“Statesboro Blues”—Blind Willie McTell (1928) Added to the National Registry: 2015 Essay by Brian Bader Blind Willie McTell Blind Willie McTell was born May 5, 1901 in Thomson, Georgia. Though there is some uncertainty about his birth year, his comparatively long life (he died on Aug. 19, 1959, in Milledgeville, Georgia), his prolific recording career, the memories of numerous acquaintances, and McTell’s own recorded reminiscences, allow for a full picture of his life. His skillful fingerpicking guitar style ranks high with the playing of other acoustic blues artists, both blind (Blind Boy Fuller, Blind Blake, Reverend Gary Davis) and sighted (Josh White, Brownie McGhee). Hard to categorize, McTell embodied Piedmont blues, as well as ragtime, and gospel/spiritual/religious music, and may best be described as a mid-twentieth century American songster. One of his tunes--“covered,” or more accurately freely adapted, in a powerful electric blues rendition by the Allman Brothers Band-- is his legacy. This number most familiar to modern blues and rock fans: “Statesboro Blues.” Recorded by McTell and self-accompanied on twelve- string guitar in 1928 for Victor records, it showcases his distinctive voice and his talented guitar playing. The Allman Brothers later credited their cover of the song to “Will McTell” on their live two-record album “At Filmore East” released in 1971 on Capricorn Records. Guitarists Duane Allman (using a slide) and Dickey Betts cut loose with their trademark twin lead guitar line up in a memorable reading as a jumping blues shuffle. In an analysis of the history of “Statesboro Blues,” however, it is important to note that between the McTell recording and the Allman Brothers, there is a version from 1968 by Taj Mahal on his debut album.

Juli 2013 remastert auf CD und Vinyl By the time they released their fifth album Brothers And Sisters in August 1973, the Allman Brothers Band had experienced dizzying highs and soul-crushing lows. The group had spent its first two years developing its formidable collective chemistry into an unprecedented stylistic fusion that established it as the era’s most influential American rock act. But just as the band had achieved a hard-won commercial breakthrough with 1971’s At Fillmore East, it suffered a devastating loss with the death of Duane Allman, its founder, leader and musical visionary, in a motorcycle crash on October 29, 1971. Following Duane’s traumatic passing, the band regained its bearings and soldiered on, with Duane’s brother, singer/organist Gregg Allman, and guitarist/vocalist Dickey Betts—now the lone axeman in an act famous for its dual-guitar fireworks—assuming more prominent roles in its direction. The musicians marshaled their strengths to make Brothers and Sisters—their first album recorded completely without Duane—a decisive creative rebirth as well as their best-selling release to date. Brothers And Sisters bested the sales of At Fillmore East and Eat A Peach, spending five weeks at #1 and becoming the first Allman Brothers Band release to gain Platinum sales status. Configurations Vinyl - Brothers And Sisters original recording remastered. CD - Brothers And Sisters original recording remastered.

A RESOLUTION BY THE STATE TRANSPORTATION BOARD OF GEORGIA 2001 DUANE ALLMAN BOULEVARD AND RAYMOND BERRY OAKLEY III BRIDGE — DESIGNATED. WHEREAS, in 1969, a group of young but already seasoned and demonstrably and incredibly talented musicians, including guitarist Duane Allman, bassist Berry Oakley, vocalist and organist Gregg Allman, guitarist Dickey Betts, percussionist Butch Trucks, and percussionist Jaimoe, formed the Allman Brothers Band and established the band's home in Macon in April of that year; and WHEREAS, at now legendary jam sessions at their initial base on College Street, their later home at the "Big House" on Vineville Avenue, and other locations in and around Macon, including Rose Hill Cemetery and a farm known as Idlewild South, the band fused elements of blues, jazz, rock, and country music to create a musical genre now known and loved as "southern rock" and became one of the most exciting groups of performers ever to take the stage; and WHEREAS, the band members' talents and tour de force marathon performances across the nation not only received critical acclaim and awed their peers among musical greats but also served to inspire countless others and made Macon a musical mecca; and WHEREAS, Duane Allman's all too brief life was tragically ended at age 24 by a motorcycle accident on a street in Macon on October 29, 1971, and Berry Oakley suffered a similar fate at the same age and at almost the same location a year later on November 11, 1972; WHEREAS although their presence is sadly missed, these musicians' incomparable

RANDALL BRAMBLETT TO RELEASE PINE NEEDLE FIRE NOVEMBER 13th, 2020 VIA NEW WEST RECORDS AMERICAN SONGWRITER PREMIERES “I’VE GOT FAITH IN YOU” FEATURING DUANE ALLMAN’S 1961/1962 GIBSON SG FROM THE ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND’S LEGENDARY AT FILLMORE EAST Randall Bramblett will release Pine Needle Fire on November 13th, 2020 via New West Records. The 12-song set was produced by Bramblett and Gerry Hansen and is the follow up to his acclaimed 2017 album Juke Joint At The Edge Of The World. In addition to his solo work over the course of his illustrious 40-plus-year career, Bramblett has recorded, performed and composed alongside rock luminaries like Gregg Allman, Bonnie Raitt, Steve Winwood, The Band’s Levon Helm, Widespread Panic, Marc Cohn, and more. With Pine Needle Fire, he recognizes a thread throughout its songs. Bramblett says it is “about time passing, or at least grappling with the realization that you don’t have an infinite amount of time left like you think you do when you’re young. So there’s the mortality part of it. And then another part has to do with our current situation in this country. I grew up protesting in the ‘60s and ‘70s, so I’ve always felt connected to politics. Now I’m really hung up on it. And you look around and there’s a lot of people that are kind of desperate for change and for justice...or maybe they’re just desperate. They’re trying to hang on in this world. I’m one of them.

  • Let It Rock: the Mount Olympus of American Rock Bands, 1965-1995
Let it Rock: the Mount Olympus of American rock bands, 1965-1995 Course description: This is an eight-week course that will take a deep dive into the music and story of six of the greatest American rock and roll bands, groups that defined the genre. The rich history of rock and roll is full of brilliant songs and singers, but the essence of rock and roll has always been the rock and roll band—that small--usually four to seven piece—ensemble made up of young musicians who caught lightning in a bottle together, taking their blues, R&B, rockabilly, early rock, country, folk and even jazz influences and combining them to create music that is timeless and inspiring. A band is like a family; there is friendship, rivalries, tragedy, triumph and intense love. This course will take a close look at six of the most iconic, artistic, and successful of those bands. In the first three weeks we will cover a trio of the most impactful American groups in rock and roll history. The fourth week we examine a band that was 4/5 Canadian, but made their musical mark in the US. Weeks five and six we cover a band that was originally British, but became a household word when they came to America, and we will devote the final two weeks to a beloved, late, legendary American rocker. Each session will include: • A thorough, fast-moving background lecture about each band, including; quotes, excerpts from books, and photographs of the bands and key people around them presented in a slide show format with accompanying biographical commentary.
