This past fortnight we were excited to launch a beautiful new video about Campion College, which can be viewed on our blog here. Another blog post drew attention to a terrific Daily Telegraph piece by Miranda Devine mentioning Campion graduates as perhaps “our best hope of turning back the culture of ugliness.” Speaking of beauty, Dr Ben Myers (United Theology College) spoke about St. Augustine’s use of melodic Psalms in City of God during the most recent Seminar in Political and Religious Life session, organised by Campion’s Centre for the Study of Western Tradition. Dr. Steve Chavura (Macquarie University) also gave an insightful address about multiculturalism and freedom of speech. The real beauty to talk about, though, was Campion’s performance in the Cardinal’s Cup! ...

Cardinal’s Cup Music Video On May 26 Campion competed alongside 15 other teams in the Cardinal’s Cup 5-vs-5 indoor soccer tournament held at the University of . In thrilling fashion, Campion advanced to the quarterfinals, which ended with a heart-pounding shoot-out. After first-year student Ben Uphill scored, second-year student Mark “Mack Truck” Makowiecki made not one but two heroic saves to set up his classmate Jacob Fulop for the final shot. In a clutch move Jacob sent the ball past the goalkeeper, sending Campion into the semi- finals! This is the stuff inspirational music videos are made of … in fact, our Strategic Relations Manager and Campion alum Michael Mendieta put together a video that you really must see! Click here to watch the 4-minute piece that features actual footage from Campion’s games. Although we didn’t make it to the finals, Robert van Gend and Jake Walsh and the whole team made a terrific showing. They even let me join in the bruising fun. I’m also proud that Campion alumni fielded a team—the only group of alums talented and dedicated enough to do so. This serves the whole Campion community very well. Thanks, alums, and thanks to all the students who came out to cheer both teams on!

Professing Faith On May 28th, I had the pleasure of taking a Profession of Faith and Oath of Fidelity to the teachings of the Church. Doing this in the presence of Bishop Anthony Fisher and Campion’s Board Chairman, Joe de Bruyn was a sign of our College’s Catholic identity and our commitment to the foundational truths of the Christian faith. I had hoped to make this profession during my inauguration, but the scheduling did not work out on that occasion. I’ve often said that there’s no such thing as a value-neutral (or even religiously-neutral) university when it comes to shaping character and worldview; the question is: Whose values and which ultimate commitments are being conveyed? My Profession and Oath make clear where Campion College stands on those questions: the claims contained in the word of God, summarised in the Nicene Creed and interpreted by the Church.

Talent Show I must make another profession: Campion students are extraordinarily talented! This was proved last Thursday when the Campion College Student Association held its annual Talent Night. The number of Campion students who excel in piano, guitar and vocals is downright impressive. I counted about 23 student- performers on the night. (Imagine how musical our society would be if the same percentage of Sydney Uni students demonstrated these skills!) I cannot mention all of them, but Robert van Gend and Marie Yeo (above left) played Kriesler’s “Praeludium and Allegro,” Sam Rebbechi, Peter O’Donovan, Josh Woolnough, Evelyn Ballard, and Johnny Walton (pictured at the bottom of the newsletter) performed the song “Little Talks,” and David Chilnicean and Brendan Smith (above centre) staged a hilarious skit as Shakespeare and his editor. Elyse Burns (above right) sang “I Dreamed a Dream” from Les Miserables, Campion style. Here’s a sample:

I dreamed a dream in time gone by when I had a social life worth living; I dreamed “O Week” would never die and lecturers would be forgiving.

Then I was young, and off caffeine, Redbull now made and used and wasted; There was no deadline to be seen Unreferenced source, or spark, un-noted…”

Special Form Hall This past Monday Campion celebrated a very special Mass and formal hall, marking the Feast of Corpus Christi. The Hon Kevin Andrews MP spoke at the dinner about his book Maybe ‘I Do’: Modern Marriage and the Pursuit of Happiness. We also awarded a Campion Medal to Miss Yvonne Nobbs, a dear friend and extremely generous benefactor of the College. And Chaplaincy Coordinator Jordan Grantham presented Fr Luke Holohan a gift from students expressing congratulations on his silver jubilee in the priesthood; we will miss Fr Holohan in Semester 2 while he is on his much-deserved sabbatical. This e-newsletter will take a short break as well while I travel overseas in June. We’ll be back in action in July. Please pray for our students as they complete their subjects and prepare for exams!
