“December’s wintery breath is already clouding the pond, frosting the pane, obscuring summer’s memory.” ~ John Geddes, A Familiar Rain “April hath put a spirit of youth in everything.” ~ William Shakespeare ALL ABOUT APRIL April is the fourth month of the year in the Gregorian calendar and one of only four that are 30 days long. (Do you know the other three? June, September, and November) The name April comes from Aprilis, derived from aperire, meaning “to open.” It is the name the Romans gave the month, reportedly because it is the time of year when flowers begin to bud or open.

BIRTHSTONE – AQUAMARINE For centuries, the diamond has stood for romance, intrigue, power, greed, and magic. In the Middle Ages, it was used to cure headaches and to create love potions. Today, it symbolizes everlasting love. Besides being the birthstone of April, it is also the anniversary gemstone for 10 and 60 years of marriage.

The diamond is the world’s hardest naturally occurring substance. It is also the purest of all gemstones, since it is composed completely from crystallized carbon. Its name comes from the Greek word adamas, which means “unconquerable.”

On March 14th we had our first Fireside Chat in the Living room with many people attending. We will be doing this each month to keep residents informed. At the Chat we discussed the new mural that will be placed when competed in the Liberty Walk. The Mural has sharp objects and various sharp tools that will need to be used and we need running water therefore we will be using the recreation room for the mural construction. We will need to keep the recreation room locked during this time. Dining Services has agreed to let residents play cards in the main dining room. I am sorry for the inconvenience this causes but I do hope that all residents will get involved in making the mural. If you have any costume jewelry or china that you would like to be used in the mural, please drop it off to Erin. Recently volunteers from New Creation Lutheran and St. Francis Inn have come to join residents in the sandwich making activities held at Paul’s Run. Additionally, resident family members have also begun to be part of this outreach. As Julie so eloquently put it, “It is humbling to hear our resident, family, staff and community volunteer’s talk about how blessed they feel to have this opportunity to reach out to others.” Over the past several weeks our Community Service Club has done the following; • Prepared and served turkey, smashed, roasted and sweet potatoes, stuffing, peas, beets along with peach and apple cobbler to 100 people at Jane Addams Shelter. • Over 800 sandwiches and 600 cookie bags for New Creation Lutheran Church to distribute in North Philadelphia. • 285 lunchmeat sandwiches, 104 PB&J sandwiches, and 350 cookie bags for St Frances Inn to distribute in Kensington. Vice President-Executive Director CHAPLAIN’S CORNER Finding Peace in Your Decisions “Life is full of tough decisions, and nothing makes them easy……..Try, trust, try, and trust again, and eventually you’ll feel your mind change its focus to a new level of understanding.” -Martha Beck Providing spiritual support to families transitioning to and through long term care presents many opportunities to witness the struggle of decision making. Making difficult decisions and weathering life altering change create a significant amount of stress for the entire family. This is one of the reasons why the team at Paul’s Run works to make the transition as smooth as possible. As part of the team the chaplains are here to provide spiritual support and guide residents and family members. The Process of Discernment is a valuable tool for this new leg of the journey.. The truth is, some of us are better than others at making good decisions. Some of us make snap decisions. Some labor forever, weighing the pros and cons into the ground. Some take too many other people’s opinions and feelings into account. But there are some who know how to deliberate, discern and decide.. Decision making is something many of us struggle with regardless of where we are in life’s journey. Perhaps when faced with a decision it may be helpful to discern using these steps! • Identify the decision to be made or the issue to be resolved • Formulate the issue in a proposal • Pray for openness and freedom • Gather the necessary information • Discuss the matter with someone who supports your values • Reflect on the advantages and disadvantages of it • Trust in God and make your decision, even if you are not certain about it • Sit with the decision for a bit • Discern. Decide. Be at peace with your decision and allow others to do the same. As always, we are grateful for the blessing of being part of your journey and look forward to walking alongside you! Bless, The Chaplains

Humor and laughter have many therapeutic effects on the body. Laughing not only improves your mood and emotional state, but it has many social, mental, and physical health benefits as well. Some of the physical benefits of laughter are: improves cardiovascular health, lowers blood pressure, reduces pain, enhances immune system, decreases “stress” hormone, and muscle relaxation. Some of the mental benefits of laughter are: improves brain function, releases pent-up feelings of anger and frustration, reduces tension, lowers anxiety, and increases energy. Some of the social benefits of laughter are: enhances ability to connect with others, helps avoid loneliness, and improves relationships. So how can you add humor to your life and reap the health benefits? For starters, hang around people who make you laugh. Spend time with those who see the bright side of life. Put humor into your surroundings. Buy a calendar with funny jokes on it. Figure out what makes you laugh and then do it! GENERAL STORE HAPPENINGS RITA'S WATER ICE IS BACK IN THE GENERAL STORE! KEEPING THEIR MEMORY ALVE BY: MARGARET ATKINSON I probably mentioned previously that I belong to a National Organization consisting of women who are descended from men who fought in the Union Army during the American Civil War from 1861 to 1865. Our mission is to keep their memory alive and promote patriotism and charitable deeds toward our neighbors. Our local chapter is Anna M. Ross Auxiliary No. 1, named for a well- known Philadelphia nurse who served during that time. Since I have encountered physical problems, my fellow members have kindly been holding the meetings wherever I am residing so I can be informed of current organization decisions. Some years ago we had a very elderly member who was the daughter of one of these soldiers. In the period after the close of the war, many young women married veterans in their eighties knowing that they would receive a monthly pension from the government when they became widows. Such was the case with Gladys Keeley and she would relate some of the tales her father told her as a child. Many of these veterans fathered children when in their eighties. I thought you might be interested in some of the stories she told us when her daughter could bring her to a meeting. The following is from minutes of the Auxiliary. Anna M. Ross Auxiliary #1 of Philadelphia mourns the death of a member, Gladys Keeley, who departed this life on October 20, 2007. A member of the Auxiliary for well over 20 years, she was the daughter of Union Veteran Pvt. James Thompson, 106th Pennsylvania Volunteers. Many years ago, while Sister Gladys (we refer to members as sisters) was still living in her own home in Philadelphia, members of the Auxiliary held one of the monthly meetings at her residence. She spoke of remembering her father, James Thompson, periodically visiting a local school that had his portrait hanging in a hall. After she went to live with her son David in a suburb of the city, we kept in touch through our tri-annual newsletter. Gladys, a very alert and active lady until several days before her death, was proud of her membership as evidenced by a note she left requesting that her Membership Badge be pinned on her dress at her funeral. This was held at the Lansdale Presbyterian Church with internment in Feasterville, PA. Her father wrote a memoir of his experiences and they provide a fascinating glimpse into his life. Born in County Tyrone, Ireland, his family immigrated to Philadelphia and at the age of 19, he was working in his father’s grocery store when the war broke out. He enlisted in Co. H., 5th California Regiment, headed by Col. Edward D. Baker who came to Pennsylvania to find volunteers. After Col. Baker was killed at Balls Bluff, Virginia, the regiment became the 106th Pennsylvania and went on to participate in many major battles culminating in Gettysburg. At Gettysburg, Thompson received a battlefield promotion to Sergeant in recognition of his bravery in rushing out between the lines under heavy fire to rescue a badly wounded soldier. Shortly after, his commanding officer Capt. L.D.C. Tyler was ordered home to supervise the draft and wanted Sgt. Thompson to go with him, but as the order only called for a private, he went as a private. He and the Captain returned to the unit in time for the battle of Cold Harbor. Eventually he and the Captain were captured at Petersburg on June 22, 1864. He had the good fortune that he was paroled within two weeks in exchange for citizens of Fredericksburg captured by General Sheridan. The regiment continued to carry him as a private and he was mustered CONTINUED PAGE 13 KEEPING THEIR MEMORY ALIVE CONTINUED BY: MARGARET ATKINSON Thompson joined George G. Meade Post #1 G.A.R.(Grand Army of the Republic, a veteran’s group in 1880’s,) eventually serving as commander in 1892. He was also an active member of the 106th Regiment Association. In 1889, as President of the Association, he presided at the dedication ceremony of the 106th Monument located on the battlefield at Gettysburg. After the war he returned to the firm of Thompson Brothers Groceries and as a member of the firm, was on the Finance Committee of the Centennial Exposition held in Philadelphia in 1876. Marrying at a late age, he was 73 years old when his daughter Gladys was born. She had vivid memories of accompanying him to special events on Decoration Day (now Memorial Day). He died of pneumonia at 81.What a privilege it was for Auxiliary 1 members to have such a close link to a segment of our nation’s history. After each American conflict since the inception of our country, veteran’s organizations were formed such as The American Legion, Vietnam Veterans, etc. The men enjoyed continuing friendships forged during the war and assisting fellow veterans who were ill or incapacitated. After the American Civil War, soldiers in the north formed the Grand Army of the Republic (commonly known as the G.A R.). In the south the Sons of the Confederacy was born. Until recently no women were in any of the uniformed services unless they served disguised as men therefore all these groups were composed of males. The following is the story of Sarah Emma Edmonds, the only woman to become a member of the G.A.R The fifth daughter of a farmer in Canada who wanted a Son, he made her work on the farm as a man. He taught her to become a track shot, She was very unhappy with his abuse and on finding he was arranging a marriage for her, in 1859 she ran away to town. Afraid he could find her she disguised herself as a man named Franklin Thompson, taking a job as a travelling Bible salesman. Slavery in the U.S.deeply offended her leading her to enlist in the Union Army in Co F of the Second Michigan Infantry. As the soldiers did not live in barracks but individual pup tents she was able to maintain her disguise. Franklin Thompson participated in several battles, delivering military orders, as a stretcher bearer, nursing the wounded and was eventually sent to Washington as a hospital attendant. She then adopted eleven disguises to wear as a spy behind the Confederate Lines, including a black washer woman, white dry goods clerk, black male slave and Irish Peddler. Her career as a spy ended when she contracted malaria and had to desert rather than have her female identity discovered. This led the Army to give her a Bad Conduct Discharge. Returning to civilian life, she decided to live as a female named Sarah Emma Edmonds, marrying Linus Seelye, residing in Fort Scott, Kansas and bearing two sons, George and Frederick. She petitioned three times for a special Congressional bill to rescind her Bad Conduct Discharge. With the aid of her former comrades, she finally received an honorable discharge with a pension and was inducted into the Military Hall of Fame. Moving to LaPorte, Texas Sarah was accepted as a member of the local McClellan Post. She passed away on September 5, 1898 and was buried in their plot in Washington, Cemetery, the only woman to be afforded that honor. As has happened in many veteran organizations, their offspring have formed groups to keep alive their memories and traditions. I belong to the Auxiliary to the Sons of Union Veterans and after serving as their National President flew to Austin,Texas in CONTINUED PAGE 14 KEEPING THEIR MEMORY ALIVE CONTINUED BY: MARGARET ATKINSON December 1996 to institute a new Auxiliary. The members took me to the local cemetery to view her gravesite. Previously it was unheard of to have an Auxiliary honoring Union soldiers in the South, this was the first one. As our population has moved to different areas due to employment moves, etc.,families are dispersed throughout the nation. We currently have members in many southern areas as do the originally Southern based societies have chapters in the north Sara Emma Edmonds a.k. Franklin.Thompson went on to write her memoirs in addition to authoring books for children. Another example of a woman living in a restricted Victorian age who overcame obstacles to make a difference in her world.

A ROYAL FABLE BY: JACK BIRNBAUM The Black in a fairy tale signals evil but the genie of evil is a competition It springs not full grown but evolves through those feelings apropos of a situation So, it is in this fairy tale the dark prince as a youth was guided to full inheritance That his station did excuse participation in mans virtues as a choice not by chance it relieved him of an obligation of morality as well excused his not telling the truth He was unsaddled from having any empathy as befitting, a lord of industrial couth This dark lord of industry turned to government his brand to now impose, forsooth He burst into the fray with a fervor of popularism and a topping of sheer mendacity Said the current President wasn’t a born citizen, ineligible to serve in that capacity Deriding all, friend or foe, the dark prince assumed the role of a prince in waiting Declaring only, he could save the nation applying methods learned, doing his thing His thing began with Royal Proclamation, known as Presidential order, in the trade The immigration orders, reviewed in court and ruled Constitutionally, below grade Another thing, division, ordered by the prince, a media joust, now called into play Deriding news reports, fake, issuing alternative facts, using twitter, in having a say Restriction of black football players right to protest injustice, as being unpatriotic A violent racial protest was allowed so Constitutional enforcement seems episodic The prince it would seem, views the Constitution subject to his opinions, apostolic The divisive acts continued undoing all prior partisan acts, other than legislation The rule of the Prince was in fact in consistency to his habits and his inclination He had no empathy separating immigrant children and parents seeking sanctuary Showing no empathy or respect to a great war hero Sen. WORDS AND MESSAGES BY: JACK BIRNBAUM Of the many characteristics which enabled man to move forward in development None is more important than communication, language and words, however sent As man developed each area brought forward a language apropos of their culture Communication usage increased word vocabularies beyond being a word picture Word combinations fueled thoughts, concepts, or emotions, past, present or future A medium flexible, written, recited, sung in group, or combined with instruments At sites people gathered to learn or take pleasure in words, be it igloos, or in tents In time new structures, theaters and halls, housed both performers and an audience Spreading new forms of wordy pleasure while newer technology did it, enhance And a class of skilled performers, speakers, actors and singers, added to the arts Written words recorded history and spread learning into all of civilizations parts Words can, and have been used as a weapon, by nations and in the affairs of men At times in the hands of some, words have bred passion, violence and mayhem Twisting facts or with use of rumor have promoted war, and other inhuman orgies Such words, propaganda, have been fuel for belligerence over the many centuries Words of hate or derision should be viewed and treated with anxiety and suspicion Weighed against such words as in the Declaration of Independence, our tradition A spirit of brotherhood, of “we the people” in the stated prelude of the Constitution Should, as it was for the founding fathers, a guide be, for our democratic institution Fear not words of hate, it is our hands, through the vote, to control of our situation And continue to achieve those treasured unalienable rights, the legacy of our nation ON BEING HAPPY BY JACK BIRNBAUM When I awoke this morning, I felt happy, Why? because dummy, I was, still here Why I though, was I happy so I made a list with many a friend on it, I hold so dear I have friends who bring joy as they join with me each evening as we go to dinner I love hearing their stories, mostly true, sharing their hopes of staying a bit thinner Then there’s the mystery of what sort of surprise we will find opening up the menu First will be the soup and the question what new creamed dish will come into view Next we face the eternal quest of what part of the chicken to eat? maybe it’s a neck Then we face the pasta questions, is it butter or sauce, and finding by hut and peck And desert how do they not have my favorite ice cream flavor on nights I request it And the greatest mystery of them all, where they find a water melon without a pit I am happy that our entertainment is part of relieving unemployment of borsht folk Many of whom who have not worked jobs, since rural hotels died, that’s not a joke I like old songs, I also admire accordions but I miss hearing instruments as a violin While I like music of the mummers, an occasional string quartet could evoke a grin While the moving of chairs of a prior program keeps me fit and living independent Moving heavy program items that block, its only benefits training as an attendant

So, I believe I have put together some, but not all, that compose a happiness packet I concluded a happiness list as my ambulance arrived in it, my own straight jacket

WHAT OF THE STATE OF THE UNION BY JACK BIRNBAUM The state of the union speech delivered by the president under a thin veneer of Just Covering a molten core consisting in the main of power coveted as though, in lust He dangles symbols of virtue, of veterans of service glory, bone spurs are his story A Plea for life of mothers and babes yet, tearing apart kids from moms in migrancy He calls for unity, just follow my lead and do as I SAY, That’s the American way? He heeds no scientific evidence of global warming, his gut not attuned, in any way Otherwise he’s convinced a groundhog sans shadow six weeks early spring appears Assessment of opportunity, jobs more available by his data, beyond any his peers Unemployment at record levels certified through his data, verification not needed The Declaration not read, tradition not in vogue and the constitution not heeded Foreign affairs he proclaimed his presidency and North Korea averted nuclear war ISIS and the Taliban miraculously been defeated, troops not needed, coming home Iran a menace to Israel under control, our Saudi allies a valued rock in a hot zone So, there are, two versions of the state of the Union, the one, between Trumps ears A second a vision of division, pollical conflict with fake news, accusation and fear Investigation of conduct inappropriate, and political insensitivity to our traditions A lack of policy direction, a valid sense of priorities, national leadership of vision America is greater than an immigration policy, greater than any or all walls can be We the voters must take it back and return it again, as our beloved land of liberty JUSTICE AND SECURITY BY: JACK BIRNBAUM In 1776 ere the words of Independence were formed. the revolution war was begun But it was the spirit of these magnificent words, that was cause this war, to be won A course of Human events made clear a need to separate, and dissolve political ties Twas a message of self-evident truths and unalienable rights moved a nation to rise Endowed by Creator, Life, Liberty, and a Pursuit of Happiness from a government Deriving their just powers of those governed through measure of their consent These epic words have been guideposts to immigration policy since then And only recently since 2016 is immigration policy, central once again It seems this group of huddled masses is not one endowed by the creator Their plight of violence and oppression is not sufficient asylum, to offer A protective caravan label them a horde, miscreants of a s**t hole nation Not eligible for self-evident truths or unalienable rights from this station Or the dream that gave birth a nation dedicated to allow a second chance Do we abandon the principles of our Declaration, adopting such stance? History’s deal harshly those dividers by wall who, persecute with dogma Be it Ghetto walls or barbed wire, be it ethnic, racial, or religious, stigma Division stokes fear and suspicion, hides empathy, and a breeder of hate It is the antithesis of inclusion as in our Declaration the soul of our state Just and justice are the bulwark and marrow in our quest to gain security Perfection not, intelligence, persistence, are tools to mitigate a fallibility

THE OMNI MAN-A QUESTION BY: JACK BIRNBAUM In my life I have known or known of, many a man, but till now, never one like this Of course, sharing this event with so many, whilst he publicly blew himself a kiss He modestly claimed only he had the genius needed, to safely guide, a ship of state Next, Mr. Omni (an alias) said with a flourish he alone. less crew, would dare fate Promising amazingly simple plans to right Americas sinking ship to be great again This omniscient man, , prophesized greatness would happen when His untapped genius as President would make Ameirca a money-making machine He would as one omnipotent, renegotiate treaties into the return of jobs, a scheme Announced global warming a hoax, would resume with, jobs aplenty Reduce regulations, healthcare services to decrease deficit so, who needs empathy? A planned wall, Mexico to pay, stemming immigrants he called criminals, no gain Fleeing poverty and oppression, replacing them with Norwegians, merit, no pain Rebuffed by Mexico on the wall, Trump redid treaties with allies seeking a profit Becoming omnificent rearranging alliances with allies negotiate with foes a new fit Tariffs were without notice imposed on friend and foe impact of such are unknown An income tax cut supposed to drip down to almost everyone in every income zone This verse designed to place an election option of omni man, re effect versus intent The question for your vote is, are the actions of our omni impulse, or incompetent?
