The Chrysalids
The Chrysalids Introduction to the Author John Wyndham was born in England, on July 10, 1903. When he was growing up, he went to a series of boarding schools because his parents were separated. He then attended an advanced co- educational school until he reached the age of eighteen. After he left school, Wyndham studied farming for a while, then "crammed" to write the examinations for Oxford University. Finally, in 1929, Wyndham picked up a copy of an American magazine called Amazing Stories, and became very interested in science fiction. Not long after that a series of stories under the name of John Beynon began to appear in Amazing Stories, and in another publication called Wonder Stories. He wrote English science fiction stories under the names "John Beynon Harris," "John Beynon," and "Lucas Parkes," as well as John Wyndham. By 1937, he was being called the best living British science fiction writer. Wyndham's work in science fiction is interesting in its emphasis. He does not generally concentrate on amusing the reader with strange inventions of technology from a bewildering future. The settings he employs for the future are logical, identifiable extensions of the world of today. His consuming interest lies in speculation about human nature and human behaviour. This would account for his attention to customs and moral codes displayed in the different societies in his books. Thus, time and again he points out the hypocrisy, bigotry and ignorance which are so often a part of our social life, and he stresses that changing conditions demand new ways, new customs and new codes of conduct. -
George Eliot (1819-1880)
GEORGE ELIOT (1819-1880) Chronology 1819 Mary Anne Evans born at at Arbury Farm in Warwickshire. Her father, Robert Evans, was an overseer at the Arbury Hall estate, and Eliot kept house for him after her mother died in 1836. Her father remarried and Mary Ann had a good relationship with her two stepbrothers, particularly with Isaac, who played marbles with her and took her fishing. 1824-35 At the age of five she was sent to a local boarding school while Isaac was sent to school in Coventry. She became sternly Christian after her strict religious schooling. 1836 Her mother died and her elder sister married the following year so Mary Ann became her father´s housekeeper and companion. She continue to learn languages and in her own words: "used to go about like an owl, to the great disgust of my brother". 1841 Her father moved to Coventry hoping her daughter would meet a potential husband there. Their next- door neighbour, Mrs Abijah Pears, was the sister of Charles Bray, an enthusiastic social reformer and freethinker. Eliot made friends with the members of the Bray family, and began reading such works as An Enquiry into the Origins of Christianity. Mary Ann soon informed her father that she had lost her faith in Church doctrine. She soon gave up her Evangelicism in favor of a non-sectarian spirituality based on a sense of common humanity. She refused to attend church with her father and began work on a translation from German of Life of Jesus, a rationalist reexamination of some Bible sections. -

What could be easier and simpler? The cinema fell upon its prey with immense rapacity, and to this moment largely subsists upon the body of its unfortunate victim. But the results are disastrous to both. The alliance is unnatural. Eye and brain are torn asunder ruthlessly as they try vainly to work in couples. (Woolf, “The Movies and Reality”) Although adaptation’s detractors argue that “all the directorial Scheherezades of the world cannot add up to one Dostoevsky, it does seem to be more or less acceptable to adapt Romeo and Juliet into a respected high art form, like an opera or a ballet, but not to make it into a movie. If an adaptation is perceived as ‘lowering’ a story (according to some imagined hierarchy of medium or genre), response is likely to be negative...An adaptation is a derivation that is not derivative—a work that is second without being secondary. -

The chromatic hybridism in cinema: the conjugation of color and black and white to delimitate spaces and idealize new worlds Jaime Neves Universidade Católica Portuguesa, CITAR Centro de Investigação em Ciência e Tecnologia das Artes PORTUGAL [email protected] Abstract: -Starting from an analysis of the symbolism attributed to black and white in symbiosis with color, we seek in this task to reflect on the way in which cinema seeks to obtain aesthetic, conceptual and even narrative dividends by combining in the same cinematographic piece the use color and black and white. Chromatic hybridism in cinema, let's call it that, definitively presents itself as an important film resource that enhances signifiers and, in the same way, creates or differentiates environments, time spaces and narratives. Key Words: Black and White Color Cinema Chromatic Hybridism New Worlds 1 Introduction After several years of experience, the brothers Auguste and Louis Lumière presented the cinematograph in 1895 and marked the beginning of a new era in the field of art. Cinema was born. In black and white, the still static images would now gain a new life with the illusion of movement and would exert an attractive force on the spectators watching them. The early years of cinema were years of strong technical limitations despite the creative efforts of many pioneers who aspired a cinema with sound and color. In 1928, Warner Brothers, after the successful sound experience a year earlier with Alan Crosland's Jazz Singer, concluded the sound revolution with the film The Lights of New York - the first film with fully synchronized sound. -

To celebrate that year’s 75th anniversary, we look back at directors creating some of the high points—from Mounument Valley to Kansas. According to biographers, Lewes showed his selfless devotion to Eliot by encouraging her to begin and continue writing fiction; by foster- ing the mystery of her authorship; by managing her finances; by negotiating her publishing con- tracts; by managing her schedule; by hosting a salon to promote her books; and by staying close by her side for twenty-four years until death parted them. -
The Hand of Humanity : Eliot's Religious Reformation in Middlemarch
AN ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS OF Natasha C. Peake for the degree of Master of Arts in English presented on May 6, 1996. Title: The Hand of Humanity: Eliot's Religious Reformation in Middlemarch. Abstract approved: Redacted for Privacy ell As the embodiment of the religiously unsettled Victorian Era in which she lived, George Eliot sought to discover a system of belief that would allow her to reaffirm and maintain her feelings of faith and morality. She believed that the subjective nature of traditional Christianity needed to be replaced with a more objective belief system, one centered on humanity--the Religion of Humanity. The purpose of this thesis is to examine the means in which Eliot discovers and establishes this new sense of religious order in Middlemarch by reforming and incorporating traditional religious images and rituals. Specifically, by drawingupon the practice of the laying on of hands found in all of the predominant Church rituals--the sacraments, Eliot demonstrates the major turning points in the life and faith of her main character, Dorothea Brooke. With the employment of this religiously suggestive gesture, the ability to successfully combine the traditional religious rituals and sense of order with a secular belief system is actualized. Thus, by examining how Eliot relies on the laying on of hands to signify key moments in human existence, in much the same manner that Christianity does with the sacraments such as confirmation and ordination, we can attain a clearer understanding and appreciation of George Eliot's religious reformation in Middlemarch. ©Copyright by Natasha C.
