This is a strategic commodity for which many Scountries have good agroecological conditions to produce it well. More than 750 million people in sub-Saharan Africa consume rice on daily basis - a demand that is growing at average rate of 6 percent per annum. Self-sufficiency in rice production is now a priority for many governments in Africa not only for food security but to stem the rising import bill.
