The design view, therefore, is a science-starter. Curiosity about this tree could lead to improved understanding of the genetic basis of its many benefits. Application of such findings could lead to global production for better nutrition, breeding of varieties for specialized purposes, and more ways to incorporate it into nutritious foods and drinks people enjoy. Even meat production might improve using Moringa as nutritious and easy- to-grow fodder for livestock. Third- world countries can get access to clean water. All that is needed are scientists like George Washington Carver to investigate the possibilities, like he did for peanuts and sweet potatoes, and then entrepreneurs to bring the benefits to MORINGA OLEIFERA the world. Food Production, World Hunger and Poverty Alleviation Agri-Heritage Tanzania Ltd. (short named AHT) is committed to develop multi-product agroforestry plantations using rapid afforestation projects focused on the intercropping of high yielding medicinal trees, plants and crops that provide staple foods, nutraceuticals, pharmaceuticals and abundant biomass energy for our community partners and the world markets. Creating local independent production capacity and restoring vast wastelands into agriculturally productive land is the only sustainable solution to ending world hunger and extreme poverty.

Despite substantial improvement in the control of malaria and decreased prevalence of malnutrition over the past two decades, both conditions remain heavy burdens that cause hundreds of thousands of deaths in children in resource-poor countries every year. Better understanding of the complex interactions between malaria and malnutrition is crucial for optimally targeting interventions where both conditions co-exist. This systematic review aimed to assess the evidence of the interplay between malaria and malnutrition.

Poverty is the greatest manmade ‘natural disaster’, and the easiest to solve using sustainable afforestation to return hydrological, nutrient and forest carbon cycles to their natural balance. The deforestation and ecosystem collapse in many regions of the world are the acts of man’s desperate search for energy, food and other natural resources needed for survival. The challenges of sustainable farming in arid and drought prone regions with degraded soil can now be overcome with some of the most productive and highest yielding trees and plants known in the plant kingdom. These fast-growing trees and plants are especially well suited to survival in dry, hot climates that are known to experience extreme droughts and weather uncertainty.

Moringa Oleifera – The Superfood to cure extreme poverty and world healing hunger

Moringa oleifera is often called the ‘Miracle Tree’ for its amazing properties and myriad health restoring benefits. Almost every part of the tree is used as a valuable food, with a vitamin, mineral and protein content that has no equal. Top endurance athletes are now discovering and secretly using Moringa mega-doses during training and before events to gain a natural edge over the competition. This nutritional powerhouse of the plant kingdom has been proven to stimulate rapid improvements in treating skin diseases, digestion, eyesight, glandular inflammations, mental clarity and immune system response. Moringa greatly reduces symptoms associated with fatigue, arthritis, and the effects of aging. Recorded in ancient texts on Indian Ayurveda medicine as early as 2,000 years B.C., Moringa is cited as treating over 300 diseases. The World Health Organization (WHO) has started to shift its treatment programs for the severely malnourished and breastfeeding mothers in Africa from the costly traditional western supplement program of whole milk powder, vegetable oil and sugar to Moringa leaf powder treatments with far superior results. Malnourished people respond in days with Moringa supplements rather than months from conventional western treatments. Moringa has amazing properties for preventing childhood blindness, a condition that develops from severe Vitamin A and Retinol deficiencies. 70% of childhood blindness is attributed to a lack of Vitamin A in the diet. The Helen Keller Foundation and the International Eye Foundation have now made Moringa the focus for preventing diet and nutrient based blindness. For children, just 3 teaspoons of Moringa leaf powder per day provide a 272% of the required Vitamin A, 42% of the protein and 125% of the calcium necessary for maintaining good health and vitality.

Moringa’s proven health benefits include:

❖ Moringa is among the power greens like spirulina, chlorella and wheat grass; ❖ Rich in minerals like calcium, iron, potassium, and . Gram for gram it contains more A, B and C vitamins than any other plant known, and has all the essential amino acids; ❖ Increases the body’s natural defenses; ❖ Provides vital nourishment to the eyes and the brain; ❖ Promotes the normal functioning and detoxification of the liver and the kidneys; ❖ Triggers metabolism and food nutrient absorption with highly bioavailable ingredients;

Moringa is an excellent source of iron, especially for vegetarians and women with iron poor blood, as it contains times (4x) the iron found in spinach and four times (4x) the protein found in soy, including all the amino acids and B vitamins found in meat. This superior source of protein creates a unique competitive advantage over traditional soy, milk caseinate, and egg white extract protein powders. Wholesale market prices for soy protein isolates, milk caseinate and egg white protein powders range from $7 to $12 per kg within the multi-billion-dollar health food supplement sector.

Moringa Superfood Production

Moringa offers food manufacturers a totally new source of protein with a completely new and unique set of functional properties that can replace animal-based or allergy causing food protein ingredients, such as egg whites, milk proteins, soy isolates and yeast proteins. AHT will focus on agroforestry exports of high profit margin superfoods, edible oils, protein powders, aromatics, and nutraceutical and pharmaceutical extracts to the following rapid growth green market segments:

Look deep into Nature, and then you will understand everything better. (Albert Einstein) [3]

❖ Nutritional beverages (Energy drinks, infant formulas, geriatric supplements, herbal teas, mineral water, therapeutic tonics, protein shakes); ❖ Dairy products (Moringa nutrient fortified milk, ice cream, cheese and yogurt); ❖ Non-Dairy (Moringa milk, ice cream, cheese, coffee creamers, butter, puddings and yogurts for allergy and lactose intolerant markets); ❖ Diabetic foods (Moringa protein powders and xylitol sweeteners); ❖ Weight Loss / Dietary foods and supplements (Moringa protein powders and xylitol sweeteners); ❖ Processed meat, sausage, hamburger blending (Moringa leaf powder); ❖ Vegetarian and vegan meat substitutes (texturized vegetable proteins for sandwich meats, sausages, burgers and poultry substitutes); ❖ Pastas and pizzas; ❖ Baked goods, breads, cakes, breakfast cereals; ❖ Sauces, dressings and condiments; ❖ Aromatics, flavorings, spices; ❖ Snack foods (energy bars, nutritional chocolates and candy);

AHT processing technologies for oilseed, leaf and botanical extracts are completely organic and preserve all of the plants most delicate micronutrients and complex co-vitamins that can be easily damaged by conventional high-temperature hexane solvent extraction, pasteurization, distillation or high-impact mechanical processes. The result of the Company’s cold CO2 extraction and gentle pharmaceutical grade micron milling is a superior functionality for maintaining food nutritional content and health benefits as well as enhancing the aroma, taste and texture of processed foods, including; fat absorption, emulsifying stability/capacity, foam stability, whip ability and water holding capacity. Moringa oleifera is our primary agroforestry crop because of almost every part of the tree is useful for food, and it is one of the highest yielding biomass producers, and fastest growing trees on the planet, capable of growing up to 7 meters in a single year. As a green , Moringa biomass residue will restore soil health and vitality by nutrients necessary for sustainable agriculture.

Moringa’s open canopy and soil building qualities make it the ideal tree for polyculture, intercropping and sustaining biodiversity. High-value essential oils and omega 3, 6, 9 fatty acid crops will be the primary plants for intercropping. Shade loving vegetables, medicinals, spices and aromatic plants will be part of polyculture intercropping based on local needs, market demand, downstream production opportunities and their suitability for yielding valuable plant extracts. Moringa offers an unparalleled opportunity for widespread commercial farming due to its adaptability to harsh climates, its rapid growth and multiple harvests of leaf, seed, and biomass. Most amazing is its flexibility in selecting leaf or oilseed planting modes depending on the primary products desired.

Moringa can be grown in ultra-high densities of up to 1,000,000 trees per hectare in maximum leaf growth mode, or if grown for maximum seed production mode, the planting density will only be 1,000 to 1,500 trees per hectare, thereby allowing for intercropping. Therefore, a one (1) hectare AHT Moringa Greenhouse Nursery planted in ultra-high density leaf growth mode (10cm x 10cm) will supply 6-8-month-old trees for 10,000 hectares for planting in Moringa seed growth mode. Moringa is easy to germinate and can be planted in the field when temperatures are consistently above 20 degrees Celsius. Moringa establishment and growth so is rapid that its leaves must be harvested every 33-45 days after planting, yielding up to 10 harvests per year of Moringa leaf. Moringa will flower and produce seeds in 6 to 8 months, providing one or two harvests per year.

AHT Moringa Nursery to Plantation Agroforestry Strategy is based on the Dutch high-tech flower/vegetable greenhouse model to expand the possible growing regions of Moringa from its traditional warm tropical climate to northern regions that stay above 20 degrees Celsius at least half of the year. This growing strategy will allow the Company to maximize Moringa leaf harvests in winter while ensuring our plantation and cooperative farming partners are supplied with the healthiest and most viable trees for field planting in spring. Moringa leaf is the most valuable part of the tree with numerous nutritional extracts and very high protein content. The increased greenhouse yields over field planting of Moringa leaf for fresh salads, protein powder, nutraceutical extracts and plant growth hormones harvested in winter months, even in the coldest northern climates, offers a highly profitable business model with low capital costs and substantially reduced risk of crop failure due to disease, pests or weather.

Year around greenhouse nursery production ensures turnkey supply chain management for our plantations and farming cooperative partners of elite trees, fertilizer and plant growth accelerators for stable operating

overhead, lower inputs and maximum harvest yields. As an example of greenhouse yield improvements over field-grown crops: Tomato yields for field grown crops average 32 metric tons per hectare each year, but greenhouse grown tomato yields can be as high as 482 metric tons per hectare. Charging greenhouses with CO2 and ensuring the perfect climate, lighting, water and nutrient delivery adds operating costs, but the increased yields and improved profit margins far outweigh the costs. Moringa oleifera yields for field grown green leafy matter have historically been in the range of 150 to 190 metric tons per hectare, and the Company expects similar yield improvements with greenhouse grown Moringa. The market price for bulk Moringa leaf powder is between $7-11 per kilogram compared to only $1.50 for tomatoes, and therefore greenhouse cultivation will substantially increase our return on investment.

AHT will produce the purest and most bioavailable protein powders, drinks and nutritional supplements using 100% organic farming and food processing. Native to India, Arabia, Africa and possibly the East Indies, Moringa has been widely cultivated and naturalized in tropical and semi-arid Africa, Central America, Mexico, India, Sri Lanka, Malaysia and the Philippines, but has remained little known to the Western World. In ancient Egypt, Greece, Roman and Arabian civilizations Moringa was highly cherished for its oil, food, therapeutic and water purifying effects. Moringa oleifera is the most common of the genus Moringaceae that has 13 known species. Moringa stenopetala, Moringa peregrina, Moringa drouhardii and Moringa hildebrandtii, and other rare Moringa species will also be cultivated and researched further as they show similar great promise. In India, Africa, Malaysia and the Philippines, the leaf, pod, seeds and roots are prepared in various dishes, as well as traditional medicines. In the Hawaiian Islands, us are known to grow Moringa around their homes for cooking, maintaining good health and in the preparation of traditional Philippine home remedies. In Malaysia, the seed is eaten as a snack, like peanuts. The leaf powder makes a delicious green tea with powerful detoxifying, energy restoring and immune system boosting effects. The young green pods are considered a delicacy in India and are now found canned in a growing number of Asian food stores worldwide.

The seeds provide an edible oil superior to virgin cold pressed olive oil in nutritional content, and with a much longer shelf life. Moringa is far better for cooking than olive oil as it resists oxidation and polymerization at high temperatures. Tests have shown that Moringa will last 80 hours at 100 Celsius with no oxidation, compared to Olive oil lasting only 40 hours. In addition, Moringa oil extracted from the leaf and the seed contains valuable phytochemicals called sterols that lower bad cholesterol. These valuable phytochemicals in oils are usually destroyed by heat or damaging chemical solvents used during traditional oil extraction processes. The Company’s next generation oil extraction and protein purification process also creates a superior protein isolate with higher amino acid profiles, nutritional value and superior functionality for food manufacturers. Moringa has one of the highest oil yields per hectare of all edible oils. The seeds yield 35–40% non-drying oil, commonly known in India as ‘Ben Oil’. The oil has been used in arts and for lubricating watches and other delicate machinery. Moringa oil is clear, sweet, odorless, and never becomes rancid. It is therefore highly prized as both a salad and cooking oil, as well as in the manufacture of soaps, perfumes, cosmetics, haircare and other skin and beauty care products. The seed press cake remaining after extracting the oil and other valuable nutraceutical compounds is about 60% protein, and can be used as a source for protein isolates. The delicate protein molecules are preserved in tact in the oil extraction process and offer superior taste, texture and functionality for food processing applications. Seed press cake can also be used for animal feed, purifying water, fertilizer, biomass pellet fuel or steam reforming into green fuels and chemicals.

The seed powder has a unique Phyto cationic property that binds to toxics and bacteria. Studies at the University of Leicester in the UK have proven that Moringa seed powder purifies water as effectively as aluminum silica or activated carbon. It is presumed that this same detoxifying effect is taking place within the body. The easiest and most rapid products to introduce to the world markets may be Moringa Oil, Moringa Leaf Powder and Moringa Leaf Salads, with their pleasant and mild taste being readily accepted, and with minimal processing and few barriers to market entry. The happy outcome of adding Moringa to the diet is more sustained energy without anxious over-activity, a balanced hormone and gland system, controlled blood pressure, and a nervous system at rest. Moringa leaf has no proven bad effects and is absolutely safe and organic.

Nutraceutical and Pharmaceutical Botanical Extracts

Moringa highest absorption emission

The Moringa tree, therefore, will be a useful tool in the prevention of global warming in that: One (1) moringa tree will be equivalent to the effectiveness of fifty (50) Japanese cedar trees in absorbing carbon dioxide (Villafuerte, and Villafurte-Abonal 2009). For example, if we expanded Moringa from one hundred thousand (100,000) hectares worldwide to one million (1,000,000) hectares, that would equate to five (5) gigatons of CO2e being sequestered.

The rate of absorption or assimilation of carbon dioxide by the Moringa tree is twenty times (20x) higher than any other tree. Moringa highest absorption carbon dioxide emission. Study on Moringa and global warming revealed that 1 person emits 320kg of CO2/yr, it takes 23 Japanese Cedar trees takes 50 years to absorb this amount of CO2; it takes 2 Moringa trees 2 years to absorb this amount and 1 family car emits 2300kg of CO2/yr, it takes 160 Japanese Cedar trees 50 years to absorb this amount of CO2, it takes 10 Moringa trees 2 years etc (Muriel, 2010).

Advancing the Science of Climate Change

A strong, credible body of scientific evidence shows that climate change is occurring, is caused largely by human activities, and poses significant risks for a broad range of human and natural systems, concludes this panel report from America’s Climate Choices suite of studies. As decision-makers respond to these risks, the nation’s scientific enterprise can contribute both by continuing to improve understanding of the causes and consequences of climate change, and by improving and expanding the options available to limit the magnitude of climate change and adapt to its impacts.

To make this possible, the nation needs a comprehensive, integrated, and flexible climate change research enterprise that is closely linked with action-oriented programs at all levels.
