It argues that an exploration of sitcoms reveals the mindset of postwar Britons and highlights how television developed both as an industry and as a public institution. This research demonstrates how Britain metamorphosed in this period from a welfare state with an implicit promise to establish a meritocratic and expert-based society, into a multiracial, consumer society ruled by the market. It illustrates how this turnabout of British society was formulated, debated, and shaped in British sitcoms. This dissertation argues that both democratization (resulting from the expansion of the franchise after World War I) and decolonization in the post-World War II era, established culture as a prominent political space in which interaction and interconnection between state and society took place. Therefore, this work focuses on culture and on previously less noticed parties to the negotiation over power in society such as, media institutions, media practitioners, and their audiences. -

The Age of Television Innovative TV and Radio Formats
1950s The age of television In 1950 there were 12 million radio-only licences and only 350,000 combined radio and TV licences. The budget for BBC Television was a fraction of the Radio budget. But a single event transformed the popularity of television. This was the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II on June 2, 1953 in Westminster Abbey. Permission had never been given before for television cameras in the Abbey. Some even felt it was wrong for people to watch such a solemn occasion while drinking tea in their front rooms. An estimated 20 million TV viewers saw the young Queen crowned, most of them outside their own homes. This was a turning point and the first time that a television audience exceeded the size of a radio audience. So today The Queen will ascend the steps of her throne… in the sight today of a great multitude of people. Richard Dimbleby, Coronation commentary By 1954 there were well over three million combined sound and vision licences. The television age had arrived and in 1955 the Queen broadcast her Christmas Message on television for the first time. The mid-Fifties introduced some major TV names of the future, including David Attenborough (Zoo Quest 1954), Eamonn Andrews (This Is Your Life 1955) and Jack Warner (Dixon of Dock Green 1955). Drama successes such as The Quatermass Experiment and the controversial adaptation of Nineteen Eighty Four became talking points all over the country. In September 1955 the BBC’s broadcasting monopoly came to an end when ITV was launched. The impact of competition had an instant impact on BBC Television and its share of the audience fell as low as 28% in 1957. -

U.S. Archives of . Updated December 13, 2018 Dick Baker, USA Archivist Quality Legend A – excellent B – good C – acceptable D – poor I – incomplete—music edited out Version Notes Beginning with the Fifth Series in 1954, Goon Show studio sessions were recorded simultaneously by the Light Programme and Transcription Service departments. At LP the show’s producer edited the recording for airplay a few days later (this version is abbreviated Orig here, so as not to be confused with commercial LP disc releases). At TS, a staff producer edited the recording for overseas use (TSO here, but the O is for original), shortening the shows up to two minutes (generally excising topical comments that might confuse and wog jokes that might offend). Then, in the 1960s, TS mounted an extensive reissue series (TSR here) called “Pick of the Goons” for overseas radio stations. This is the series that has been played on many NPR stations in the U.S., although confusion was caused when TS sent 20 shows from the TSO series to NPR labeled “Pick of the Goons” using numbers that would later be reused for their TS Reissue series. The TSR shows evidently were reedits of the original recordings, since in many cases lines are present that had been cut from the original TS release. In general, though, TS again was on the lookout for topical comments and wog jokes. In recent years, demon audio engineer Ted Kendall has done near-perfect restorations of many shows, pulling together all extant sources to produce recordings that are sometimes even more complete than the original UK broadcast. -
HANCOCK's HALF HOUR COLLECTIBLES Notes To
HANCOCK’S HALF HOUR COLLECTIBLES Notes to Accompany Volume 4 All photographs copyright (C) BBC The Tony Hancock Appreciation Society is delighted to have given its support to the production of this new and unique series concerning the lost work of Tony Hancock. Undated publicity shot of Tony Hancock. The Tony Hancock Appreciation Society The THAS was formed in 1976 just 8 years after Tony had died at the young age of 44. The Society was formed with the aim of promoting and preserving the work of Hancock and, whilst this remains the aim of the Society today, the environment in which the Society now operates is very different from that of 1976, with all surviving radio and TV episodes of Hancock’s Half Hour 1 now commercially available to purchase. If we turn the clock back to 1976, we find a very different scenario. At the time, the BBC outsourced commercial releases to mainstream record labels such as Pye Records for Hancock’s Half Hour and Parlophone for The Goon Show. It wasn’t until 1967 that BBC records were created with the purpose of undertaking commercial releases of BBC programmes. At the time of the formation of the THAS in 1976, just two relatively complete radio episodes were available on the This is Hancock Long Player (LP) record released in 1960 (The Wild Man of the Woods (4/16 27 January 1957) and A Sunday Afternoon at Home (5/14 22 April 1958)). In addition, extracts from four radio shows were available on the LP Pieces of Hancock released in 1960 and a further nine extracts were included on the BBC records 1973 release Unique Hancock. -

As a result, a second pilot was recorded, but now it was Hodges buying the pier, with young Pike as his business partner but only because he needed the loan from 'Uncle Arthur'. Lavender also recorded a special introduction for a newly recoloured episode of the series Room at the Bottom which was broadcast on 13th December Features Find your next read The first version, used in seasons one and two, simply showed footage of the main cast superimposed over a still photograph, with the crew credits rolling over a black background.
