Contact: Teddy Cahill, (919) 213-7928 Teddy www.baseballamerica.com Contact: Teddy Cahill, (919) 213-7928 [email protected], FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE June 8, 2017 COLLEGE PLAYER OF THE YEAR BRENDAN McKAY LEADS BASEBALL AMERICA'S 2017 ALL-AMERICA TEAM DURHAM, N.C.— Louisville first baseman/lefthander Brendan McKay is Baseball America’s 2017 College Player of the Year. McKay, a Preseason All-American, is hitting .356/.476/.683 with 17 home runs and is 9-3, 2.31 with 131 strikeouts in 97. 1 innings this spring, helping lead the Cardinals to their third straight appearance in super regionals. The junior is a three-time first-team All-American and projected to be a top-five pick when the draft begins Monday. McKay is one of five players who were voted first-team Preseason All-Americans by MLB scouting directors to also be named to the first team after the season. North Carolina righthander J.B. Bukauskas, Missouri State third baseman Jake Burger, UC Irvine DH Keston Hiura and Oregon State Nick Madrigal also earned that distinction. Two other first-team All- Americans were second-team Preseason All-Americans: Virginia’s Adam Haseley and Wake Forest’s Stuart Fairchild. In all, 13 players who made one of the Preseason All-America teams are again honored on the postseason teams. McKay is the only player to repeat as a first-team All-American this year, earning the same utility position nod he earned in 2015 and 2016. He also was also named Baseball America Freshman of the Year in 2015. Burger and Haseley are the only other players to repeat as All-Americans this season. Both earned third-team honors last year. Oregon State and North Carolina, the top two national seeds in the NCAA Tournament, led the way with three first-team selections each. Joining Madrigal on the first team are starters Luke Heimlich and Jake Thompson. Bukauskas is joined by closer Josh Hiatt and shortstop Logan Warmoth. Louisville and Kentucky also had three All-Americans across the three teams. Six schools -- Florida, Louisiana State, Missouri State, Southern Mississippi, Vanderbilt and Wake Forest – had two players honored. In all, 34 schools are represented on the All-America teams. The Southeastern Conference led all conferences with 12 All-Americans. The Atlantic Coast Conference had 10 players on the three teams. The staff of Baseball America selected the All-America teams after the regionals.
