Rightfully Yours, was an intellectually thrilling and politically provocative exhibition mounted by young curator Tejpal Singh Ajji. Through a wide range of Canadian and international performance-based work—very broadly defined — he created a labo ratory to consider how artists insert themselves into a contemporary world wracked by conflicts over terri tory and identity, investigating what rights they—or any of us— have to legitimately take on and occupy others' positions. Artists here are pro ductively framed as invaders, re- invigorating debates over cultural trespass and appropriation while never losing sight of the potent plea sures that come with transgressions of symbolic and actual property, of insider and outsider knowledges.

Organized by Hamza Walker, Curator and Director of Education at the Renaissance Society at the University of Chicago, the show includes forty-three works reflecting a variety of genres and approaches, ranging from autobiographical and documentary to surreal fantasy and experimental formalism. The works are divided up and presented as five discrete programs focusing on different themes--such as the residual resonances of war, ethnic tensions, and issues of national identity--or common sensibilities, such as a self-deprecating humor that relates to anxieties about joining the European Union. New Video, New Europe will be on view from May 31 – June 30, 2006 at The Kitchen (512 West 19th Street). The Kitchen’s gallery hours are Tuesday-Friday, 12 to 6pm and Saturday, 11am to 7pm. Admission is Free. Also, on Monday June 12 at 7pm there will be a public panel discussion with curator Hamza Walker and three participating artists in New Video, New Europe: Ki’wa, Dan Mihaltianu, and Egle Rakaukaite. Admission is free. Taken as a whole, the exhibition reveals the proliferation of video production by artists throughout the region, despite varying levels of development in particular countries.

BENVENUTO! SISLEJ XHAFA A major retrospective devoted to an ironic, subversive artist who draws inspiration from the complexity and contradictions of reality on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the birth of the Italian Republic 2 June – 2 October 2016 Thursday 2 June 2016, 6:00 PM | AGAIN AND AGAIN Performance by Sislej Xhafa with the Orchestra d’archi Roma Sinfonietta MAXXI Gallery 1 | admittance with museum entrance ticket www.fondazionemaxxi.it Reality is stronger than art. As an artist I do not want to reflect a reality, But I do want to question it. Sislej Xhafa Rome 1 June 2016. Sislej Xhafa has furnished the waiting room of a police station in Gent like a grand palace. He presented a clandestine Albanian pavilion at the Venice Biennale and has used the Ljubljana train station as if it were a stock exchange selling wishes and hopes to people instead of shares: he is an artist who draws inspiration from the complexity of social relations to whom MAXXI is dedicating the exhibition BENVENUTO! Sislej Xhafa, curated by Hou Hanru and Luigia Lonardelli from 2 June to 2 October 2016. The exhibition comprises about 30 works, spanning his career from the 1990s through to the present, including a new work the artist has created especially for this show. MAXXI is presenting the full range of his artistic output that draws inspiration from the contradictions of contemporary reality. The exhibition’s title is taken from the major installation created by the artist in 2000 within the ambit of the Arte all’Arte project in the Casole d’Elsa hills near Siena.

  • Sislej Xhafa (B.1970 Peja, Kosova) Is Known for Works That Could Be
Sislej Xhafa (b.1970 Peja, Kosova) is known for works that could be described as ‘actions’ or conceptual strategies which challenge cultural stereotypes, preconceived prejudices and institutional structures. Often exploring the modes through which contemporary society functions, he investigates social, economic and political realities to ultimately critique consumerism and its driving mechanisms. The artist once stated: ‘Reality is stronger than art. As an artist I do not want to reflect a reality but I do want to question it. My social upbringing does not embrace rational linear actions. I approach the world and life with primal instinctive behaviour’. Working in a variety of media from painting and drawing to sculpture and installation, his engagement with political dimensions is always indirect and implied, reflecting on social norms and strategies and the ways in which they are unconsciously manipulated. Topics investigated by the artist include the processes of tourism, forced illegality, the deconstruction of mythologies, the concept of nationality and denial of the right to vote. Xhafa’s works employ a conceptual language and are simultaneously ironic, humorous and subversive. Indeed, the tangible social results of economic theories are at the heart of Sislej Xhafa’s artistic research, questioning the legal status of his country of origin, Kosovo. In 1997, presenting himself as the Clandestine Pavilion at the Venice Biennale, the artist wandered around the gardens of the Biennale kicking a football, dressed as a member of the national Albanian team, carrying a small Albanian flag and a recorder that broadcast an Italy-Albania football match. One critic described how: ‘It’s a politics of interruption, upsetting the configuration of forces determining what is visible and what is not, what forms of speech are understood as discourse and which are only perceptible as noise, who is designated as a speaking subject and who is merely spoken to.’ Sislej Xhafa represented the Republic of Kosovo at the Venice Biennale 2017.

  • Pavilion of the Republic of Kosovo at the 58Th International Art Exhibition – La Biennale Di Venezia PRESS RELEASE Artist
Pavilion of the Republic of Kosovo at the 58th International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia PRESS RELEASE Artist: Alban Muja Curator: Vincent Honoré Assistant Curator: Anya Harrison Commissioner: Arta Agani - Director of The National Gallery of Kosovo Organization: The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports of the Republic of Kosovo Venue: Arsenale (Sale d’Armi), Venice Press and VIP opening: Thursday 9 May, 2pm The Republic of Kosovo is taking part for the fourth time in the 58th International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia with a major solo exhibition of new work by Alban Muja, opening on 11 May 2019 and running through to 24 November 2019. The Kosovo Pavilion will be curated by Vincent Honoré, Director of Exhibitions at Montpellier Contemporain (MoCo), and the presentation will take place in the Arsenale. Muja’s work, which takes the form of video installation, short films and documentaries, drawing, painting and performance, is largely influenced by the ongoing processes of social, political and economic transformation in his native Kosovo and across the wider region of the Balkans.
