Only one local case in COVID backlog QUEST Continued from page 1 most of the data in today’s upload – while it will have historical significance – will have little impact on the status of the pandemic today,” state officials said in the press release. While seven local cases were added on Aug. 31, only one of the backlogged cases were assigned to Taylor County. According to DOH-Taylor Public Information Officer Martine Young, the single backlogged case came as a “surprise” to her, as the local office was notified that it would not be receiving any new cases as a result of the data dump. “Unfortunately, we do not control the information that goes on the dashboard locally, so I do not know anything regarding this case. Any case older than 14 days was auto-reported and does not end up on the Taylor task list,” Young said. On Monday, Aug. 31, the Governor’s office was informed that nearly 75,000 tests, dating as far back as April, were to be entered into the DOH COVID-19 monitoring system. While the data, for the most part were over two weeks old – with some being almost five months old – the state incorporated information that would be useful and included the rest in the interest of transparency. Upon announcing the state’s severing of ties with Quest, Governor Ron DeSantis said, “The law requires all COVID-19 results to be reported to DOH in a timely manner. To drop this much unusable and stale data is irresponsible.” “I believe that Quest has abdicated their ability to perform a testing function in Florida that the people can be confident in. As such I am directing all executive agencies to sever their COVID-19 testing relationships with Quest effective immediately,” DeSantis continued. All individuals that tested positive were notified of their results. “Therefore, while significant, this unacceptable dump of test results is a data issue and does not impact the health of individuals or the spread of COVID-19 in Florida,” the state said. Without the backlog of Quest results, the state positivity rate for new cases on Aug. 3 was 5.9%. With the Quest results, the positivity rate increased by less than one percent to 6.8%. The backlogged Quest results revealed 3,870 positive tests results that were previously unaccounted for. […] It rises with a single stem to the height of 40 feet and supports at the top a large mass resembling an immense pineapple, from which project a number of three-sided stems three or four feet long with leaves like the low palmetto but much larger and without prickles. The vegetable substance from which the stems and leaves are supported has in its center a white brittle mucilaginous mass composed of the centre folds of the leaves forming it, which may be eaten raw and when boiled has a taste somewhat like parsnips.
