    Doug Oxsen Oral History Interviews, December 30, 2015 Title “Raising the Bar for OSU Athletics” Date December 30, 2015 Location Valley Library, Oregon State University. Summary Interview #2 begins with Oxsen's broader memories of his basketball career at Oregon State. These memories include the quality of play in the Pac-8 during Oxsen's years as a competitor, the knee injury that he suffered during his freshman year, and the contrasts that he has observed between the culture of basketball during that era with what evolved later on. A major topic of conversation is Oxsen's recollections of playing against Bill Walton's UCLA Bruins and Oregon State's upset of UCLA in 1975, a win that broke UCLA's 49-game conference winning streak. He likewise comments on his interactions with Bill Walton in later years, as well as other noteworthy players against whom he competed. The session then shifts its focus to Oxsen's life following his graduation from OSU. These reflections include a discussion of Oxsen's two years touring the world with the Athletes in Action Christian ministry; his brief stint playing professionally in England; and his private sector work with Universal Gym Equipment and the BikeE Corporation. The remainder of the interview is chiefly devoted to Oxsen's return to OSU and his activities as a fundraiser with the OSU Foundation. Specifically, Oxsen details his involvement with the Raising Reser project as well as the construction of the Basketball Practice Facility, the launch of the Everyday Champions program, and the revival of track and field as an intercollegiate sport at Oregon State.

    WINTER 2011 FARMERS TAKE ON HUNGER CALL OF THE WILD HIGH-FLYING ACTRESS OSU’S PROVEN PROVOST THE MAGAZINE OF THE OREGON STATE UNIVERSITY ALUMNI ASSOCIATION Senior moment Senior day ceremonies prior to the final home contest of the season were a singular experience for Courtney Wetzel, the only senior on OSU’s record-breaking women’s soccer team, which went to the NCAA Tournament for the second year in a row after several years of frustration. Wetzel was given a shirt emblazoned with “SOLO SENIOR” to wear before the Oct. 31 game. Then, when her teammates removed their warm-up jerseys, she saw that they were all wearing shirts bearing a photo of her in action. A touched and inspired Wetzel went on to tie her career best for points in a contest, with a goal and two assists as the Beavers defeated Arizona, 3-0. Summary Much of this interview is devoted to Ralph Coleman, Jr.'s memories of his father, Ralph Coleman. Coleman Jr. recounts his understanding of his father's upbringing in Canby and his attending Oregon Agricultural College, with particular focus paid to his pursuits as an athlete, including his standout performances in track and field. Likewise discussed are Coleman's association with the college's Osolito Club, his friendships with Spec Keene and Douglas McKay, and his acquaintance with Linus Pauling, with whom he lived for a period of time. From there, the session focuses more intently on the early years of Beaver baseball, including Ralph Coleman's development as a coach, the baseball program's material circumstances during its infancy, travel to away games, and the baseball facility. Coleman Jr. also recounts his memories of the 1952 OSC team that appeared in the College World Series and of a handful of notable baseball players that came through the Oregon State program in its first decades. Personalities within the OSC Athletic Department comprise another topic of interest, including Coleman Jr.'s recollections of Slats Gill, Lon Stiner and Paul Valenti. Smith Oct. 19, 2017 In August 2017, the Building and Place Names Evaluation Workgroup began the process of generating historical reports on four OSU campus buildings and their namesakes under consideration. These buildings/namesakes were Arnold Dining Center (Benjamin Lee Arnold), Avery Lodge (Joseph C. Avery), Benton Hall and Annex (Thomas Hart Benton), and Gill Coliseum (Amory T. “Slats” Gill). The purpose of these reports was to gather and analyze historical evidence to explore, reveal, and contextualize the lives and viewpoints of the namesakes, and the histories of the buildings. Research Team Dr. Stacey L. Smith (OSU history department) assembled a research team made up of scholars from OSU and the broader Oregon community and coordinated the research with the OSU Special Collections and Archives Research Center (SCARC). The research team scholars were chosen for their extensive professional credentials in history or related disciplines, their strong record of high quality research and publication, and their expertise on the eras in which the building namesakes lived or the controversies surrounding them. The research team included: Dr. Thomas Bahde (Arnold Dining Center): Thomas Bahde earned his Ph.D. in History from the University of Chicago, with an emphasis in the 19th-century United States and comparative slavery. He teaches in the Honors College at Oregon State University and is the author of The Life and Death of Gus Reed: A Story of Race and Justice in Illinois During the Civil War and Reconstruction (Ohio University Press, 2014).
