Dear Parents, It seems impossible that we are already in the month of December. Thank you for all that you have done this year to make it a true partnership between home and school. We have been lucky to have had such nice weather through November, but the inclement weather is approaching. Please see page two of our newsletter to discover the many ways you can receive notices for inclement weather delays, cancellations, or any school emergency. Txtwire is especially helpful. There is a great Delay/Cancellation FAQ link on the Linn-Mar homepage. Please know how much we appreciate the gifts your children share with us each day. We are extremely fortunate to have students who are so kind and helpful and do their best each and every day. The ornaments on this page represent our giving tree slips that you are graciously taking to fulfill the dreams and wishes of many families. Your dedication to our outreach efforts this year continue to astonish us. Please know there will be an opportunity each month to participate in helping out our community or our own families. We know you cannot participate in everything. Our focus for January will be a book drive for local agencies. In February, we are planning a fun baby goods project. Look for monthly notes. Once again, we are grateful for all the support you give to your children to help with schoolwork and school projects. It makes a tremendous difference. Please know that you are always welcome at school. Have a wonderful holiday season! Mrs. March and the staff at Bowman Woods Inclement Weather If severe weather, including fog, forces a late arrival, early dismissal, or cancellation of school for the entire day, announcements will be made on: District website banner – www.linnmar.k12.ia.us District Facebook page as status update (“like” Linn-Mar Community Schools on Facebook) Txtwire – click on LM Emergency Notifications at the bottom of the LM webpage to register TV Stations: KCRG, KFXA, KGAN, KWWL Radio Stations: KCCK, KHAK, KKRQ, KMRY, KZIA, WMT Unless you see an announcement, assume school is running as usual. If we have late arrival: - Watch for our sign out front! School will start at 10:30a.m. All before school activities are cancelled If we have an early dismissal: Early dismissals are announced the same way that late arrivals/school closings are announced. We would encourage folks to sign up for the Txtwire alert. The school does not have the means to call parents to notify them that school is dismissing early. Please make sure that the school knows where your child should go in case of an early dismissal. It’s important that your child also knows where he or she needs to go. Thank you for your help with this. All after school activities at Bowman are cancelled. Before/After School Care will open at regular time and will begin immediately after school dismisses if any of the above occurs. Winter Weather Dress Students should be dressed appropriately for the weather. If there is snow on the ground, students should wear snow pants. If there is not snow on the ground, students do not have to wear snow pants. While it is snowy and muddy, students who wish to play in the playground area must wear boots. Students who do not have boots may play on the blacktop. However, in the event that the blacktop is covered in snow, boots will be needed. If your child needs winter gear, please contact Mrs. Wiley at 447- 3244 or Ms. Lawrence at 447-3208 as soon as possible. Indoor/Outdoor Recess In the event of rain or when the temperature reaches below zero, students will have indoor recess. The office staff will monitor the temperature according to KCRG TV 9. IF YOU ARE PLANNING ON HAVING LUNCH WITH YOUR STUDENT, OR IF YOUR CHILD WILL BE ABSENT FROM SCHOOL, PLEASE CALL MRS. MATTHEWS AT 447-3242. LUNCH ORDERS MUST BE PLACED BY 9:00 AM. From our Veteran’s Day Assembly……. Our Veteran’s Day Assembly was powerful and compelling. Thanks to Mr. Makinster and Miss Morosky for providing the inspirational music and program, the members of the American Legion Marion Post 298 and to our families for sending in the photos of their loved ones who have served or are currently serving our country. Thank you to those brave men and women. Redemption News As of November 1st, Bowman Woods turned in over $600 worth of Box Tops since the beginning of the school year. That is over 6000 Box Tops! Combining what was turned in at the end May last school year, our school will be receiving a check from Box Tops for Education for around $1300 in late December. Strong work, Bowman Woods! 10 cents does add up! The Box Top and Hy- Vee receipt homeroom collection contest continues. The first three homerooms who catch all the Pokémon characters on the lunchroom bulletin board will win a hot chocolate break in their rooms. Don’t forget to bring in Hy-Vee receipts too. If friends and family shop at any of the Cedar Rapids/Marion Hy-Vee food or drugstores, ask them to save their receipts for you. As always, thanks for your support. Another way to help our school at no cost to you: If you do any of your shopping online, please consider Amazon Smile. It is operated by Amazon and lets customers enjoy the same wide selection of products, low prices, and convenient shopping features as on Amazon.com. The difference is that when customers shop on AmazonSmile (smile.amazon.com), the AmazonSmile Foundation will donate 0.5% of the price of eligible purchases to the charitable organizations selected by customers. Select Bowman Woods PTO when you register. News from Mrs. Wiley’s Office Hello Bowman Woods Families. What a gorgeous late fall we are having. It’s hard to believe that the holidays are just around the corner with such gorgeous weather. Hope you all had a nice Thanksgiving break with family and friends! Giving Tree Each year the Bowman Woods family has a Giving Tree. This Giving Tree program supports many families in our building. The Giving Tree will be up in the main office beginning November 21st and will remain up until December 14th. Please stop in and take a tag or two to help support families during the holidays. Mrs. Matthews will have a recording sheet for you to record the tag number. All gifts will need to be delivered to Bowman Woods UNWRAPPED with Giving Tree tag ATTACHED, no later than 16th. If you have any questions about the Giving Tree program, contact Mrs. Wiley. [email protected] Student Ambassadors New this year, the fifth graders are able to participate in the Student Ambassadors program. This program provides leadership opportunities throughout the school year. Every 4-6 weeks the ambassadors rotate and when their month comes around they are responsible for things like helping kindergarten students with their winter gear at recess times, collecting lunch money, box tops, and ROAR slips for each classroom, keeping the playground carts clean and organized, setting up for school wide assemblies, helping tour new students around the school, planning school wide activities for PBIS, leading Red Ribbon Week, Kindness Week, and other school wide activities, and much more. Fifth graders applied early this fall and were placed in groups of 5-7 students to serve different months throughout the year. The first group of ambassadors has been doing a great job and they really seem to enjoy it. Winter Gear If your child is in need of a hat or mittens for winter please email Mrs. Wiley at [email protected] WHERE IS YOUR NEW SHIRT? WHAT DID YOU DO WITH YOUR RED SWEATHSHIRT? Having this conversation with your child? Please remember to check the lost and found area in our lunchroom to see if your child has an article of clothing that has been left behind. Thank you. If there is a change for pick up at the end of the day, please notify the teacher along with the office staff (447-3242) or [email protected] and [email protected] so that everyone is aware of the change. We cannot allow someone to pick up your student if we do not receive a phone call or have the person listed in Powerschool. Our Thanksgiving Turkey feathers were created by buddy classrooms and assembled by Mrs. Decious. The students wrote what each was thankful for on the feathers. Thank you, Becky, for your outstanding creativity. It is beautiful! Linn-Mar School Foundation Happenings Smart Money, the Annual Fund for Linn-Mar campaign is underway!
