Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Max Rose Split on Impeach-Trump Stumps https://thecity.nyc/2019/10/ocasio-cortez-and-rose-split-on-impeach-tru... Clifford Michel, Christine Chung Photo: Ben Fractenberg/THE CITY Sign up for “THE CITY Scoop,” our daily newsletter where we send you stories like this first thing in the morning. New York City’s two newest Democratic members of Congress are returning from Washington for town halls this week as calls for an impeachment inquiry mount — but their homecoming receptions are bound to differ. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who has long demanded President Donald Trump’s impeachment, will host a Thursday town hall in Queens to discuss her new legislative package addressing income inequality and poverty. Meanwhile, Rep. Max Rose, the city’s lone impeachment holdout, has a transit-themed town hall scheduled in Staten Island on Wednesday, where activists are saying they’ll ask about impeachment. “Nothing will distract me from fighting to improve the lives of my constituents,” Rose told THE CITY in a statement Monday. “The focus of the upcoming town halls will be on transit and our commuting nightmares — but I most certainly welcome any questions.” Ocasio-Cortez, whose spokesperson declined comment, has drawn attention to Democrats, such as Rose, who’ve refused to back the impeachment inquiry. The first-term reps’ diverging positions reflect the different stakes they face at the ballot box next year, political observers say. Rose’s 2018 win — a moderate Democrat taking back a district won by Trump — was emblematic of the so- called Blue Wave that regained the party the House of Representatives.

  • May 11, 2021 the Honorable Merrick Garland Attorney General U.S
May 11, 2021 The Honorable Merrick Garland Attorney General U.S. Department of Justice 950 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW Washington, DC 20530 Dear Attorney General Garland: We write respectfully to bring to your attention the decision by the Department of Justice, under the previous Administration, to assert the so-called “state secrets privilege” in litigation brought by victims of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. The 9/11 families—many of whom we have the honor of representing in Congress—have fought relentlessly for nearly twenty years to bring to justice all those associated with the worst terrorist attack on American soil. Your predecessor, on more than one occasion, asserted the “state secrets privilege” in litigation brought by the victims of the 9/11 attacks and their families against the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. We understand that the families in this litigation seek documents that they believe would show Saudi Arabia’s complicity in the attacks, as well as information related to Operation Encore, an investigation conducted by the FBI between 2007 and 2016. Like other victims, these families deserve to go to court with all the evidence available to them under a fair application of the law. As you know, one of our principal concerns with the “state secrets” doctrine is that it has no basis in statute; it is entirely judge-made, and it has frequently been asserted to cover up government misconduct. In many instances, courts have given the executive branch the unilateral power to dismiss a case or withhold information from litigants without needing to show any legitimate concern about the national security sensitivity of the information in question.

  • 2020 Election Recap
2020 Election Recap Below NACCHO summarizes election results and changes expected for 2021. Democrats will continue to lead the House of Representatives…but with a smaller majority. This means that many of the key committees for public health will continue to be chaired by the same members, with notable exceptions of the Appropriations Committee, where Chair Nita Lowey (D-NY) did not run for reelection; the Agriculture Committee, which has some jurisdiction around food safety and nutrition, whose Chair, Colin Peterson (D-MN) lost, as well as the Ranking Member for the Energy and Commerce Committee, Rep. Greg Walden, (R-OR) who did not run for reelection. After the 117th Congress convenes in January, internal leadership elections will determine who heads these and other committees. The following new Representatives and Senators are confirmed as of January 7. House of Representatives Note: All House of Representative seats were up for re-election. We list only those where a new member will be coming to Congress below. AL-1: Republican Jerry Carl beat Democrat James Averhart (open seat) Carl has served a member of the Mobile County Commission since 2012. He lists veterans’ health care and border security as policy priorities. Rep. Bradley Byrne (R-AL) vacated the seat to run for Senate. AL-2: Republican Barry Moore beat Democrat Phyllis Harvey-Hall (open seat) Moore served in the Alabama House of Representatives from 2010 to 2018. The seat was vacated by Rep. Martha Roby (R-AL) who retired. CA-8 Republican Jay Obernolte beat Democrat Christine Bubser (open seat) Jay Obsernolte served in the California State Assembly since 2014.

  • July 21, 2021 Dear Leaders of Democratic States
July 21, 2021 Dear Leaders of Democratic States: In the streets of Cuba, the people are bravely marching for a new day of freedom and demanding an end to the illegitimate, brutal Cuban dictatorship. After more than six decades of brutally oppressive rule, the Cuban people are risking their lives to loudly denounce the disastrous communist regime that has time and time again failed to promote and protect the general welfare of its citizens. The people are shouting “libertad,” and demanding freedom, democracy and human rights. As the Cuban people risk their lives for freedom, the world must stand with them in this critically important moment. As the democratically-elected leaders of the world’s free countries, we write to you today to fervently implore you to take action in support of the Cuban people and their democratic aspirations. It is time to finally end the evil and murderous reign of the communist, illegitimate Cuban regime that has murdered, tortured and oppressed for far too long. In concerted solidarity with the Cuban people, we believe there are four essential actions that we all must take immediately to promote freedom for the Cuban people and place further pressure on the corrupt and murderous Cuban regime to end its reign of terror. First, we urge you to emphatically denounce the illegitimate Cuban regime, hold it accountable for its human rights abuses and immediately end diplomatic relations. Freedom-loving nations must make clear our full and unwavering support for Cuba's pro-democracy movement, and for free and fair elections, with international supervision.

August 17, 2021 President Joe Biden Executive Office of the President 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW Washington, DC 20500 Dear President Biden, Yesterday, you announced to the American people that part of our remaining mission in Afghanistan is to evacuate our Afghan allies and other vulnerable Afghans to safety outside of Afghanistan, and that our troops are securing the airfield to ensure the continued operation of civilian and military flights for that purpose. We write with a critical request: that the United States must do everything possible to securely hold the airport in Kabul until the rescue mission is complete and our citizens, allies, and vulnerable Afghans have had an opportunity to leave. We trust that the previous August 31st deadline you imposed on our military mission will not apply to this effort, and that we will stay as long as is necessary to complete it. In furtherance of this mission, we will need to be clear with the Taliban that they must allow safe passage of Afghans needing evacuation to the airport, and that they will face grave consequences if they threaten our troops or impede our evacuation efforts. We also urge you to allow SIVs and vulnerable Afghans slated for evacuation to stage at the airport for as long as necessary until their turn comes to get on a plane, so that they are not forced to hide in Kabul and to brave Taliban checkpoints later. We recognize that this is an extremely difficult endeavor. But it would be unconscionable and devastating to our credibility to leave our allies behind, given the commitments we have made.

April 28, 2021 The Honorable Rosa DeLauro The Honorable Tom Cole Chair Ranking Member Labor, HHS, Education, Labor, HHS, Labor, HHS, Education, Labor, HHS, Education, Education, & Related Agencies Subcommittee & Related Agencies Subcommittee Committee on Appropriations Committee on Appropriations 2358-B Rayburn House Office Building 1036 Longworth House Office Building Washington, DC 20515 Washington, DC 20515 Dear Chairwoman DeLauro and Ranking Member Cole, While frustration is high over the seemingly endless COVID-19 stimulus spending, there is clear and bipartisan recognition that Head Start programs throughout the country have heroically stepped in to ensure basic needs for children living in poverty are met. Head Start staff have worked tirelessly and creatively to ensure early childhood learning has continued amid complex circumstances. This has ranged from home delivery of educational resources and summer school hours to facility modifications and double-sessions to achieve COVID-19 social distance protocols. As a result of this dedication, the vast majority of Head Start programs have been open for months deploying responsible COVID-19 operational modifications. In fact, in December 2020, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) cited Head Start as a model for implementation of in-person services because of its successful adherence to CDC guidance and ability to mitigate COVID-19 risk. We collectively commend this effort. We also know that these past fifteen months have been particularly difficult for children with limited resources and the impact of this pandemic will be far more emotional and psychological than physical for most young learners and families at the edge. That is why we strongly encourage the Subcommittee to ensure robust Quality Improvement Funding for science-backed trauma-informed care in the FY22 Labor, HHS, & Education Appropriations Bill.

1 Verizon Political Activity January – December 2016 A Message from Craig Silliman Verizon is affected by a wide variety of government policies -- from telecommunications regulation to taxation to health care and more -- that have an enormous impact on the business climate in which we operate. We owe it to our shareowners, employees and customers to advocate public policies that will enable us to compete fairly and freely in the marketplace. Political contributions are one way we support the democratic electoral process and participate in the policy dialogue. Our employees have established political action committees at the federal level and in 18 states. These political action committees (PACs) allow employees to pool their resources to support candidates for office who generally support the public policies our employees advocate. This report lists all PAC contributions, corporate political contributions, support for ballot initiatives and independent expenditures made by Verizon and its affiliates during 2016. The contribution process is overseen by the Corporate Governance and Policy Committee of our Board of Directors, which receives a comprehensive report and briefing on these activities at least annually. We intend to update this voluntary disclosure twice a year and publish it on our corporate website. We believe this transparency with respect to our political spending is in keeping with our commitment to good corporate governance and a further sign of our responsiveness to the interests of our shareowners.
