He predicts disaster for his people and brings his assistant to inform the elders of the community. After the Holy Roman Emperor signs a decree threatening to ex- pel the Jews, Loew begins to look for ways to de- fend his people. He uses magic to bring the Golem—a clay figure—to life, but things quickly start to go terribly wrong. The Golem was directed by Paul Wegener, who also plays the film’s title character. The film crit- ic Leonard Maltin gave The Golem three-and-a-half out of four stars, calling it a “chilling, visually daz- zling story of the , based on a famous Jewish folktale of the 16th century.”
