(b) By February 15,2002, and each odd-numbered year, thereafter, the board of regents ofthe University of • Minnesota must submit a report to the commissioner of finance and the chairs of the higher education • finance committees delineating: (1) the five undergraduate degree programs determined to be ofhighest priority to the system, and the revenue necessary to advance each program to be a center of excellence; (2) • the reallocation of money and curricular and staffing changes, by campus and program, made to advance the • system's priorities; (3) baseline data, and the methodology used to measure, the number of first generation students admitted systemwide, together with a plan to increase both the recruitment and retention through • graduation of these students; (4) progress towards increasing the percentage of students graduating within • four, five, and six years as reported in IPEDS. Data should be provided for each institution by race, • ethnicity, and gender. Data provided should include information on successful retention strategies and the money allocated to enhance student retention; (5) progress towards increasing the revenue received, from all • sources, to support research activities. Data provided should include information on the increase in funding • from each source; and (6) progress of the academic health center in meeting the goals and outcomes in paragraph (c) including how money appropriated from the medical endowment fund contributed to meeting • specific workforce training and health education goals for the academic health center. • (c) The Academic Health Center, in cooperation with the department of health, shall: (1) develop new strategies for health care delivery and professional training in this state that takes into account the changing • racial and ethnic composition of this state; (2) develop new strategies to meet the health care workforce • needs in the state; and (3) base these strategies on analysis of the population's health status and • opportunities for improvement. • • •- • • • • • Executive Summary • " ... DREGAN Project History and Study Design DREGAN is a community-based participatory study of tobacco use among Southeast Asians in Minnesota. 6 Each of the Southeast Asian communities has a unique history associated with tobacco use. 6 Interviews with community leaders helped design the survey of community members. 7 The DREGAN research team developed a culturally appropriate survey of community members. 7 Interviews with community leaders informed the analysis of the relationship between culture and tobacco use. 9 Obtaining accurate data is challenging. 9 Southeast Asians tend to give the perceived polite response. 9 Data collection methods may affect how completely the study sample represents Southeast Asian communities. 10 Still, the current study provides the most detailed description to date of tobacco use among Minnesota’s Southeast Asian communities. 10 II. Smoking Prevalence Tobacco use threatens the health of Southeast Asian communities. 11 Smoking rates vary across Southeast Asian communities. 11 Hmong community leaders explained that smoking was not common in their homeland, but is a growing concern in the United States. 12 Cambodian, Lao and Vietnamese community leaders described smoking as very common. 12 Southeast Asian men are more likely to smoke than women. 12 Southeast Asian community leaders explained that smoking was acceptable only for men in the homeland.

Minnesotans welcomed Liberian refugees with open arms, and today our state is home to the largest community of Liberian Americans of any state in the nation.

    “I don’t know why you say goodbye...” Perceived Relationship Rules on St Olaf Campus Dan Murphy, Ryan Trostrud and Elaine Atcheson Abstract This paper discusses perceived social rules on St Olaf campus. We were particularly interested in researching perceived social rules pertaining to relationships on campus. We interviewed a convenience sample of students on campus through personal interviews and larger focus groups. There was a wide representation of place of origin for the interviewees - we talked to in-state students, out-of-state domestic students, and international students. We found that there is a wide range in definitions of "acquaintances", "friends", and "Minnesota Nice"; the differences in opinion were not necessarily based on where the people were from. It is common for people to become friends through convenience (i.e. classes together, studying abroad, living near each other). There is a strong sense of a St Olaf community that is distinct from, but still a part of, the Northfield community. Setting St. Olaf College is a liberal arts college with approximately three thousand students. It is located in Northfield, Minnesota, just forty minutes south of Minneapolis. The college was founded in 1874 by Norwegian immigrants and is currently associated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). Although the college has students from nearly every state across America and over thirty countries, a majority of students are from the Midwest and Minnesota. Like many other liberal arts colleges, classes are taught in a wide variety of disciplines. St. Olaf has an international reputation for its music program and is a leading college 1 in environmental science and sustainability.

  • 2020 Minnesota K-12 Academic Standards in Social Studies First Draft
    Decisions by the Committee for the First Draft 1. The Career, College, and Civic Life Readiness Statement (see below) guided the writing of standards and benchmarks and led the committee to emphasize a more inclusive approach to social studies education. 2. Standards will be written as anchor standards (statements that span the K-12 grade range), and will be based on the C3 Framework’s Dimensions. 3. Benchmarks will be revised consistent with the review of the current standards through the lens of the C3 Framework, other state standards, previous feedback on the current standards and benchmarks, and experience of the committee. The Standards Committee will delay, until the second draft, the full consideration of the following areas called for in the Assumptions: a. Contributions of Minnesota American Indian tribes and communities b. Refinement and alignment of benchmarks within the standards c. Technology and Information literacy Standards d. Computer science concepts and skills e. Alignment with Minnesota K-12 Academic Standards in ELA f. Full attention to issues of diversity and equity g. Balancing the specificity of the standards and benchmarks (“grain size”) h. Horizontal alignment within grade levels The Standards Committee will plan to add the following to the benchmarks in later drafts: further clarifications, connections to local contexts, and/or examples.
