Grape / February 2018 The pounding of rain outside my office window tells me that winter is here for awhile and that spring is still a ways off. That is one of the rea- sons the SSBA Board of Directors decided to have a Winter Blues Music Festival in February. We needed a day of live music and blues to brighten up our day, especially since the IBC is over, and our next festival, The Gray Sky Blues Music Festival, is not until April 7th. The Winter Blues Music Festival will be held at The Swiss on Saturday, February 10th. Please see our poster for the lineup with performance times. While going through our membership database I noticed that there are still many members who have let their membership lapse. If you are one of those members I would encourage you to re-new, and there are several ways you can do it. Go to our website, www.southsoundblues.com and use PayPal, download an application off our site and mail in a check, or when you come to the Winter Blues Music Festival on February 10th we’ll have applications available. FOREFATHERS Howlin’ W olf JUNE 10,1910 - JANUARY 10,1976 BY PETER GURALNICK OWLIN’ WOLF WAS LARGER than life in every respect. As an entertainer, as an individual, and as a bluesman, he was outsized, unpredictable, and always his own man. He was a great blues singer who pos sessed that quality of egocentric self-absorption that is the mark of the true showman. To many people this may seem contradictory, but Wolf proved that to its natural audience blues is not all pain and suffering, but is instead a kind of re his voice that was his crowning glory, a voice which could lease. • The Claudettes Brandish a Piano Instead
The White Stripes and Black Keys rock the blues with a guitar attack. Like the Bad Plus, the Claudettes brandish a piano instead. But the Claudettes have created their own fanatical fusion of blues and soul-jazz—like Ray Charles on a punk kick. Recently—on tour and on their new album NO HOTEL—the Claudettes added 24- year-old Nigerian-American singer-dancer Yana. Bringing her flair for '60s pop-soul and French Ye-Ye songs to the band, she has lifted their live shows and studio recordings to exciting new heights. Johnny Iguana and Michael Caskey didn't know what they were getting themselves into when they called a place called Claudette's Bar in 2010 looking for a gig in between Chicago and St. Louis. Not only did Claudette book them into her bar in Oglesby, IL (about an hour and a half southwest of Chicago's South Side), but she made them her house band and put them on salary. The duo—named "The Claudettes" by Claudette—kept the bar packed with their epic sets of spasmodic instrumentals. What Johnny and Michael didn't see coming was Claudette losing her bar in 2011—and still paying them weekly to be her house band at other bars, as well as chain stores (which she thinks of as high-level showcases). In addition to touring and recording six albums with his cult-favorite rock band oh my god, pianist Johnny Iguana has played live or recorded with Junior Wells, Buddy Guy, Otis Rush, Koko Taylor, James Cotton, Lil’ Ed, Carey Bell, Billy Boy Arnold, Lurrie Bell, John Primer, Billy Branch, Carlos Johnson, Sugar Blue, Dave Myers, Eddie Shaw and more.

  • Delmark Label Discography
Discography Of The Delmar(k) Label Delmar Records was started in St. Louis Missouri in 1953 by Robert Koester. The company recorded blues and jazz. Pearl Records was a subsidiary. Robert Koester was born in 1932 and grew up in Wichita, Kansas during the era of the Big Bands. He loved to listen to Fats Waller, Barney Bigard, Coleman Hawkins and others on the radio and as a teenager went to live performances whenever he could. He began collecting records in high school but in order to find what interested him, he had to search in second hand stores and in obsolete stock from juke box operators because the music was out of print. Koester was collecting both jazz and blues. Out of high school he enrolled in cinematography at St. Louis University because he had ambitions to be a film maker. He began selling records out of his dormitory room and joined a jazz club in St. Louis. At the jazz club he met Ron Fister who was also a record collector and they formed K & F Sales which evolved into a record store named Blue Note Record Shop. After a year in business, Fister and Koester agreed to split up the inventory and Koester opened a record store on Delmar Street. In 1953, Koester started the Delmar record label at the age of 21, named after the street. Because he was threatened with a lawsuit, Koester had to change the name of the label to Delmark in the early 60’s. The first artists on Delmar were the Windy City Six a vintage jazz group that was based in St.

  • Billy Branch & the Sons of Blues
BILLY BRANCH 3 TIME GRAMMY NOMINEE RETIRED 2 TERM GRAMMY GOVERNOR Billy Branch was discovered by Willie Dixon, the "father of modern Chicago Blues," while Billy was still in college. Willie encouraged Billy to finish his college education, which he did, but instead of going to law school after receiving his political science degree, Billy began touring with the Willie Dixon Chicago All- Stars. This gave Billy the unique opportunity to travel and work as an under study for the legendary Carey Bell who was planning to leave the All-Stars and form his own band. When Carey took his leave, the young Billy Branch took his place, touring with Willie Dixon for 6 years. Since those early days, Billy has played on over 150 different recordings, including 12 under his own name. He's recorded with Willie Dixon, Johnny Winter, Lou Rawls, Koko Taylor, Eddy Clearwater, Honeyboy Edwards, Syl Johnson, Lurrie Bell, Ronnie Baker Brooks, John Primer, and Taj Mahal, just to name a few. In addition, he has received three Grammy nominations (losing one nomination to BB King and Eric Clapton). He served two consecutive terms on the Grammy Board of Governors, and founded the Grammy Blues Committee. In addition, he has won multiple W.C. Handy Awards from the Blues Foundation, an Emmy Award, an Addy Award (this is like an Oscar for TV ads), two Chicago Music Awards, and numerous humanitarian achievement awards. Billy Branch has become the ambassador of the Chicago Blues. During his 6 week tour of Turkey, he represented the USA in Turkey’s Parliament, teaching political party leaders to play harmonica! Thousands of fans showed up every night of the week to experience the authentic Chicago Blues! He and his band, the Sons of Blues have delivered this cultural legacy around the world, having made over 70 international tours.
