AND THEN SOME! WORDS Phil Wain / PICTURES Stephen Davison The Isle of Man TT Races are the last of the great motorcycle tests in the When the TT lost its World Championship status, many thought it was world today and, at 100 years old they show no sign of slowing down. Instead the beginning of the end but, instead, it became a haven for real road race of creaking and rocking, the event is right back to the top of the motorcycle specialists who were keen to pit their wits against the Mountain Course, tree, continuing to maintain its status throughout the world and attracting the most challenging and demanding course in the world. Names like Grant, the fi nest road racers on the planet. Excitement, triumph, glory, exhilaration, Williams, Rutter, Hislop, Fogarty, McCallen, Jefferies and McGuinness came to and tragedy – the TT has it all and for two weeks in June the little Island in the forefront, but throughout it all one name stood out – Joey Dunlop.

  • We Choose Our Top 10 Most Memorable TT Faces
The TT’s most memorable faces Who do you think are the most memorable TT racers of all time? Here we pick our top 10, in alphabetical order. If you disagree, let us know your choices by emailing [email protected] Giacomo Agostini Agostini may well lay the claim to being the coolest motorcycle racer of all time. With a brilliant 10 wins on the TT course Ago, as he is known to generations of fans, also won 15 world titles. The famous Ago’s Leap at the bottom of Bray Hill is named after this Italian legend. Geoff Duke The 6 time TT winner and 6 time world champion is without question one of the all time greats. Like Joey Dunlop, Mike Hailwood, Ago, McGuinness and Dave Molyneux (see below), the highly popular Isle of Man-based two-wheeled hero has a spot on the course named after him. Joey Dunlop The quiet man from Ballymoney holds the all-time record for most number of wins at the TT – 26. His death at a race in Estonia in 2000 shocked the world but the family name is still synonymous with the dangerous and thrilling sport of road racing. Mike Hailwood Mike the Bike is not just a TT - but a worldwide legendary motorsport – icon. Winner of 14 TTs, he will be forever remembered for making the greatest comeback ever on the Mountain Course, winning a further 2 races after having been retired from TT racing for several years. Steve Hislop The Flying Haggis, as he was sometimes known, won a fantastic 11 TT races during a career which also saw him win British titles on short circuits.

  • Isle of Man Tt Races 2006
ISLE OF MAN TT RACES 2006 MAY 27th-JUNE 9th A GUIDE TO THIS YEAR’S SOLO AND SIDECAR TT STARS Rider: Bruce Anstey Age: 36 From: Wellington, New Zealand Number of TT wins: 4 Number of TT podiums: 13 Fastest TT Lap: 126.52mph (5th) Team for 2006: TAS Suzuki A man of few words, the quietly spoken Kiwi does his talking out there on the road and with 4 TT wins and 13 podiums since 2000, he delivers where it matters. Bruce didn’t have a great 2005 as he was blighted by Bruce Anstey en route to victory in the mechanical problems, illness and a few crashes but he still added another TT win to his collection and is sure 2005 Superstock TT. to be there or thereabouts in all of his races this year. Now in his third year with TAS Suzuki, Anstey is a hard charging rider and an incredibly fi erce competitor. Rider: Adrian Archibald Age: 36 From: Ballymoney, Northern Ireland Number of TT wins: 3 Number of TT podiums: 7 Fastest TT Lap: 126.78mph (4th) Team for 2006: Team Racing Yamaha A man with a point to prove, Adrian left TAS Suzuki after a disappointing year in 2005, compounded by running out of fuel whilst comfortably leading the Superstock race. With fi ve podiums in the last six Superbike races, the Ballymoney ace was also on lap record pace in last year’s Senior so it’s clear that he’s a potential race winner in Adrian Archibald has the talent and 2006.

Entitled ‘Back to the Future: The Hizzy Years’ this celebration took place 30 years after Steve set the first ever 120mph lap around the legendary TT Mountain Course, a speed that remains a benchmark three decades on. A set of two signed presentation boards by TT riders and VIP's will be up for auction. Each of the two coins measures 50cm diameter and have been hand-signed during either the 2019 TT or 2019 Festival of Motorcycling. A list of signatures can be found below. The coins will come complete with a disc of images of the TT riders and VIP's holding the coin they have autographed. Proceeds of the auction will be donated to the TT Riders Association. Isle of Man Stamps & Coins General Manager, Maxine Cannon said, “We are immensely proud to partner with the T.T.R.A. to not only raise funds for the charity but also to commemorate one of the greatest TT Riders who set the first ever 120 mph lap on the mountain course. In 2011, the Centenary of the TT Mountain Course, fans chose the 1992 Senior TT, (which quickly unfolded into a thrilling battle between Steve Hislop and Carl Fogarty), as the greatest race of all time on the iconic Mountain Course.” She added “We must remember too that without the enthusiasm and support of Paul and Janet Quayle who carried the boards around the Grandstand , Peel Day on Mad Sunday and Festival of Jurby, none of this would be possible.

  • THE PERFECT PARTNERSHIP from 2002, Back When RL360° Was
THE PERFECT PARTNERSHIP From 2002, back when RL360° was Scottish Life, right through to 2014 as we celebrate our management-led buyout and rebrand to RL360°, there’s no doubt we have enjoyed a successful partnership with the TT. But our association with the thrilling event is not only on the sponsorship side. RL360°’s Finance and Commercial Director Mike Crellin enjoyed a successful TT career, from which he retired in 2008. At that point, he had completed 14 TT races, ranking 44th in the all time number of finishes (one ahead of Giacomo Agostini). Here we take a look at the TT stories which have made the headlines over the past 13 years. 2002 We began our long association with the TT as the event was held for the first time in two years. It was back to business as usual following the disastrous UK foot-and- mouth outbreak of 2001, which led the Isle of Man Government to cancel the event in an effort to protect Manx livestock. Organisers celebrated with a one-off cash injection of around £200,000 plus a bonus of £5,000 to each race winner. On the track, David Jeffries led from start to finish in the Formula One race, while Richard ‘Milky’ Quayle was crowned a local hero when he became the first Manxman to win a solo TT since 1967 with victory in the Lightweight 400cc. 2003 The death of lap record holder David Jefferies during practice on Thursday 29 May cast a shadow over this year’s event. Adrian Archibald dedicated his emotional victory in the Formula One to his TAS Suzuki team mate.
