DOI: 10.2298/FID1504830K Original scientific article Received: 25.11.2105 — Accepted: 4.12.2105 Zdravko Kobe True Sacrifice On Hegel’s Presentation of Self-Consciousness Abstract The paper provides a modest reading of Hegel’s treatment of self- consciousness in his Phenomenology of Spirit and tries to present it as an integral part of the overall project of the experience of consciousness leading from understanding to reason. Its immediate objective is, it is argued, to think the independence and dependence, that is the pure and empirical I within the same unity of self-consciousness. This implies a double movement of finding a proper existence for the pure I and at the same time a breaking down of the empirical I’s attachment to particularity. It is argued that the Hegelian strug- gle for recognition intends to show how the access to reason demands the subject’s renunciation of its attachment to particularity, that is to sacrifice not only its bare life but every thing indeed, including its particular identity, 830 and yet, to go on living. IS THE RIGHT TO LIFE OR IS ANOTHER RIGHT THE MOST FUNDAMENTAL HUMAN RIGHT – THE “URGRUNDRECHT”?: HUMAN DIGNITY, MORAL OBLIGATIONS, NATURAL RIGHTS, AND POSITIVE LAW Josef Seifert Abstract: Moral obligations and basic human rights must be distinguished from each other and from positive rights and laws. Ethics and basic human rights rest on human dignity. The right to life is shown to be a natural and “absolute right,” but it is also in a certain sense the absolutely foundational concrete human right (Urgrundrecht) grounded in ontological dignity: all other human rights presuppose necessarily human life while human life has no more fundamental foundation in other goods but constitutes their ground. Other ideas about the most foundational right (such as the habeas corpus) are less foundational for the reason that they are more insignificant, can be suspended, are not immune to emergency states, such that their violation is not under all circumstances a grave violation. Moreover, they presuppose the right to life. These rights also refer only to a small sector of humanity, not applying to babies or comatose patients. The right to life is held by all human beings without exception, it is unrenounceable. For these and many other reasons the right to life is in an important sense the most fundamental right, in accordance with the first point of view for determining which is the most basic human right: Which right refers to the most basic good that is the condition of all others? However, there are two other points of view to determine the most basic right: The second point of view is expressed in the question: “Which human right is the most universal and comprehensive one and includes all others?” This is not true of the right to life which does not say anything about any other right. -

In this way form was marginalized, and with it the related notion of the object. Noah Roderick’s book is a refreshing effort to reverse the consequences of this now banal mainstream materialism. Ranging from physics through literature to linguistics, spanning philosophy from East to West, and weaving it all together in remarkably lucid prose, Roderick intro- duces a new concept of analogy that sheds unfamiliar light on such thinkers as Marx, Deleuze, Goodman, Sellars, and Foucault. More than a literary device, analogy teaches us something about being itself. Wrathall (UC Riverside) Dissertation Abstract: Hubert Dreyfus has claimed that our situated, skillful and embodied engagement with the world (skillful coping) is an intentional, personal-level phenomena that serves as a ground for conceptual activity. John McDowell has responded by claiming that skillful coping is pervasively conceptual and by dismissing the relevance of the normative phenomena to which Dreyfus calls attention. I argue that a more careful analysis of both reflective and unreflective experience reveals that possessing conceptual capacities—no less than possessing skillful, action-oriented bodies— changes the nature and content of perception. Consequently, while Dreyfus is right to insist on the relevance of our skillful and unreflective bodily practices, he misunderstands the relationship between coping and language specifically, and hence between coping and conceptuality more generally. The New Socio-Cultural Paradigms and the Role of Jesuit Universities Card. GIANFRANCO RAVASI A PREMISE The very word “university” philologically implies the task of embracing the “universe” of knowledge we are immersed in, and the quest to lead a great variety of knowledges into a “unity.” So universities, with their various faculties, departments, institutions, laboratories and so on, must always be careful to look both to the great heritage of the past and to the present time with its cultural paradigm shifts. We wish, here, to raise two different issues from a methodological point of view. The first is particularly significant within the horizon of the Jesuit universities. In a speech to the Roman Curia on December 22, 2016, Pope Francis proposed an “ancient saying that illustrates the dynamics of the Ignatian Spiritual Exercises, that is: deformata reformare, reformata conformare, conformata confirmare, confirmata transformare.” It is clear that there is a need for evolution and continuity in this process, for a dialogue with the past and an encounter with the present, for dialectics but also continuity, for changeable complexity and a basic single project. This is something raised by another voice – that of a personality quite different from Pope Francis – who based himself on the contemporary situation. Just before he died in 2011, Steve Jobs, the acclaimed founder of “Apple,” made a declaration that can be taken as his ideal testament: “Technology alone is not 2 enough. It’s technology married with liberal arts, married with the humanities, that yields us the results that make our hearts sing.” Practically, this was the symbolic synthesis of one of his earlier speeches, given June 12, 2005, at the university of Harvard. -

This fact is not only part of every personal experience, but it is also a starting point for every (philosophical) anthropology. For example, according to Max Scheler, man is the ‘X that can behave in a world-open manner to an unlimited extent’;1 according to Helmut Plessner, man is characterised by an ‘eccentric positionality’,2 whereby his eccentric exis- tence, which possesses no fixed centre, is described as the unity of medi- ated immediacy and natural artificiality. Accordingly, Plessner formulates three fundamental laws of anthropology: (1) the Law of Natural Artificiality, (2) the Law of Mediated Immediacy, and (3) the Law of the Utopian Standpoint.3 Similarly, Arnold Gehlen states the thesis that man is by nature a cultural being,4 whereby his cultural achievements are seen as compensation for organs and man is defined as a creature of defect (Mängelwesen).5 For Friedrich Nietzsche, man is the not-yet-determined animal,6 whereby science too is seen as the expression of human endeav- 1 M. Despite the importance in and impact on women’s lives, chastity has been understated in religio-philosophical fields. The two philosophers’ understandings and arguments differ in significant ways and yet share important common aspects. Analyzing the views of Song and Hume helps us better understand and approach the issue of women’s chastity, not only as a historical phenomenon but also in the contemporary world, more fully and deeply. Introduction Chastity, understood as a commitment or disposition to remain innocent of extramarital sexual intercourse, has been considered a virtue among human beings for a long time, not only in traditional societies but in contemporary societies as well.1 The value of chastity has been recognized since very early times and regardless of geographical location; it was an important virtue in ancient Greece and China, for example. This duty of chastity remains widespread in contemporary societies, which, in general, take monogamy as the moral standard regarding intimate human relationships. In a number of countries, the violation of chastity is recognized as unlawful and has consequences within the penal system.2 The virtue of chastity, however, has been discussed one-sidedly and almost always as “female” chastity. -

Inquiry, 47, 380–412 Ontology and Ethics at the Intersection of Phenomenology and Environmental Philosophy* Iain Thomson University of New Mexico The idea inspiring the eco-phenomenological movement is that phenomenology can help remedy our environmental crisis by uprooting and replacing environmentally- destructive ethical and metaphysical presuppositions inherited from modern philosophy. Eco-phenomenology’s critiques of subject/object dualism and the fact/value divide are sketched and its positive alternatives examined. Two competing approaches are discerned within the eco-phenomenological movement: Nietzscheans and Husserlians propose a naturalistic ethical realism in which good and bad are ultimately matters of fact, and values should be grounded in these proto- ethical facts; Heideggerians and Levinasians articulate a transcendental ethical realism according to which we discover what really matters when we are appropriately open to the environment, but what we thereby discover is a transcendental source of meaning that cannot be reduced to facts, values, or entities of any kind. These two species of ethical realism generate different kinds of ethical perfectionism: naturalistic ethical realism yields an eco-centric perfectionism which stresses the flourishing of life in general; transcendental ethical realism leads to a more ‘humanistic’ perfectionism which emphasizes the cultivation of distinctive traits of Dasein. Both approaches are examined, and the Heideggerian strand of the humanistic approach defended, since it approaches the best elements of the eco-centric view while avoiding its problematic ontological assumptions and anti-humanistic implications.
