Matt Main’s choice of hymn, this week, reminds us of where we can find shelter and hope when things don’t seem to being going well. The theme is echoed many times in the Bible. (Psalm 30:1-3, Psalm 62:1-2, Psalm 66:17-20, 1 Corinthians 1:9, Hebrews 6:19, James 1:17). Such was the effect of Orson Wells production of HG Wells “War of the Worlds”, demonstrating the power and influence radio could achieve.

In 1953, BBC radio started a serial “Journey into Space”. Over the years 4 Technology moved forwards in the1930’s, 1940’s and 1950’s & most series were produced, translated into 17 languages and broadcast homes acquired a “Wireless” - a valve radio with wonderful sounding worldwide. The first storyline, Operation Luna, set in the year 1965, tells of man’s first conquest of the Moon. “Captain Jet Morgan” (Andrew Faulds then later David Jacobs), “Doc Matthews” (Guy Kingsley Poynter) “Mitch Mitchell” (Bruce Beeby), “Lemmy” (David Kossoff, later Alfie Bass) blasted off in Rocket-ship “Luna” into adventures beyond belief. Little did they know that in 1969 Neil Armstrong would turn fiction into fact.

Before TV became a household “necessity”, the Wireless was the primary source of “Home Entertainment” and led families into a new fantasy land of , Travel, Adventure and Crime shows as well as News, Music and live Sport - all brought to your own front room.
