Tripp Davis' Renovation at Oak Tree National Sets the Stage for U.S Tripp Davis’ Renovation at Oak Tree National Sets the Stage for U.S. Senior Open Norman, OK (June 24, 2014)— When the greatest senior golfers in the world gather in two weeks for the 2014 U.S. Senior Open at Oak Tree National in Edmond, Oklahoma, they will be testing their game on one of Pete Dye’s best courses, thanks to the recent renovation work by Tripp Davis and Associates. “The golf course at Oak Tree National went through a variety of design changes over the years since Pete first designed it,” said Davis. “We were brought in to regain the best of its original Pete Dye character and we think the pros will be very pleased with the final outcome.” Davis and his team worked to return the features of the course to its original form adding a few enhancements for the modern game. All tees and bunkers were rebuilt and strategically restored. 18th hole “The greens and greens surrounds were what made Oak Tree so strategic and we like what we recaptured,” commented Davis who credits Scott Verplank, Bob Tway, Willie Wood, club owner, Everett Dobson and project shaper Bill “Hollywood” Willingham as part of the team who provided ongoing input on changes throughout the course. “It can still be the toughest course in the country, but it is very strategic and option oriented,” said the former All-American from Oklahoma University. The 2014 U.S. Senior Open will be the second USGA Championship to be played at Oak Tree National. The club previously hosted the 1984 U.S. Amateur, the 1988 PGA Championship, the 2000 Club Pro Championship, and the 2006 Senior PGA Championship. Media Contact: On Course Strategies 203-454-0232 .

A Chronicle of the Philadelphia Section PGA and its Members by Peter C. Trenham 1980 to 1989 1980 The Section had another first as the new Senior PGA Tour held its first event at the Atlantic City CC in June. 1981 Dick Smith, Sr. won the 60 th Philadelphia PGA Section Championship at the Cavaliers Country Club in October. 1982 Dick Smith, Sr. won his fourth Philadelphia PGA Section Championship at Huntingdon Valley C.C. in September. 1983 Charlie Bolling won the South African Open in late January. 1984 Rick Osberg tied for third in the PGA Club Professional Championship in October. 1985 Ed Dougherty won the PGA Club Professional Championship in October. 1986 In December Dick Smith, Sr. was elected secretary of the PGA of America at the national meeting in Indianapolis. 1987 The Philadelphia pros defeated the Middle Atlantic Section to make it 12 wins for Philadelphia against 6 losses. 1988 The Philadelphia PGA Section Championship prize money was $100,000 for the first time. 1989 In April Jimmy Booros won on the PGA Tour at the Deposit Guaranty Golf Classic. 1980 A new decade began with golf booming. The PGA Tour purses were rapidly increasing and most of the tournaments were televised. There were concerns that there was too much golf being shown on TV. Playing the PGA Tour was a distant thought for most club pros. People were retiring earlier and more women were taking up the game so the rounds of golf were in- creasing each year. Senior golf was becoming very popular and the Phila- delphia Section was in on another first, as the Atlantic City Country Club would host the first official tournament of the new Senior PGA Tour.

  • Clutch Strokes: Performance Under Pressure in Golf
COLLEGE OF THE HOLY CROSS Clutch Strokes: Performance Under Pressure in Golf Jeffrey Paadre This paper examines 10 years worth of PGA Tour Tournament data in order to examine whether or not clutch performance exists during the final round of a tournament. After controlling scores for differences in course difficulty, the paper finds no evidence of tangible clutch performance. The authors find that the perception of clutch performance is more likely attributable to talent differential between golfers. Assuming a normal distribution of golfer talent, it is possible that Tiger Woods can outshoot his opponents on the final day of a tournament as well as lose his lead to his competitors. Motivation and Literature In professional sports, heroes can be created through the concept of clutch performance. The perception of clutch performance occurs when an athlete raises his or her performance to an extraordinary level during the most important moments of a sporting event. Athletes such as David Ortiz and Adam Vinatieri have been immortalized as legends due to their consistent ability to help their teams win baseball and football games during important games where the outcome was hanging in the balance. Conversely Bill Buckner and Scott Norwood are amongst the unfortunate athletes burdened with reputations as choke artists based on their inability to perform well when their teams needed a high performance the most. One of the challenges that accompanies examining performance under pressure lies within trying to define which performances constitute clutch performance. For example, in 2005 John Henry, the owner of the Boston Red Sox, presented David Ortiz with a plaque inscribed “David Ortiz: The Greatest Clutch Hitter in the History of the Boston Red Sox”.

2017 U.S. SENIOR OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP NOTES • The 38th United States Senior Open Championship will be played at Salem Country Club in Peabody, Massachusetts from June 26-July 2, 2017. The course will be set up at 6,815 yards and will play to a par- 70 (35-35). Salem Country Club was designed by Donald Ross. The club opened in 1925 and from its humble initiatives evolved one of America’s great courses, deemed one of architect Ross’ finest creations, and anchored by a classic colonial clubhouse. • Salem Country Club will be hosting the prestigious U.S. Senior Open for the second time. It also served as host in 2001 when Bruce Fleisher prevailed by one stroke over Gil Morgan and Isao Aoki. In addition to the U.S. Senior Open, the club also hosted the 1932 U.S. Women’s Amateur (Virginia Van Wie), the 1954 U.S. Women’s Open (Babe Didrickson Zaharias), the 1977 U.S. Senior Amateur (Dale Morey), and the 1984 U.S. Women’s Open (Hollis Stacy). • PGA TOUR Champions is certainly no stranger to the Boston area. The Tour also played the Constellation SENIOR PLAYERS Championship at Belmont CC in 2015 where Bernhard Langer won the second of three consecutive titles in that event. • With his recent victory in the KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship near the nation’s capital, World Golf Hall of Famer Bernhard Langer won his ninth major title on PGA TOUR Champions, the most by any Tour player.
