORK OF ROBERT DICK WILSON Brian Nicks* At a time when his denomination and seminary were turning away from conservative, orthodox views of the Bible, Robert Dick Wilson felt called to challenge respected scholars in their Higher Criticism of Scripture. As a child and young man, he showed remarkable academic abilities, particularly in learning new languages. He attended Western Theological Seminary in Pittsburgh, and while a student there, he learned and taught a number of languages. He demonstrated effectiveness as a preacher and evangelist, but chose to become a teacher because of his linguistic abilities. After studying Semitic languages in Europe for a time, he returned to join the faculty at Western Theological Seminary. In 1900, he left Western to become a professor at Princeton Theological Seminary, a role that he held until 1929 when he left to help in founding Westminster Theological Seminary. He authored a number of articles and books related to the twenty-six languages and dialects he had learned. His writings were particularly noted for their effectiveness in answering higher critical attacks on the authenticity of the OT, particularly the Book of Daniel. He died on October 11, 1930. * * * * * INTRODUCTION The historicity, authenticity, and authority of the Bible are under attack on every front these days. Fiction works distort the truth of Christianity, denying the historicity of the Bible. Christian fiction is replacing theology on the bookshelves of churchgoers. Books that rip Scriptures from their historical and biblical contexts are being elevated to pseudo-scripture status. Self-help books with an amazing number of biblical references are being sold to help people find their purpose in life. -

The Archaeologist ’s Spade and the Apologist’s Stacked Deck: The Near East through Conser vative Christian Bibliolatr y Daniel Martin Varisco I want to suggest to you, in the first place, that you should be very suspicious of all archaeologists who tell you that they have proved conclusively the truth in Holy Scripture. ( Re v. A. C. Headlam 1931:123). The hermeneutics are so variable, and the preju - dices so strong that, in these archaeological con - troversies, all the fallacies known to logicians have flourished luxuriantly. (Cobern 1891:312) In 1956 a popular book of essays was published by the noted Sumerologist, Samuel Noah Kramer; it was called History Begins at Sumer. About that time I was introduced to Sunday School in a local Baptist Church in northern Ohio, where it was definitely taught that history was begotten with a literal Adam and Eve around 4004 B.C., give or take a divine day. That church no longer exists. I went on to major in “Biblical Archaeology” at the conservative evangelical Wheaton College in Illinois and then further afield for a degree in anthropology at the Un i versity of Pe n n s y l vania, the institution where Kramer spent most of his life deciphering Sumerian tablets. As the two boys stood outside the office door, Xiao Wang called “Professor Ho!” Re- cognizing his voice, Professor Ho replied brightly, “Hey! Xiao Wang, come in!” Xiao Wang and Xiao Li entered with the confidence of established acquaintance to find Professor Ho sitting as usual behind the now familiar clutter of books on his oversized desk. He didn‟t bother rising, and the boys took their accustomed seats without waiting to be asked. Xiao Wang spoke first. “I sent the whole week checking out the things you said last time about the age of the earth and the fossil record. [See chapter 3.] I agree that there really is nothing like an evolutionary succession among the fos- sils, despite what my textbooks claimed. And I agree that there is far more evidence for a „young‟ earth than for an „old‟ one. To use your metaphor, I‟ve broken out of the prison house. I can‟t be an atheist anymore. Atheism doesn‟t make any sense! There has to be a creator. “Every morning this week when I‟ve gotten up and looked out the window, it‟s been like seeing a whole new world! The trees, the birds, the people: I see now that they were designed—created, I should say. And it‟s so much brighter, so much more beautiful! To think that someone is standing behind it all, that he prepared it all. It changes everything!” Xiao Wang‟s eyes were shining and he was smiling without knowing it. -
