FROM THE NATIONAL ALLIANCE FOR MUSICAL THEAtre’s PresideNT Welcome to our 24th Annual Festival of New Musicals! The Festival is one of the highlights of the NAMT year, bringing together 600+ industry professionals for two days of intense focus on new musical theatre works and the remarkably talented writing teams who create them. This year we are particularly excited not only about the quality, but also about the diversity—in theme, style, period, place and people—represented across the eight shows that were selected from over 150 submissions. We’re visiting 17th-century England and early 20th century New York. We’re spending some time in the world of fairy tales—but not in ways you ever have before. We’re visiting Indiana and Georgia and the world of reality TV. Regardless of setting or stage of development, every one of these shows brings something new—something thought-provoking, funny, poignant or uplifting—to the musical theatre field. This Festival is about helping these shows and writers find their futures. Beyond the Festival, NAMT is active year-round in supporting members in their efforts to develop new works. This year’s Songwriters Showcase features excerpts from just a few of the many shows under development (many with collaboration across multiple members!) to salute the amazing, extraordinarily dedicated, innovative work our members do. A final and heartfelt thank you: our sponsors and donors make this Festival, and all of NAMT’s work, possible. We tremendously appreciate your support! Many thanks, too, to the Festival Committee, NAMT staff and all of you, our audience.

Welcome UPCOMING Dear Friends, The 2007 Summer Season at the Globe is one of our most exciting and ambitious AVENUE Q yet. The centerpiece, of course, is the nationally-recognized Shakespeare Festival, now in Jun 30 - Aug 5, 2007 its fourth year with a repertory company. The Globe has been one of the country’s pre- miere producers of Shakespeare since the Theatre’s inception in 1935, and this year we Spreckels Theatre offer three of the Bard’s most important works: Hamlet, The Two Gentlemen of Verona and (Downtown) Measure for Measure. We are fortunate that our acclaimed director Darko Tresnjak, fresh from a major success in New York and London, continues as Festival Artistic Director. ❖❖❖ Noel Coward’s wickedly funny Hay Fever, directed by Robert Longbottom — one of today’s most sought-after directors — plays in the Old Globe Theatre, with the magical HAY FEVER comedy Bell, Book and Candle, directed by Tresnjak, in the Cassius Carter Centre Stage. This summer the Globe “campus” reaches beyond Balboa Park to downtown’s his- Jul 14 - Aug 19, 2007 toric Spreckels Theatre, where we’ll be producing the west coast premiere (becoming the Old Globe Theatre national tour) of the Tony Award-winning musical, Avenue Q. Still one of the biggest recent hits on Broadway, Avenue Q is a hilarious show that’s perfectly suited to summer ❖❖❖ in San Diego! We have much to look forward to as well — with the recently-announced 2007/08 BELL, BOOK AND winter schedule, highlighted by four world-premieres: A Catered Affair, starring and written by the legendary Harvey Fierstein, a new stage version of the popular MGM CANDLE movie musical The Band Wagon, Hershey Felder’s world premiere, Beethoven, As I Knew Aug 4 - Sep 9, 2007 Him, and In this Corner, a Globe commission about famed boxer Joe Louis.
