CORE VALUES 3 Annual Report 2018-19 CHANCELLOR'S MESSAGE I am extremely delighted to present the Sixteenth Annual Report of UPES. UPES, as always, continues to be the destination campus of choice for students and their parents. This year UPES has taken further initiatives towards development and training as well as the academia-industry interface. UPES organized the 17th Annual Convocation at the Energy Acres Campus in Dehradun on 30th November 2019 with the Vice President of India Shri M. Venkaiah Naidu as the Chief Guest, the Uttarakhand Governor Hon'ble Baby Rani Maurya as the Presiding Chair Person, Chief Minister of Uttarakhand Hon'ble Shri Trivendra Singh Rawat as the Guest of H o n o r a n d t h e M i n i s te r o f S t a te H i g h e r Ed u c a t i o n Dr. Dhan Singh Rawat as the Distinguished Guest. I am glad to inform that UPES is now certified as a “Great Place to Work” (GPTW). This is recognized as the Gold Standard for defining great workplace across business, academia and government organizations. The Certification methodology involves comparison of work culture with competitors, commitment to employees about improving workplace culture, projecting the Brand externally, attract and retain talent, trust levels between the organization and the employees and the employee's perception of various HR initiatives. The University has also embarked upon various processes to go f rom “Good to Great” Academic Institute. This involves initiatives for Academic Excellence, Brand Development, Societal Impact, Student Outcomes and Experience, People First etc. As part of the People First initiatives, the HR has initiated various personal development programs like PGCAP, Shakti, Unnati, Pragati, Aarambh, Urja, Protsahan, Manthan and Baton Baton Mein, etc. UPES, this year, has also successfully launched the School of Health Sciences and is now embarking upon ‘School of Smart Agriculture’ as well as ‘School of Modern Media’. UPES as part of its Industry-academia interface continues to vigorously pursue alliances with industry and make its offerings contemporary and more industry friendly. UPES continued to receive Awards for excellence this year as well and would like to express its gratitude to the Governor of Uttarakhand, Hon'ble Baby Rani Maurya, the Visitor to the University and the distinguished Members of our Boards for their continued guidance and support. We also appreciate the continued support of the Government of Uttarakhand and members of our statutory boards. We assure all our stakeholders our deep commitment to develop UPES as a world class institution. Dr. S. J. CHOPRA Chancellor 4 Annual Report 2018-19 VICE CHANCELLOR'S MESSAGE I am excited and honoured to present the Annual Report 2018-19 of UPES. It was an eventful year with many milestones and achievements on various f ronts. At the outset, I offer my heartiest congratulations to every member of the UPES family for their hard work and brilliant performance. The 17th convocation of the University was held on November 30, 2019 and graced by Shri. M. Vekaiah Naidu, Hon'ble Vice President of India, Smt. Baby Rani Maurya - Hon'ble G o v e r n o r , U t t a r a k h a n d a n d V i s i t o r , U P E S , H o n ' b l e Shri Trivendra Singh Rawat- Chief Minister, Uttarakhand and Hon'ble Dr. Dhan Singh Rawat - Minister of State, Higher Education, Uttarakhand. 27 candidates were awarded PhD degrees, 2 candidates were awarded PhD Higher Doctorate, 3028 students were awarded graduate and postgraduate degrees in various disciplines, and 684 degrees were awarded to students of Centre for Continuing Education. 13 Gold medals and 70 Silver medals were awarded to students of different disciplines based on their academic merit. In 2018, Uttarakhand government granted the University, an expansion of its charter under the 'University of Petroleum and Energy Studies (Amendment) Act, 2018. As part of the charter expansion, UPES is now entrusted with the responsibility to provide education and conduct research in areas like Humanities, Social Science, Natural Science, Engineering Technology, Medical, Dental & Health Science, Law Studies and Formal Science. As part of the charter expansion, UPES opened its sixth school- School of Health Sciences. UPES received various awards and recognitions in 2018-19. It received accreditation by National Board of Accreditation (NBA) for Automotive Design Engineering program and Chemical Engineering (Specialization: Refining and Petrochemicals) program. Dr. S. J. Chopra, Chancellor, UPES was awarded the much deserved ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ for his contribution in the field of education by MIT Pune. UPES also received 'Leading University for International Student Experience' award at the UniAgents Annual Summit 2019. Like every year, the students of UPES participated in various national and international competitions and won laurels for the University. While it is difficult to mention all these, many congratulations to our students for their brilliance and competitive spirit. At the forefront of academic excellence are our 600 faculty members, who are not just teachers and subject matter experts, but also mentors to our students. I would like to congratulate and thank them for their unwavering commitment and individual feats. UPES established a Research Centre on ‘Science for Society’ to facilitate interdisciplinary research projects focussing on societal issues. UPES developed more than 70-patented technologies for various applications such as pollution monitoring, early landslide detection, health monitoring devices, air pressure controlling systems in the vehicle to avoid accidents, etc. Technology for greywater treatment has been successfully developed with support f rom 5 Annual Report 2018-19 Department of Science and Technology that may reuse up to 1.3 lakh litre water in a month. We have successfully utilized solar energy for converting bio-waste into fuel. UPES is actively involved in research on water mills in villages of Uttarakhand. UPES Researchers published more than 1700 articles and research work conducted in UPES has more than 6500 (Scopus) citations by national and international researchers. The year 2019 was the Year of Internationality at UPES. From
