They were quick to seize ICTs in the past (printing presses, television, fax machines), which was a major factor in their successes. Mass email campaigns, blogs, their audio- and video- variants (the podcasts and the videocasts), social networks like Facebook and MySpace, and other tools, such as Twitter, are increasingly popular among the movements and their activists. The extremely rapid diffusion of new technologies has raised a lot of questions about their impact on many areas of life from macroeconomic consequences to interpersonal relations, including much comment on their impact on social movements. Social historians are even rethinking the whole history of media. However, up to this point, we have no broad view of how social movement organizations are making use of the media. What types of movements are making use of new media? In what way are they using them and for what purposes? Are they more common in younger organizations, or in organizations that operate on larger geographic scales? Does their use lead to a sense of democratic empowerment? iv To answer these questions, this study analyzes an internet-based survey of four populations of social movement organizations ranging from the local to the international in geographic scope (four specific populations analyzed are: Pittsburgh (USA), Poland, the international movements, and the movements with high visibility online). This dissertation explores the use (and the non-use) of ICTs in the first broad survey on their use by modern social movements. It provides a broad overview of the movement's demographics (location, range, goal) and their membership (size, activity). It details the diffusion and use of over twenty ICTs, analyzing the success stories of email, static websites, phones and social networking, as well as the relatively poor performance of blogs, podcasts and faxes.     Athens Journal of Mass Media and Communications- Volume 7, Issue 2, April 2021 – Pages 107-120 News Podcast Usage in Promoting Political Participation in Korea1 By Changho Lee* Based on an online survey of 734 news podcast users in Korea, this study analyzed how motivations for podcast use and news podcast variables affected offline and online political participation. The results showed that any motivation did not have a significant effect on offline and online participation. Rather, discussions about issues transmitted through news podcasts were a positive predictor of online participation as well as offline participation. The discussion was also a mediator in the relationship between the time spent on a news podcast and offline/online political participation. That is, news podcast use enhanced political discussions, which promoted participation offline and online. Overall, these results indicate that discussions are important in the mobilization of political participation in the era of podcast.1 Keywords: podcast, news podcast, political discussion, online participation, offline participation Introduction Podcasts are audio files that can be downloaded or streamed from a smartphone at no cost (Perks and Turner, 2019). Podcasting came of age in 2005 and its emergence was solidified in 2015 when Apple upgraded to iTunes 4.9 (Bottomley, 2015). It is becoming popular with the development of audio technology and the spread of smartphone. Easy access to downloads and developments in technology have facilitated prominent a position of podcasts in the digital cultural industries (Vrikki and Malik, 2019). Over the years, its regime has been described as authoritarian by political observers (Rodan 2004; Tan 2012), the subjugation of the media a commonly brought-up example of the party’s ability to shut down contrasting political views (Seow,1998). With media laws that dictate the freedom of the press and protect the PAP’s interests, opposition parties have found it difficult to break their stronghold on the nation-state, and there has been no real political contestation in the general elections. Since 2011 however, the PAP, amidst social pressure to ‘keep up with the times’, have cautiously lifted the total ban on online campaigning and as a result, Singapore politics have undergone rapid mediatization. This has led to two major changes in the local political arena. Firstly, the shift in symbiotic relationships between the mainstream media, political organizations and the electorate in Singapore, has encouraged the paralleled rise of "newly competitive" opposition parties able to capitalize on newer, non-traditional spaces of communication to question the ruling legitimacy of the PAP (Ortmann, 2010). In order to brand themselves as alternative voices to an elite PAP, their public performances have appealed to growing populism, and tap on Singlish, an ideologically valuable linguistic resource, to do so.
