Sasha Berliner is a musician, , producer, and leader from San Francisco, CA. Sasha started playing drums at eight years old. She pursued a emphasis at her high school, Oakland School for , where she picked up the vibraphone at age 13. At 16, she wrote and published her first entitled “Gold” and was a member of the SF Jazz High School All Stars . She moved to New York in 2016 to attend the New School for Jazz and Contemporary . The Banff International Workshop in Jazz and Creative Music alumni has headlined at venues like the NYC Winter Jazz Festival, The Jazz Gallery, The Blue Note, Montreal Jazz Festival, and National Sawdust. She was the cover story for Tom Tom Magazine’s Fall 2018 publication, deemed one of SF Jazz's 10 Rising Female Instrumentalists for 2018, and has been featured by The SF Jazz Education Center, PBS News Hour, NPR, and The New York Times for both her musicianship and her activism. She is also the first US recipient of the LetterOne “Rising Stars” Jazz Award, where she headlined 10 reputable jazz festivals.throughout the U.S. and Canada. Sasha is currently finishing her Bachelor’s degree at The New School of Jazz and Contemporary Music, and her music work remains primarily based in New York City. In addition to performing internationally with her own project, Sasha Berliner Azalea, her recent notable performances have been with musicians such as drummer-composer Tyshawn Sorey, trumpet player Nicholas Payton, and jazz vibraphonist Warren Wolf, and drummer Quincy Davis. She is an endorsing artist for Vater, Sabian, and Marimba One, and is a faculty member at the MalletLab percussion intensive, where she gives masterclasses and clinics. In 2019, she was a nominee for best vibraphonist in the Downbeat Readers’ Poll and “Best New Artist” in the JazzTimes Reader Poll. Sasha Berliner is also the 2020 curator for the historic SWR NEWJazz Meeting in Southwest Germany. Sasha’s full length debut album, “Azalea”, is available for purchase on Bandcamp, iTunes, and Amazon, and for streaming on Spotify, Tidal, and Apple Music. It has since been nominated for JazzTimes 2019 Readers’ Poll’s “Best New Release”, and has been described by critics.as “shimmering and thoughtful” (Kassel, TIDAL), “gleefully exploring various genres and headspaces” (Tremblay, CTEBCM).
