Dear Friends,

It has been an exciting year at Southern Arkansas University. Throughout 2009, we have celebrated the University’s centennial with events that have paid tribute to the past 100 years and those who have come before us. We have also used this special year to reconnect with many alumni and friends so that they may become even more involved in the success of the University’s second century.

Much of the success we have seen during our first 100 years as an institution would not have been possible without the work of the Southern Arkansas University Foundation. This trend has continued during the centennial year. Gifts made through the SAU Foundation continue to bring major capital projects to the campus. In 2009, they have assisted in the construction of the University Science Center and will soon bring a major expansion to the Mulerider Baseball Stadium. These gifts also brought former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert to our campus in October.

Thank you for your support of the Southern Arkansas University Foundation. Because of your generosity, I believe our second century of service will greatly exceed the first.

Message from the SAU Foundation Board Chairman

Betty (’62) and I (’59) are proud alumni of SAU. We strongly feel that our education and life experiences at SAU prepared us for, contributed to, and greatly enhanced our business, professional and personal lives. We strongly believe that, having been blessed in so many ways in our 56 years of marriage and our lives generally, we should give back to our church, family, alma mater, community, state and na- tion.

We are pleased and honored to be members of the Golden Circle Honor Society and the Legacy So- ciety of the SAU Foundation. We trust that our gifts and support to SAU will enable present and future deserving students to obtain the quality education available at SAU, an education that will help them succeed in their lives.

It has been my privilege to serve as an SAU Foundation Governor for the past five years. I am particu- larly honored to serve as Chairman of the Board this year, the 100th anniversary of this great institution of higher learning. Just having attained the status of a Golden Rider, I have been involved with SAU in several roles for one-half of these 100 years. We have thus far celebrated this centennial with outstanding events and more are to come. How blessed we are with a great administration and staff, led by Dr. David Rankin, learned, caring and dedicated faculty, a loyal and generous alumni, and friends, both individuals and corporations.

I challenge each SAU alumnus to conclude our 100th anniversary with a gift of $100 (or more or less depending on your situa- tion and inclination). Our check is in the mail!

SAU has given me an opportunity to get an education first and foremost, but also to develop a strong bond with the teachers and lifelong relationships with my classmates. The scholarships I received to come to SAU have allowed me more time to focus on my studies because I don’t have to work as many hours and I don’t have to worry with loans and how I will pay them off. Being in the Ag department is like having another family. The professors really do care about your success in the classroom and your ability to apply your knowledge in the real world.

Ray Burns met the first recipient of his endowment, Christy Wust, a sophomore working on her associates in nursing earlier while visiting the SAU campus. “It was wonderful to meet her,” Burns said. “She is excited and I think she has a great attitude and I think she has a She is excited and I think she bright future ahead of her in nursing.
