SAYS

Gary W. Grape / February 2018 The pounding of rain outside my office window tells me that winter is here for awhile and that spring is still a ways off. That is one of the rea- sons the SSBA Board of Directors decided to have a Winter Blues Music Festival in February. We needed a day of live music and blues to brighten up our day, especially since the IBC is over, and our next festival, The Gray Sky Blues Music Festival, is not until April 7th. The Winter Blues Music Festival will be held at The Swiss on Saturday, February 10th. Please see our poster for the lineup with performance times. While going through our membership database I noticed that there are still many members who have let their membership lapse. If you are one of those members I would encourage you to re-new, and there are several ways you can do it. Go to our website, www.southsoundblues.com and use PayPal, download an application off our site and mail in a check, or when you come to the Winter Blues Music Festival on February 10th we’ll have applications available. See you at the Winter Blues Festival! “Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you’ll land among the stars.” (Unknown Source)

Little Bill Engelheart

So anyway; Jan and I had been married five years. We had two small children, we are living in a small house in Tacoma, I'm playing maybe two or three jobs a month and spending most of my time sitting on the couch writing REAL depressing poetry. Poetry that I insist on reading to an obviously very patient young bride. Then out of the blue she tells me I should make the trip to LA and give it another shot. WOW she is encouraging me to follow my dream and GO FOR IT! She believes in me. As I was soon to find out, she just wanted me out of the house, out of the chair and out the state. My friend Jim and I boarded the Grey Hound the next day. Our baggage included a Saxophone, a Bass and amp, clothes and a briefcase full of weed. Having been to California several times I couldn't help from being concerned about the agents that would be coming on the bus at the border. Being the only ones on board that were doing all we could to pro- mote the hippy style of life, long hair, nayru shirts and a briefcase full of weed, Jim and I would be just what they were hoping for. As it turned out they completely ignored us and the band played on. Feeling the need to celebrate my traveling buddy took the brief case into the restroom and lit up. Thank you very much JIMBO. After being on the bus for over twenty hours we arrived in LA and transferred to the ride for Santa Ana where our friend Larry lived, as it turned out, in an alley with his wife and young child. Not a good start! About an hour later we were off to a community hall to meet our drummer. His name was Ronald Dias. Real nice guy but no matter what I counted off, Ron would play a slow blues tempo. Again NOT A GOOD START. At this point I had been awake for about twenty four hours and having second thoughts as to my GO FOR IT plan. What happened next pretty much put a cap on it. Larry tells us that we will be staying in the alley next door at Wandas' apartment. Seems Wanda only has one bed so Jim and I will be sleeping on the couch or in a sleeping bag on the floor. I ask if I can use the phone. Sorry no phone but there is a pay phone on the corner. I call Jan and tell her I have made a GI- ANT mistake and need money to get back home. A long silence.....She very calmly says "You haven't made a mistake, You just got there. You need to get some sleep. Everything will look better tomorrow". In other words. "DON'T COME HOME!" Next stop, go get the briefcase from Jim.
