Add suspense to your story to make it more interesting. 1. What does your character discover? What is the mystery? What is your character feeling and thinking about what has happened? Why does your character want/need to solve the mystery? 2. Does your character have a plan to solve the mystery? Will he or she be working alone or with a friend or 'sidekick'? If you introduce a new character, be sure to describe him or her. 3. Describe a clue your character finds. Is there more than one clue? Add suspense to your story by causing a roadblock or some type of trouble for you character. Think about other stories you are familiar with and how the characters have some type of setback before they reach the solution to the mystery.     Caitlin R. Donnelly. “That’s Just Like a Boy”: A Content Analysis of Masculinities in Hardy Boys Mystery Stories, 1927-1932. A Master’s Paper for the M.S. in L.S. degree. April 2008. 77 pages. Advisor: Brian Sturm This study is a content analysis of six Hardy Boys mystery stories from the 1920s and 1930s in order to explore what characteristics and expressions of masculinity are communicated as appropriate, desirable, and admirable. The study concludes that in the books surveyed, women are few in number and male characters are largely at liberty to decide their actions without interference or limitation; that Frank and Joe Hardy reflect all of the hallmarks of “real boys” as defined in the early twentieth century; and that the stories endorse an older model of Victorian masculinity that was falling out of favor while rejecting the newer standards that were replacing them.     The Cutting Edge, Vol 2, No 1 (2018) “It’s Elementary”: What Nancy Drew Reveals About Gender Construction Johnson Song Stanford University Abstract This article examines gender portrayal in children’s detective fiction and its implications for gender construction among children. Specifically, the author draws from excerpts from The Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew Mystery Stories, as well as references from Walt Disney films, to analyze how gender portrayal and expectations of characters are influenced by the genre and media in which they are presented. The article begins with a review of research on the role that early literature plays in shaping young children’s social understanding. It then considers the conventional depiction of women in detective fiction to establish the stereotypes that are broken by Nancy Drew’s emergence in the genre. It proceeds into an analysis of the portrayal of Nancy Drew and a critical comparison with the portrayal of several Disney princesses. Then, the article extends into an inspection of the audience and popular response to Nancy Drew, providing key insight to the greater social impact of women in the detective genre. Finally, the author remarks on what studying gender typification and depiction among children’s media can reveal about current discussions on femininity in the workplace, politics, athletics, and broader society.
