Steven Lethbridge 5.0 0 17.0 0 0/17 0 3.40 - - 0.00 2016 was a season the third team would prefer to forget in terms of results. Skipper Alan Harwood de- served a medal for the hours spent cajoling and persuading numerous youngsters to turn out for the team on a Sunday. Often leading the side as the only player the age of 21, Alan often had to turn to the selectors to give him a couple of experienced second team batsmen. Barker and Baldwin lent a hand on several occasions but as the number of players eligible after playing second team cricket was limited this sometimes could affect younger players chances defeating the object of the third team. There was a great improvement in the bowling ability of the side with the younger bowlers growing into their tasks in a tough league. It was the batting side of the game where we fell down. Sam Cull returned to the club where he had played as a junior before leaving the game for a few years. He worked hard at re- gaining his muscle memory for batting and Groundsman Peter Bentley was called into the fray for home games. His experience will be an asset in 2017 after he has had some winter nets. The addition of three newcomers in Brothers, Ben Cardwell and Adam I 'Anson and Toby Lush all under 17 years of age gave Harwood hope for the future and indeed his own son, Matty Harwood showed promise at the top of the order with the bat. Other talented young players were too often un available to offer any consistency in the team. Should the club manage to get its full compliment of young county players play- ing together on a Sunday next season the future need not look so gloomy. Organised turn out at Tuesday night net sessions over the season is an answer to third team problems. The batting is only going to come up to standard if the club accept that these sessions need to be struc- tured to develop our younger players and develop their skill sets. Sunday division two will be an easier playing surface for the shell shocked youngsters to regain confidence in their games. We have a number of juniors who are knocking on the door of third team cricket, who are keen to learn and listen. They are beginning to believe that they can do a job in senior cricket and players like James Bendle, Tom Park Bradley, Oli Clark and Maddy Atkinson to name but four should be being asked to play parts in the side on merit in 2017. The older juniors must also take it upon themselves to step up to the mark and begin making telling contributions in games. The key word are “winter nets”. Prepare to take responsibility for your team...BE THE KEY PLAYER IN 2017 Thanks go to Alan Harwood for his years service as captain of the third team. He has announced his retire- ment as skipper but he will continue to play some part in cricket. His efforts have been phenomenal. A hard act to follow . TD
