Since 1999 ALLARD MOTOR WORKS Vol. 13 - Spring, 2013

TheNEWSLETTER Cad-Allard Makes a Comeback! Allard Motor Works is putting the final touches on the first - powered Allard since the mid-1950s. The launch of Cad-Allard J2X MkII, chassis number #001, sets the stage for additional Cad-Allard orders from customers who have a nostalgic bent.

The new Cad-Allard derives its power from the new supercharged Ca- dillac V8 currently found in the Cadillac CTS-V. Engine management is controlled by a central processing unit with accessories to deliver a ‘green footprint’ yet does not sacrifice any of the adrenalin that 556 hp generates, and the 540 lb.-ft. of torque that firmly bonds passengers to their seats. The new Cadillac LSA was designed by GM to meet the strict emission standards found in the state of California - currently the highest in the world.

The engine management system includes a mass air flow sensor, catalytic converters, oxygen sensors and an evaporative emissions canister. Acceleration is controlled through a drive-by-wire throttle pedal. Our Cad-Allard J2X MkII exhaust is routed through twin sidepipe-mufflers that produce an assertive V8 sound that will give performance sports car enthusiasts goose-bumps. These side- pipes are shielded and thus maintain a maximum temperature of 98ºF whether the car is in a slow crawl along a July parade route or on the track. Roger Allard comments that “the sound is very sweet. At low rpm you get a nice deep-throat rumble. However, when the tachometer races past the 2,500 RPM level, you know the Cad-Allard is not powered by a sewing ma- chine motor.”

The Cad-Allard’s legendary exploits in the early 1950’s are still etched in the memories of a generation of sports car racing fans who were fortu- nate enough to see competition Allards on major tracks. They were more prevalent in the USA, racing such circuits as Watkins Glen, Sebring, Pebble Beach, Torrey Pines and Bridgehampton. However, a few Cadillac powered Allards did see action in Europe and South America where they reached the podium in the 24-Hours of Le Mans and the Grand Prix of Argentina. At Le Mans in 1950, the 331 cu.in. Cad-Allard, driven by Sydney Allard and Tom Cole, completed the 24-hour endurance race in 3rd place overall and was first in its class. Other notable drivers that forged the Cad-Allard legend include iconic figures such as John Fitch, Carroll Shelby, Zora Arkus-Duntov, Freddy Wacker and Erwin Goldschmidt.

In the post-war era, steel import restrictions in Britain prevented the purchase of American engines. The net result was the export of com- petition Allard J2X’s (J-series) without engines ( see p. 3). Upon arrival at their destination, these ‘rolling chassis’ were fitted with American V8s, most notably the 331 Cadillac and the 331 Hemi. Other engine transplants included Buick and Oldsmobile V8s.

The return of the Cad-Allard will certainly delight the ‘old-guard’ but will surely appeal to the many newcomers who are keen to blend tradi- tion and ‘high-tech’ for a reliable high-performance ride and a unique and exciting ownership experience.

www.allardj2x.com • [email protected] Page 3 Since 1999 ALLARD MOTOR WORKS Vol. 13 - Spring, 2013 Bill and His ‘Bitch’ The relationship between Bill Bauder and his Best of Class 1952 Allard J2X #3059 (nicknamed ‘Bitch’ because of its racing eccen- tricities) can be characterised as quirky but it is a long term love/hate affair that has lasted for more than 50 years and continues to this day. However, the ambivalent nature of their relationship has changed considerably in the 9 years since Bill stopped racing in 2004. Today, this bond has only strengthened and now they are unseparable.

Bill, a retired architect living in Texas, was a speed-junkie who pushed his Allard to the limits. As he reflects on a successful series of podium finishes during his hay-days, he says with some nostalgia that “my J2X is the gift that just keeps on giving!”

Today, basking in the glory of a first place class win at Keels & Wheels, the silver-haired octogenarian is quick to assert that #3059 is NOT a trailer queen. Although Bill still maintains his J2X in an immaculate condition, he continues to work out his Allard at every opportunity, never hesitating to stomp his foot on the accelerator from time to time. On the concours circuit, Bill has collected an impressive series of trophies from Best of Class to Best of Show and People’s Choice awards. His latest was the recent 2013 Keels & Wheels Concours where he won the Best of Class (European Post-War Racing Cars).

Since Bill’s J2X is one of the few vintage race cars of that era sporting whitewall tires, the question is often asked of him, ‘Why white- walls?’ While Bill has a number of prepared answers for that question (some very humorous), the real answer is closely related to performance. To back Bill’s claim, one only has to dig into the history of road racing in the 1950’s and you will find that one other Al- lard (possibly the most successful racer of the period) was an Allard J2 with whitewalls! Why? Because at that time, tire manufactur- ers were switching tires to synthetics and whitewalls had yet to make this transformation (the latter had more grip). The driver of that black Allard J2 #14 with red wire wheels was the legendary Bill Pollack, a fearless West Coast racer who dominated the racing circuit for 3 years. As Pollack stated, “Whatever it takes to win, and if it takes whitewalls to get better traction, then the whitewalls stay on!”

When Bill Bauder turned to me and asked jokingly whether one could get whitewalls on the new Allard J2X MkII showcased next to his J2X, I politely suggested that when it comes to grip, the J2X MkII’s tires are wide enough to compensate. “Thanks, but no thanks!”

Don’t let the whitewalls fool you. Bill Bauder’s J2X cranks out 500 hp and has seen a lot of action on the track. Tom Carsen’s black Cad-Allard J2 #14 (with a luggage rack on the back) in the hands of Bill Pollack would ride roughshod over the Ferraris, Porches and Jags for two years on the West Coast.

www.allardj2x.com • [email protected] Page 5 Since 1999 ALLARD MOTOR WORKS Vol. 13 - Spring, 2013 Cad-Allard: Historic Perspective To many 1950’s sports car aficionados, the term ‘Cad-Allard’ is synonymous with any and all Allards on a racing circuit. The inference, of course, is that all of the successful Allards were powered by Cadillac V8 engines - a misconception that persists today. The vast majority of the early Al- lard cars were fitted with Ford V8s (3.6 to 3.9L). These were primar- ily the touring cars, sedans and cabriolets. But, for competition, J- series Allards (J2, J2X and JR) sported a variety of American V8s - the Chrysler Firepower Hemi, the Cadillac 331, Buick, Oldsmobile, etc.). The Allard J2X, which was primarily an export vehicle, was gener- ally shipped without engine or paint, leaving the choice up to the end-user. Essentially, these Allards were among the first bespoke hot rods, using whatever the owner could afford to be able to go racing, or using whatever was left on the garage shelf to make his car qualify.

In 1950, the introduction of the Cadillac 331 V8 to the Allard road- ster was triggered by a successful Anglo-American racer, Tom Cole, who was competing in Europe with a Jag- uar. Looking for that competitive edge, Cole was anxious to use GM’s newly released brutish Cadillac 5.4L V8 which he believed would make the Allard’s lightweight J-series competition roadster a winner. With this in mind, Tom Cole contacted Sydney Allard to order one of his lightweight Allards with a new Cadillac V8. How- ever, achieving this combination would not prove to be an easy task. Post-war restrictions on the import of steel into the UK pre-empted any purchase of foreign engines. Undeterred, Tom Cole removed this obstacle by having the Allard Motor Company ship a J2 (without engine) to America. Upon the arrival of the rolling chas- sis in the US, a new Cadillac engine was installed and Cole headed immediately for the track, racking up great results. This whetted Sydney’s appetite for ‘Made in America’ V8s and following some creative brainstorming, Cole arranged to ship two Cadillac engines to the Allard works in London “for development purposes.”

Upon arrival, one of the Cadillac V8s was quickly stuffed into a J2, loaded into the Allard transporter and taken to Palermo for the Tour of Sicily. With the starting time at 4:56 a.m. and in the pouring rain, the Cad-Allard roared off the start line. However, after an hour out of the gates, Sydney side-swiped a wall triggering a long trail of flames from the ruptured fuel tank. As soon as Sydney brought the car to a stop, the J2 was consumed by the flames. Not ready to see their precious Caddy go up in smoke, Sydney and navigator, Tom Lush, managed to save the engine by burying it in gravel and sand, using their helmets and bare hands. The remains were hauled back to London and the Cadillac engine was transplanted into yet another J2 just in time for a win at Goodwood.

Soon after, at the urging of Tom Cole, the Cad-Allard was prepared for the 24-Hours of Le Mans where the team of Allard & Cole placed 3rd overall. And so began the legend of the Cad-Allard which spread rapidly fol- lowing successive wins in Europe and in North America.

In summary, the Allard J2 and the J2X were common sights on the podium during the 1950-54 seasons, with the Cadillac 331 and the Chrysler Hemi 331 regularly topping the list. If the moniker ‘Cad-Allard’ resonates amongst ‘old-timers’, it is also because GM aggressively promoted its new performance engine, as well as its support of one of Allard’s fiercest competitors, the US-made Cunningham C-4R that also ran at Le Mans and numerous circuits in America. If today the public still refers to the J-series Allard as a Cad-Allard, it testifies to the power of successful branding - a tribute to the Cadillac Division of GM.

To this day, track time for the MkII has been confined to some lapping, pre-delivery track testing and pace/safety car duties at vari- ous vintage racing events across North America. The exception, of course, is the spectacular feature on Fifth Gear TV in the UK when co-hostess, Vicki Henderson-Butler delighted viewers with an exhilarating track experience. (seen on the first page of AMW’s web site).

With the recent purchase of Allard J2X #9021 by rally racer, Thierry Mé- négoz, the British Racing Green Hemi-powered MkII is headed for ‘boot camp’. “This roadster has racing DNA,” states the new owner. “The MkII is designed for serious driving ‘right out of the box’. It is noth- ing to tweek it for competitive events with only a few minor adjust- ments,” adds Ménégoz.

Initial track testing in- cluded two hours of nearly continuous high- speed lapping to es- tablish a baseline for adjustments. Copious notes were taken, minor adjustments were made and testing resumed. The initial testing ses- sions were shared between Thierry Ménégoz and Roger Allard, both complicit in ‘shaking out’ the Allard.

“The MkII has a lot of potential for performance events,”commented Ménégoz. “Most of the work will be focused on the suspension ad- justments, the driving position and compliance with the technical re- quirements for various competitive events - hill climbing, autocross, rally, etc.” Number 9021 has already undergone changes in camber, precise wheel alignment and new rubber. The next steps will include the installation of 5-point seat belts, roll bar adjustments, racing seats, cut-off switches, a fuel cell and a quick-release steering wheel boss, allowing a smaller racing wheel to be used for competition with the Moto-Lita mahogany wheel gracing the cockpit when on show.

“The chassis design, the stability of the car, the inboard rear disc brakes and the tremendous amount of torque generated by the MOPAR Hemi are the key ingredients that make the J2X MkII so much fun on the track,” comments Thierry. More testing, of course, will be required to validate the adjustments - a task that both Thierry and Roger will be delighted to share.

www.allardj2x.com • [email protected] Page 8 Since 1999 ALLARD MOTOR WORKS Vol. 13 - Spring, 2013 GREEN WITH ENVY ! Allard Motor Works (AMW) is pleased to announce the first installation of a California Air Resources Board (CARB) compliant engine in its Allard J2X MkII™. This spring, a new J2X MkII™ will be titled and registered with a 2013 GM LSA supercharged V8 allowing the car to meet some of the toughest emission standards in the world - those of the State of California.

Company President, Roger Allard, is delighted at this ‘tour de force’ for a number of reasons. “To begin with, AMW supports the efforts made to reduce vehicle emissions and is pleased that the technology is available, allowing us to make that move forward. Secondly, the myth that horsepower needs to be sacrificed to meet those standards is false.Measure The 6.2LM entsGM LSA E- Rod crate engine that we are installing cranks out a whopping 556 hp and 551 lb.-ft. of torque and is fully emission-compliant! However, the ultimate challenge for us was to shoehorn the LSA into the space-challenged engine compartment of the J2X MkII. But, it’s done! (including the customer’s optional air-conditioning unit).”

EPA was never in the automotive lexicon of the 1950s, but it is very present today, not only in North America but in Europe, China, Japan, Australia and New Zealand. Since emission reduction is so present in our consciousness and everyday vocab- ulary, car manufacturers are working overtime to meet increasingly strict emission restrictions. Today, more and more states are adopting the California model, par- Packaging Dimensions ticularly for urban areas. AMW continues to offer its GM RamJet 350 fuel-injected V8, along with two MOPAR engines - the 5.7L and the newly re- leased 6.4L Hemi V8. The recently announced MOPAR 5.7L S.S.H. (Street Spec Hemi) will soon be available. This MOPAR engine is also a California emissions-compliant fuel-injected engine. However, this engine is not available with the production multi-displacement system (MDS). The S.S.H. MOPAR V8 comes with a 2-year / 24,000-mile limited warranty. The 5.7L HHS delivers 375 hp and 400 lb.-ft of torque.

Currently, AMW J2X MkII owners are driving their roadsters with power ranges from 350 hp to 640 hp. Following in the foot- steps of J2X MkII #001 (6.1L Hemi), the new Cadillac LSA will bring to two the number of supercharged MkIIs on the road. Shoehorned into the tight engine cavity of AMW’s 2,700-lb roadster, the only things louder than the screams of the tires are the accompanying bragging rights. This said, both engines are very drivable and provide a smooth and enjoyable ride - one only has to resist the temptation at the stop light!
