FREE TRANSFORMERS: EVOLUTIONS 2012: HEARTS OF STEEL PDF

It was intended to be part of a comic book line titled The Transformers: Evolutionsfollowing the same idea of DC Comics ' Elseworlds series. Each series was to create an alternative reality: a continuity in a different time era during which the Transformers would exist. In other words, the Transformers can exist at places and at points in time that would not be possible in the current 'IDW-verse'. As ofonly the Hearts of Steel series was produced, which is set in the United States during the Industrial Revolution. The rest of the series was cancelled, likely due to poor sales and IDW had announced that there would be no more Evolutions series until after the movieas Hasbro did not want to make things confusing with more alternate universe tales. The story begins with the Autobots and Decepticons waging war on Earth around the time of a previous ice age. No explanation is given how they arrived on Earth, but their alternate modes are metallic fantasy beasts. The freezing temperatures and lack of energy forces both sides to take shelter and lie dormant for eons. The Transformers: Evolutions 2012: Hearts of Steel retreat to a cave while the Decepticons are later seen underwater. At some point during the Industrial Revolutionnoise outside their cave awakens the Autobot Bumblebee. He ventures outside the cave to discover the planet's new dominant species — man, and that they have developed steam powered technology and the capacity to build railroads. He observes some men, featuring the famous John Henry enjoying the labor of driving spikes into the ground for a new railroad. Bumblebee changes his alternate form Transformers: Evolutions 2012: Hearts of Steel be a steam-powered spike driver and helps the humans who are unaware of his true robotic nature. Meanwhile, the Decepticons awaken and start plans to take over Earth. Starscream is acting commander while Megatron is still powered down, predictably planning to destroy him while he is inactive and defenceless. When Shockwave approaches failed inventor Tobias Muldoon to assist them with the technology of the age, the Decepticons begin their plans in earnest. The Insecticonswho transform into a combined battle train, rob a bank train to help fund the building of their base. John Henry finds out about the Decepticon train robbery and informs Transformers: Evolutions 2012: Hearts of Steel, who then tells his fellow Autobots. Muldoon, meanwhile has realized Starscream's true intentions. Gathering support from the author Mark Twain after Ravage tries and fails to kill him, Muldoon and his friends aim to stop the Decepticons from reaching New York City and capturing an experimental electrical generator, which Starscream plans to use to destroy Megatron. Linking up with Henry and the Autobots, the heroes survive an attack from Scourge reconfigured as a Zeppelin and manage to divert the Decepticon train convoy into a chasm. The Autobots return to hibernation as the humans speculate on their fate. The Hearts of Steel universe was later be play part of Infestation 2where they fought against the Great Old Oneswho broke free from their interdimensional prison as a result of the stories of H. The Hearts of Steel characters later played a role in present day during the crossover event series The X-Files: Conspiracy. They crash landed on Earth due to the effects of the Talisman wherein Shockwave found them and altered their memories to make them think they were the Cybertronian characters they portrayed. This allowed Shockwave to see how the Great War would play out using "copies" of the primary participants. After being taken in by Baron Ironblood and Garrison Krieger, "Bumblebee" would eventually shake off his mental conditioning and return to his original identity of the Eurakian known as Centurion. In the series, John Henry is a large bald man who drives spikes into the ground while laying track for the railroad. His hammering wakes up the Autobot Bumblebee who along with the rest Transformers: Evolutions 2012: Hearts of Steel his squad lay deactivated deep within tunnels below the earth. Bumblebee is almost caught by John Henry until Bumblebee changes into an automated spike-driving machine. Here he is portrayed as being fearful of being replaced by modern machinery. Twain later becomes a staunch ally of Muldoon after the Decepticons betray him. Only four Autobots were mentioned by name in the series: Bumblebee, Ironhide in the TPB when he gives his name it was changed to Sideswipe and Optimus Prime although he did not appear, though others are recognizable as G1 Generation 1 characters, introduced as toys in The opposite is true for the Decepticons, with many being named. Others are left unnamed but are recognizable such as Ravage. Transformers: Evolutions 2012: Hearts of Steel addition to their original alternate modes as fantasy beasts, the Transformers later adopt alternate modes appropriate to the era in which they awaken. As mentioned, Bumblebee becomes an automated spike-driver and the other awakened Autobots become locomotives or train cars. The Decepticons are a bit more varied, although many of them also transform into train cars. Shockwave becomes Transformers: Evolutions 2012: Hearts of Steel ironclad warship. Starscream and his Seekers transform into Wright brothers -esque propeller driven aircraft. The Insecticons combine into a ramming battle train. Scourge has a huge inflatable attachment that allows him to become a zeppelin. Ravage's alternate mode appears to be an engine. One of the covers also show Squawkbox with the robot mode combining a mechanical eagle and gorillathough they likely don't become cassettes. The trade paperback TPB of the story was released in December The TPB includes all the different covers used throughout the series and some additional art by series artist Guido Guidi. Of particular note is that the gallery includes unused designs for both Optimus Prime and Megatron, although neither appeared in the story. Prime was shown to transform into a train, while Megatron had two different sketches, showing that he would transform into either a cannon or a revolver. Writer Chuck Dixon has said that he deliberately wrote the story in such a way that it can be considered part of the Generation 1 continuity. As only a few Transformers are awakened from hibernation Transformers: Evolutions 2012: Hearts of Steel the story and all of them return to sleep at the end, it can be considered a "lost tale" that has simply not been mentioned in any other story. However "Hearts of Steel" does contradict the G1 cartoon and comic universe, at least, because Scourge appears, despite not existing in the animated continuity until after and being formed from the remains of Thundercrackeras well as the Insecticons, who according to the animated series were kept separate to the other Decepticons in Megatron's ship. This does not mean that it is out of place in the Generation 1 continuity overall, Transformers: Evolutions 2012: Hearts of Steel IDW's G1 continuity is separate from the G1 cartoon and Marvel comic universe, and does not feature Scourge as Transformers: Evolutions 2012: Hearts of Steel reformatted Thundercracker and almost certainly would not, given Galvatron being a separate entity from Megatron and the absence of Unicron in the IDWverse-until the end of First Strike. Other inconsistencies Transformers: Evolutions 2012: Hearts of Steel the fact that the comic implies that the ancient war between the Autobots and Decepticons was not waged on Cybertron, but rather on Earth. Also, the Arkthe Autobot's ship with which they fled from Cybertron and crash- landed on Earth in the G1 continuity, is entirely absent from the comic and does not appear to exist. It is set in an alternate Generation 1 continuity in which the Transformers' first contact with humanity is in the late 19th century, rather than the 20th. The series is written by by Chuck Dixon. Transformers: Evolutions 2012: Hearts of Steel McKeever was originally announced as artist an produced the piece of which eventually became the wraparound cover of issue 1but for unknown reasons, Guido Guidi took over the job, designing the characters' new 19th century forms and drawing three of four four issues of the series with 3 drawn by Antonio Vasquez and Luis Czerniawski. Five years after the original mini-series, the creative team returned to the universe with a two-issue tie-in to IDW's Infestation 2 event. Inthe series was brought into the modern day as part of the X-Files: Conspiracy crossover. Ina version of the story was folded into the IDW continuity via the Revolutionaries series. The story opens with the Transformers engaged in a battle on Ice Age Earthand having adopted bizarre animal alternate forms as a result. When the climate cools, both sides retreat underground and enter a period of stasis, not awakening until the 19th Century. Soon both sides are making alliances with humans and utilizing the technology of the age to continue their war, with the Decepticons attempting to reach an electrical generating station in New York City to fuel their war machine. John Henry and Mark Twainalong with other historical figures, play prominent roles in the book. It is not possible to pin down exactly when this story takes place, due to some contradictory information that doesn't match up to real life. The Civil War is not mentioned, so it is most likely after Mark Twain lived in San Francisco from toand he appears to live there in this story. However, he claims in issue 4, to have one daughter, which would place the story between the birth of Susy Clemens and the birth of Clara Clemens. The finale of the story involves a race to New York, where it is noted Thomas Edison has completed his first electrical generating facility; this must be Pearl Street Stationwhich was not operational in real life until Transformers: Evolutions 2012: Hearts of Steel The sequel, Infestation 2was explicitly set inand returning human characters did not Transformers: Evolutions 2012: Hearts of Steel to have aged as many as twenty years. The Hasbro Heroes Sourcebook see "Continuity"below would go on to posit that the events of the miniseries took place years before the present day. Assuming that the present day Transformers: Evolutions 2012: Hearts of Steel to Transformers: Evolutions 2012: Hearts of Steel yearthe book's Transformers: Evolutions 2012: Hearts of Steel of publication, this would place the events of Hearts of Steel sometime around the year — while this estimate doesn't really line up with any of the aforementioned events, it was used on this very wiki as an arbitrary placeholder date for many years. The first few pages of Transformers: Evolutions 2012: Hearts of Steel story show that the Transformers came to Earth immediately prior to an unspecified ice age, and fought a war there and then using dinosaurs, giant insects, and possibly other beast-forms as alternate modesbefore going into hibernation until the 19th Century. Many of the main characters wear these distinctive spiky bodies for the first half of the story, before taking on vehicle-based forms. Where necessary in this wiki, this prelude to Hearts of Steel is referred to using the unofficial term " Ice Age Wars ". In this story, most of the Transformers take the form of 19th-century locomotives and railway cars, rather than 20th-century automobiles, airplanes, and the like. Some notable exceptions are Shockwavewho becomes an ironclad ship, Scourgewho transforms into a blimp, and the Seekerswho become biplanes which is a bit of an anachronism. Optimus Prime only appears in slumber and Megatron does not appear at all, though concept drawings for both of them are included in the trade paperback. The Transformers portrayed in the story seem to adopt not only the appearance of Earth's machines, but its technology level as well. Locomotive- form Bumblebee is fueled by coal, Scourge flies using a real gasbag, and Ravage is sufficiently vulnerable that a gas explosion is Transformers: Evolutions 2012: Hearts of Steel to incapacitate him. This is not unprecedented; a similar phenomenon is hinted at in Dreamwave's G. Joe crossover, while in some original G1 stories, the Transformers coveted supplies of gasoline. Still, whether this is an actual story point or merely a stylistic choice is not clear. Originally, Hearts of Steel was conceived as the first installment in Evolutionsan ongoing series of Elseworlds -style tales that would re-imagine the Transformers in different time periods and settings. For a variety of reasons, Evolutions fell through, leaving Hearts of Steel as a small, strange continuity separate from IDW's ongoing "Generation 1" universe. As a result of this isolation, it hosted several crossover events—notably 's Infestation 2 and 's X-Files one-shot—that would have otherwise undermined the narrative direction of the main ongoing universe. In" Ask Vector Prime " feature gave the Hearts of Steel universe its customary universal stream designationseemingly confirming it as an entirely separate world from any of IDW's other Transformers faire. InIDW announced the formation of the Hasbro Universewhich aimed to amalgamate several disparate Hasbro properties together into a single shared continuity. Piggybacking off the back of the Revolution maxi-series came Revolutionarieswhich told a story involving, among other things, ancient Transformer activity on Earth - including cameos of the Hearts of Steel characters. This caused no small amount of head-scratching and confusion among fans, and was the subject of vigorous speculation for several months before issue 5 of Revolutionaries revealed the reason why. In this sequence of events, the characters who would become the Hearts of Steel Transformers were, in fact, amnesiac Maximal explorers; they had been brainwashed by Shockwave into believing that they were the Autobots and Decepticons and fighting the "Ice Age Wars," which were revealed to be a series of wargames Shockwave orchestrated and studied for his own strategic benefit. Revolutionaries 5 revealed what had happened to the lost Maximals between the events of Infestation 2 2 and the modern day, [1] introducing " Hearts of Steel Bumblebee"—in reality a 'bot named Centurion —as a supporting character. In doing this, however, IDW did not strictly retcon out the original events of Hearts of Steelbut created essentially two versions of the exact same tale, each occurring in distinct universes. But the book was Transformers: Evolutions 2012: Hearts of Steel massive let down. I thought the build up for the story was good and lloked forward to seeing how it came to a head. A book that could have really stood out as a great story with excellent artistic designs ultimately ended up being quite the disappointment. After reading this, I can see why the "Evolutions" books were cancelled. Fun Fun book, not too series. It's an "Elseworlds" style story where the Transformers have been moved to the 's and steampunked out. The story is dumb and the art quality isn't great, but it is highly creative however. The steampunk Transformers designs all look very interesting and some look cool too. The ending is anticlimactic. The story just kind of runs out of steam. Or runs out of track - pick your metaphor. It just ends. And no Optimus, no Megatron. That's weak, Transformers: Evolutions 2012: Hearts of Steel. And not much fighti Fun Fun book, not too series. And not much fighting. This had such potential with its Transformers: Evolutions 2012: Hearts of Steel concept. The plot is thin, flat, generic, and boring. The art is the redeeming factor, and made it worth it. There's nothing worse than a lovely concept that gets buried under subpar execution. At first glance, a steampunk Transformers tale should be one of my absolute favourite stories since I love both of those aspects very much. But while the writing is passable, the artwork is far too muddy to really enjoy. In fact, I find the story takes itself too seriously. Something like this should've been written more entertaing and fun with artwork to match. Like the team who work on Transformers vs GI Joe, There's nothing worse than a lovely concept that gets buried under subpar execution. Like the team Transformers: Evolutions 2012: Hearts of Steel work on Transformers vs GI Joe, for example. Going back to the writing, there were too many people in this book to keep track of or care about, like the Bayformers movies. Only Bumblebee and Starscream really contribute to the plot while the other Autobots and Decepticons are simultaniously unrecognizable or recognizable but background characters who do nothing to advance the plot. For the humans, too many of them look alike or very forgettable. Even the great Mark Twain, who manages to kill a Decepticon an actual well done part of the book doesn't really interact or move the plot along compared to the folk hero Transformers: Evolutions 2012: Hearts of Steel Henry or original character Tobias Muldoon, who actively engage with the Transformers. In fact, both Optimus and Megatron are Transformers: Evolutions 2012: Hearts of Steel in this mini series. I imagine that they had the attitude of Marlon Brando and threw prima donna tantrums that lead to their uselessness here. All in all, this feels like how a bad movie seeks aspirations to be a multi-sequel franchise with no hindsight of if it fails. The Insecticons steal a shipment of money because the Decepticons need money to fund their operation?!? Since when do they need money? The art Transformers: Evolutions 2012: Hearts of Steel good and the concept interesting, but damn the story was lame. I think that's what killed it for me. No Soundwave either.
