SERENA SIMPSON Production Sound Mixer Member IATSE 479 Serena Simpson is one of very few women Production Sound Mixers, still to this day. She takes great pride in her job and work ethic and has worked her way up through the business at an impressive clip. She got her start in the entertainment industry working in Commercial dialogue editing and Sound design. She then played a vital role in the start up of a successful Atlanta audiobook company. Her work in those Audio and Advertising related fields earned her two Telly Awards and an Audie before she transitioned to location Sound Mixing. Serena now does Commercials occasionally as Sound Mixer but now primarily works in Television and Features. She enjoys the different paces of the two formats and schedules and her versatility and experience allows her to adapt quickly to any logistical obstacles. Serena’s enthusiasm, calm and easy going personality and enjoyment of her work are always appreciated by Directors and Producers. When not on set, you can find Serena tending to her mini farm and family in Atlanta, Georgia. Usually it’s motivated by the opportunity to hold aloft a small gold-plated statue, but there are plenty memorable occasions where Hollywood’s elite pulled this trope off fantastically. Think Charlize Theron in Monster. Maybe Jim Carrey in Eternal Sunshine? Or Heath Ledger as Joker. These performances often come to dominate award season. Directors wrenching a truly transformative rendition out of their leads can be the difference between a potential big winner fading into obscurity, or being written into history. The class of 2019 appears particularly full of these turns. There might well be as much intrigue in figuring out which will be remembered, as in watching the performances themselves. ‘Unrecognisable as’ awards could go out to Margot Robbie as Elizabeth I in Mary Queen Of Scots; Melissa McCarthy in Can You Ever Forgive Me?; Nicole Kidman in Destroyer; Christian Bale as Dick Cheney in Vice. Others of course have been down this road before. Steve Carell has come a long, long way since Michael Scott and he looks tremendous in Beautiful Boy. And Matt Dillon, who we’ll see in The House That Jack Built, has always had a penchant for the slightly off-colour. There’s probably no one more off-colour than Lars von Trier. Yearbook of the Poznań Linguistic Meeting 6 (2020), pp. 159–181 DOI: 10.2478/yplm-2020-0009 To be sentimental, powerful, and Black: Affective agency in Viola Davis’s award speeches Agata Janicka Adam Mickiewicz University, Poznań [email protected] Abstract This article considers how the long-standing American cultural tradition of sentimen- tality and its affective power can be discursively utilized by contemporary Black women in the public contexts. Using the concept of sentimental political storytelling as discussed by Rebecca Wanzo, I analyze three award speeches given by Viola Davis – a popular and acclaimed African American actress whose speeches generate signifi- cant public and media attention. Framing Davis’s speeches within the Black feminist epistemology, I draw on the conventions of sentimental storytelling proposed by Wanzo to argue that Davis is an example of a Black woman skilfully using sentimen- tality to gain affective agency and mobilize sympathy from mainstream public while at the same time narrativizing African Americans’ lived experiences to have their hu- manity and their struggle recognized today. Given the continued prioritization of White female suffering in the American media over stories of Black women’s struggle, the ways in which Black women can discursively utilize sentimentality to gain affective agency and negotiate self-definition in interactional public contexts is of significant sociolinguistic interest.
